COMPUTER INTEGRATED MANUFACTURING

UNIT- III CELLULAR MANUFACTURING

Two Marks Questions

1. What is GT?
Group Technology is a manufacturing philosophy in which similar parts are
identified and grouped together to take advantage of their similarities in
manufacturing and design.
2. What is the role of GT in CAD/CAM?
GT provides a means to structure and save information about parts, such as
design and manufacturing attributes, process, and manufacturing
capabilities, that is needed for computerization and analysis.
3. What is part family?
A part family is a collection of parts which are similar either because of
geometry and size or because of similar processing steps are required in
their manufacture.
4. List out the methods for part family formation.
a. Visual inspection
b. Production flow analysis
c. Parts classification and coding system.
5. What is PFA in part families?
The PFA is a technique for forming part families and machine groups / cells
by analysing the operation sequence and the routing of a part through the
machines and workstations in the plant.

6. Write down the types of coding system structure

a. Hierarchical structure

b. Chain type structure
c. Hybrid structure
7. What is hierarchical structure in coding system?
In this code structure, the interpretation of each succeeding symbol depends
on the value of the preceding symbols.
8. What is chain type structure in coding system?
In this code, the interpretation of each symbol in the sequence is fixed. It
does not depend on the value of the proceeding symbol.
9. What is hybrid structure in coding system?
It is the combination of hierarchical and chain type structure. It takes the
advantage of both hierarchical and chain type structure coding system.
10. How the machines are arranged into cells?
a. By line type layout
b. By function type layout
c. By group layout
11. Define Cellular Manufacturing?
The term cellular manufacturing is defined as grouping of the machines for
one or more parts families be arranged to perform all the operations required
for the family or families of parts.
12. How the machine cells are classified?
a. Single machine cell
b. Group machine cell with manual handling
c. Group machine cell with semi-integrated handling
d. Flexible Manufacturing System

13. List out the factors influencing in determining the arrangement of

equipment in the cell.
a. Volume of work to be done by the cell

b. Variations in process routing of the parts
c. Part size, shape, weight and other physical attributes.
14. Define CAPP
The CAPP represents the link between design and manufacturing in a CAD
/ CAM system. The CAPP is concerned with determining the operation
sequence, machines, tools, materials, tolerances, notes, cutting parameters,
process (such as how to heat treat) jigs, fixtures, method, gauges and
graphical representation of the part in various stages of completion.
15. Define Process Planning.
The process planning involves the preparation and documentation of the
plans for manufacturing the products.
16. List out the approaches of process planning.
The approaches of process planning are,
a. Manual approach
b. Computer assisted variant approach
c. Computerized generative approach
17. Name few of the CAPP system
• Variant CAPP system
• CUTPLAN
• CAPP
• DCLASS
• AYCAPP
• Generative CAPP system
• CMPP
• APPAS
• CADAM
• TIPPS
18. Write few of the CAPP programming languages.

19. List out the benefits of CAPP
The benefits of CAPP are,
a. Process rationalization and standardization
b. Increased productivity of process planners
c. Reduced lead time for process planning
d. Improved legibility
e. Incorporation of other application programs
20. List out the process planning functions of CMPP.
The process planning functions of CMPP are,
a. Generation of sequence of operations
b. Determination of reference surface
c. Calculation of dimensions and tolerances
d. Production of process plan documents
