ATTACHMENT TO THE STANDARS OF IMMEDIATE ATTENTION TO THE NEWBORN IN THE

LABOR AND DELIVERY UNIT OF THE HOSPITAL ESCUELA UNIVERSITARIO, BLOQUE MATERNO
INFANTIL, SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER 2016

Abstract

The Standards of immediate care to the newborn, constitute one of the fundamental bases for
the care of the newborn in the first moments of extra uterine life. Aim: Determine the level of
attachment that health care providers have to these rules in the Labor and Delivery Unit of the
Hospital Escuela Universitario. knowing the level of attachment, makes us realize the type of
care that is being provided to both the newborn and the mother and to fix what is being done
incorrectly to improve the quality of life of the newborn and his mother. Method: This is a non-
experimental study, with exploratory and descriptive features. Developed through the first two
weeks of October 2016, with a sample of 94 births. the collection of data was developed
through the observation, using a questionnaire with 31 questions, of which 30 were closed and
1 semi-open, in seven shifts of sixteen hours each one. The cases included were: healthy
newborns infants in the Delivery Unit, excluding the opposite cases to the description
above. Results: We observed that 74.5% of the personnel responsible for attending the births
had no knowledge of the patient’s medical record. 75% of them meets the biosafety
parameters. Only 4.3% of the newborn infants underwent clamping and cutting of the umbilical
cord according to the rules and the 69.1% was placed on skin-to-skin contact with his mother,
promoting early mother-child attachment. In 98.7% of cases ophthalmic prophylaxis was done
according to the standards and in 100% of the cases the vitamin k prophylaxis was applied
according to the rules. Conclusion: of the total number of standards assessed in research, only
the correct valuation of the vitality of the newborn, taking anthropometric measures and
prophylaxis with vitamin K are fulfilled in its entirety, and the only assessed standard that has a
0% performance is the application of the correct medication according to the standard for the
ophthalmic prophylaxis.
