Inspiration for this project came from a general interest in vintage cabinet photographs, cryptids, and natural history. From those three things, it was easy to find an era, an occupation, and a story that would take a character far and wide ina search for something. ae luences: ; Hook rr, The book, and much of this project, takes inspiration from anatomical drawings and books such as Dragonology- a book written by a fictional author, detailing his knowledge of dragons and where they can be found. nf luences: nimations The animations are inspired by old Pathé Newsreels and the kinetoscope shorts from the game Bioshock Infinite. For the creatures themselves I wanted to be able to create models that could be enhanced with painted textures, for this I looked at games like The Wolf Among Us and Life is Strange, as the models in these games rely on painted details over 3D ones. Adelaide is a British cryptozoologist of Jamaican descent. She was raised in London and follows in the ree footsteps of her parents, who were renowned cryptozoologists before their retirement. Kamal Manish Singh is an Indian eryptozoologist who has \ lived with and studied under Adelaide's parents for three i years. He and Adelaide became firm friends and planned lel the expedition together. pete Grete Sauer is from Germany, and runs a pest control company with her twin brother that specialises in dealing with lesser known and often dangerous creatures, Grete is a weapons expert, () Friedrich Sauer is from {| Germany, and runs a | pest control company | with his twin sister that specialises in dealing with lesser known and often dangerous creatures. Black Shuck is a ghostly black dog reported to reside within the coastline and countryside of East Anglia. (One of the most famous cryptids, the Loch Ness Monster is a prehistoric looking aquatic creature that many believe inhabits Loch Ness in Scotland. Timagined the fairies as spirits who had taken human-like forms in order to communicate with (or manipulate} humans. Their flesh would be made from, fungus and mushrooms and their bones made of twigs. This would make them appropriately delicate and small but still magical and otherworldly. After time, the fungus and| twigs would. grow out of control, turning to the fairies into the corrupt pisties and goblins. Gargoyles are grotesque stone carvings said to ward offevil spirits. In my story, they are living stone creatures that spend their time chasing malevolent spirits away from Notre Dame. The leshy is a forest deity from Slavic mythology, said to protect forests, They are also regarded as a god of hunting, and are depicted surrounded by bears or wolves. The manticore is a mythological creature from Persia, said to have the face of a man, the body of a lion, and the tail of a scorpion. It is also sometimes portrayed with wings. ‘The yall is a creature with the head of an elephant and body of a lion, though is sometimes portrayed with horse and bird features. It is said they protect Hindu temples, and are often found in stone sculptures around these temples. “Tikbalang to have the body ofa rabbit but the horns of fan antelope (though is Jackalope Tetras Jersey “evil usually portrayed with deer antlers). A rather famous coryptid, the Jersey Devil is reported to have the wings of a bat, head of a goat, Iegs of a kangaroo and a forked tail. The rolling calf in Jamaican folklore is a large, homed ‘cow wrapped in chains that rolls onto roads and charges at people it encounters. “Flver Mumma river mumma is similar to a mermaid or siren. They protect lakes and rivers, though are known to tempt victims to the waters edge with golden combs, before dragging them into the depths. ‘The bukavak: is a creature in Slavic mythology, believed to live in/near rivers and lakes, emerging at night, making a frightening noise, to then strangle people and uiealede death. [looked at vampire fish and komodo dragons for inspiration, eventually combining the head structure of these two creatures to create the bukavac’s head. At first I wanted to give the wendigo a jagged set of broken, sharp tecth, but moved towards a more drastic version of the mouth, where the entire jaw extends from the mouth, the teeth becoming larger to aid the wendigo in eating. ‘The wendigo is cannibal monster (once human) that haunts the Atlantic coast of the USA. I chose the wendigo as a subject for animating mostly because I was interested in how it would move. *Wendigo PStoryboard ‘The man-eating tree is a Madagascan plant said to eat people and animals. awhole tree, Adelaide collects a seedling growing nearby it. “Dpthographs “Neen 7 ta ES wana = | TUB eT ® rr E yn 7 Ca i - : ‘ p> | Tyrope main Aiea Current, “Journal “Eatries ‘th March 1899 Bver since Iwas a little girl, I dreamed of exploring the world for the creatures my parents described in stories. When they were away, I would sit in the library and admire the various specimens and bones they had collected over: the years; the three-headed sheep in a jar, scales from a ‘mermaid’s corpse, the skull of an Australian bunyip. 1 recall the day they returned with Blaise, a phoenix they had found during a trip to Eeypt, and decided that would be their last trip. I felt an immense sorrow, as all my life I had hoped my first expedition would be with my mother and father. Around two years later, Kamal Manish Singh, a cryptozoologist from India, came to live with us and study under my father alongside me. Mr Singh has since become a close friend, and regularly helps me to look after my breeding pair of Wolpertingers (large rabbit-like creatures I was sent by the Sauer twins from Germany). It seemed only right, three months ago, after a few glasses of sloe gin [lemonade for Kamal), that we should plan our own, expedition. "We have so many contacts the world over", I recall Mr Singh saying, “there's so much we could learn’. Within two months, we'd made all the necessary plans to start our trip, and even recruited the Sauer twins, who would help protect us from harm, as well as trap certain specimens for further study. It is my last night at home, for tomorrow we take a coach to London to track down a curious creature known as ‘Spring-Heeled Jack, who had once terrorised the city many years back, Weill be staying at The Queen's Arms in Kensington for three nights, before taking another coach to Suffolk on the 11th, to investigate the infamous Black Shuck. Mr Singh has already retired to his room, though I find myself far too excited to even think of sleep! Tam unsure how successful my journey will be, though as I write this T ‘am feeling overwhelmingly positive. ‘th March 1899 We arrived at the Queen's Anns around cleven o'clock, and have somchow managed to fit all of our equipment and Juggage in the two rooms we've bought for the next few nights. Lam sharing with Grete Sauer, whilst Mr Singh shares with Friedrich in a room down the corridor. The Sauer twins aren't quite as I imagined them. Grete is a tall, muscular woman who looks as though ten men couldn't move her, and her brother is no different. Grete seems to bbe in charge of most of the weaponry while her brother specialises in building traps. Upon arrival they asked how my Wolpertingers have been, and were happy to hear the two had settled quite well into the enclosure Thad built for ‘them. We plan to rest for most of the day, enjoy an early dinner ‘at around four o'clock, before venturing out to Peckham where we will be tracking Spring-Hecled Jack. It has been many years since Jack was terrorised London, though reports have arisen again, and the mayor, Sir Alfred ‘Newton, wrote to us some weeks ago asking us to look into Jack's possible return. How incredible that he should ‘begin to appear again at such a time! Grete has prepared ‘two pistols for herself and Friedrich, she has assured me ‘they are only taking them as a last resort, though insists she will teach me to use one at some point on our journey. Itis nearing midnight as I write this, as we have just retuned to the Queen's Arms. After speaking with locals, wwe believe Jack may not in fact be in Peckham, but rather just visiting there on occasion. We instead believe Jack is residing in Rotherhithe, around three miles away. There is a number of abandoned houses near the docks there that Jack could no doubt hide in, and all recent reports of him state he was heading in that direction. What I find fascinating is that his more recent sightings have been, non-hostile, and all the people who claim to have spotted him say he fled almost immediately. Perhaps Jack’s days of terror have long been over, and the creature has simply retumed to his old home after time away. The question then arises: who or what in Peckham was so significant to such a beast? 9 March 1899 Pies sore breskfast, we immediately went to Rother oo chencisocd heeen aner the doce al i farsa residence, one particiar bul caught our attention, Part @kne staircase had given way some time ago, meaning anyone wishing to venture ea bare ye a adder to reach the sper ae ince heh We could ter Fi lings the wal Wd on what remained of the seal Bs roted that there were acretch merle ee ene coltapocd vinire, suggesting they Ha something hed attempted to use them oa he 00d snapped under the woight, Buk ial Fe geet heats, oot coome ord to me eaters ot all While Ten nox chally conmncea se hich Jock resides, ies marth oka Se We eel roouin thin cyt, with a oder
