WHY DISNEY IS GOOD

By Paris, Jesus, Jack and Douy

DISNEY AS A MONOPOLY
• Disney using its massive purchasing power should not be seen
as a devious plot to take over the film industry, but instead as a
company that knows what its audiences want, and has proven
that they can take care of their own. With the imminent
release of the next, strongly promising, Star Wars film, Disney
may prove once again that they are more than capable of
doing great things with their properties. Disney doesn’t do risk;
Disney knows how to make a great product, and a product
that stands the test of time. So, even if Disney ever became a
true monopoly, which it really doesn’t show signs of, there
really doesn’t seem to be anything to worry about.

• Their expansion into the global market has had
definite positive effects, increased diversity across
their output and a focus on quality that hasn’t been
sacrificed over profits. The worldwide appeal has no
doubt been a boon to cinemagoers around the globe,
with ever strengthening markets in overseas
territories meaning you no longer have to live in
North America or Mainland Europe to have good
access to cinemas.

• Despite being powerful they are still a desired employer for
many interested in working for Disney may have something to
do with how well the company performed on other portions
of the same survey. Respondents considered Disney the
second-most trustworthy of the 100 companies, they ranked it
fifth for having the most positive global impact, and it landed in
fourth place among companies that “care the most about you.”
And perhaps readers think working at Disney would provide
for good job security. (The IT workers it laid off last year would
no doubt disagree). When asked which company they thought
would be around in 100 years, Disney again came in at No. 1.

DISNEY AND HOMOSEXUALITY
• LeFou was the first homosexual character to appear in a Disney film.

• Director Bill Condon explained in an interview with British gay lifestyle publication Attitude
Magazine how the LeFou character will be used in the movie to highlight homosexuality.

• "LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss
Gaston," … "He's confused about what he want … It's somebody who's just realizing that he has
these feelings.” … The studio is sending out a message that this is normal and natural – and this is
a message that will be heard in every country of the world, even countries where it's still socially
unacceptable or even illegal to be gay.”
