Sura Mumtahana (or The Women to be

Examined)

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

O Believers do not take My and your enemies as your friends. You

cannot be on terms of secret intimacy with the enemies of your Faith and
people. These are persecuting your Faith and seeking to destroy it and you.
Your intimacy may not be even for the sake of your relatives as it
compromises the life and the existence of your whole community. God is very
much aware what you conceal or what you reveal. Your relatives will not be of
any use to you on the Day of Judgement. There is for you an excellent
exemple to follow in Prophet Abrahim an his companions. The forthwith
rejected the enemies of God. Abraham told to his father that he will beg for
him forgiveness from God although he had no influence on the Will of God.
As such Abraham also prayed to God as, O God in You we put our trust, to
You we return in repentance and to You is our Final Goal. Our Lord, make us
not a test and trial for the Unbelievers but forgive us, for You are the Exalted
in Might, the Wise. In Abraham and his companions, there is an excellent
example for you to follow. For those whose hope is in God and believe in the
Final Day. But if anyone has no belief, God is Free of all Wants. He is Worthy
of all Praise. It could be that God may put love and friendship between you
and the persons who are your enemies at present. God has power over all
things. He is oft forgiving, Most Merciful. God does not forbid you from
dealing kindly and justly with those persons who do not fight with you nor
they have driven you out from your homes. For God loves those who are just.
O you Believers, when there come to you Believing refugee women, test them.
If they are genuine refugees and you are sure they have left their houses in the
cause of their Faith (in Islam), do not send them back to the Unbelievers. They
are not lawful (wives) of the Unbelievers (any more), nor are the Unbelievers
lawful husbands for them. Pay the Unbelievers men what they have spent on
their dower. You are also permitted to marry them paying the usual dowry to
them. If the refugee women are found to be unbelievers and are just fugitives,
return them to their guardians Demand from their guardians whatever dower
you have spent on them. Such is the command of God. God is Full of
Knowledge and Wisdom. If any of your wives have deserted you and gone to
the Unbelievers, and you have accession (i.e. coming over of a women from
the other side), then pay to those whose wives have deserted the equivalent of
what they had spent on their dower. Fear God, in Whom you believe. O
Prophet, the women entering Islam should pledge an oath of allegiance: (1) to
worship non but the One True God; (2) not to steal; (3) not to indulge sex
outside the marriage tie; (4) not to commit infanticide; (5) not to indulge in
slander or scandal; and (6) generally, to obey loyally the law and principles of
Islam. If these pledges are sincerely given for future conduct admission to
Islam is open. If there is anything in the past, for which there is evidence of
sincere repentance, forgiveness is to be prayed for. God forgives in such cases.
O Believers, be not friendly with those people on whom is the Wrath of God.
The Unbelievers, who do not believe in the Hearafter (Future Life), can
therefore have no hope beyond this life. Miserable indeed is this life to them.
