How to Catch

a Fairy
Minor Submission
11/01/2018
Animated Short
Concept
Set in the era of the 1930’s, a Catcher
plans on finding and capturing a Fairy
known to be within the woods. This
however is far easier said than done,
as with each attempt the Catcher
makes, he meets his demise thanks to
the wit of the mischievous and elusive
Fairy.
Style
Influences
The style of the animation is
influenced greatly by the early
animated cartoons of the 1930’s,
much of the influence is taken from
Fleischer Studios’ Betty Boop and
Bimbo, as well and early Disney
Mickey Mouse and other Rubber Hose
animations.

The Fairy
Influences
The influences for that of the Fairy character is
inspired by early 30’s cartoon characters such as
Betty Boop and many devils that appeared in Fleischer
Studio animations. To avoid making the Fairy appear to
be a typical innocent image of a fairy, many influences
came from a more folklore based description of fairies,
such as imps, gnomes and pixies which look and act
more animalistic, mischievous and vicious than
modern depictions of fairies.

The Catcher
Influences
The design for that of the Catcher is heavily
influenced by 1930’s cartoon characters,
these being many of the villains shown
throughout Betty Boop and Bimbo, such as
Hezza Rat and the Ghosts from ‘Swing You
Sinners’.
The Catcher
Developments
I had a very clear image of how I wanted The
Catcher to be designed, with a crescent
moon-like face and very tall with long limbs.
Much of the Catchers developments involved
experimenting with the face’s characteristics,
such as beard, moustache, pointed nose etc.
