Judul : Perceptions of Senior High School English Teachers about 21st
Century Teaching and Learning

1. Research Problems:
 What teaching practices that support students’ learning of the 21 st century skills
have been done by Senior High School English Teachers?
 How are Senior High School Teachers’ perceptions regarding the 21st century
teaching and learning?
2. Research Objectives:
 To investigate teaching practices that support students’ learning of the 21 st century
skills that have been done by Senior High School English Teachers and how Senior
High School Teachers’ perceptions are, regarding the 21st century teaching and
learning.
3. Assumption:
 The assumption underlying this research is that there are certain categories for 21st
century teaching and learning. Senior High School English teachers who have been
conducting some teaching practices that support students’ learning of the 21 st
century skills are regarded as they have done 21st century teaching and learning.
4. Research Design:
 The research design used in this research is survey research involving Senior High
English teachers’ perceptions about 21st century teaching and learning.
5. Subjects of the research:
 The population of this research is State Senior High School English teachers in
Situbondo and simple random sampling technique is used to draw the sample.
6. The Instrument:
 The instrument used in this research design is questionnaire. The questionnaire is
adopted from Ravitz (2014). Each section of the questionnaire provides (1) the
definition of 21st century skills, (2) a list of related practices, and (3) questions
about perceptions. After each definition, the questionnaire asks about the
frequency of 5 to 8 teaching practices related to that skill (e.g., having students
work in groups to support collaboration). The response choices are 1 ‘Almost
never’; 2 ‘A few times a semester’; 3 ‘1-3 times per month’; 4 ‘1-3 times per week’;
5 ‘Almost daily’. In addition to the frequency of different practices, the teachers are
also asked how much they perceive having taught and assessed each skill, using
critical thinking as an example: (a) I have tried to develop students' critical thinking
skills; (b) Most students have learned critical thinking skills while in my class; and,
(c) I have been able to effectively assess students' critical thinking skills. Response
choices are 1 ‘Not really’; 2 ‘To a minor extent’; 3 ‘To a moderate extent’; 4 ‘To a
great extent’, 5 ‘To a very great extent’. The validity and reliability of this
instrument already tested by Ravitz (2014) and it is proven that the instrument has
high validity and reliability. Even though, the researcher will try out the instrument
first in order to make sure it has high validity and reliability. The researcher also will
convert the questionnaire into in the form of Google Form.
7. Procedure of Data Collection:
 The questionnaire is given to the teachers in the form of Google Form so that the
teachers can fill in the questionnaire anywhere and anytime without having to
meet the researcher. The researcher will give the link to the questionnaire to some
of English teachers that the researcher has already known and asks their help to
spread the link to other English teachers. The researcher also will use social media
(Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WA, Telegram) to spread the link to English
teachers.
8. Data Analysis:
 The data elicited from the questionnaires are descriptively analyzed and presented
in the form of frequency and percentage (simple basic statistical techniques)
automatically by the help of Google Form automatic data analysis. Each time the
English teacher fill in the questionnaire, the data analysis will be automatically
updated in real time.
