Class: Math 7
House Project
Below you are given the values for several measurements in a 2- dimensional house. Your
job is to figure out the values for all of the other lines in the house, using your imagination of how
the 2-D house will fold up into a 3-dimentional one, and also your knowledge of the Pythagorean
Theorem. You will need these values to answer the 10 questions that you will be given once your
measurements are complete, and also to properly construct your house later on in the project. All
of the additional information that you will need for this project is on the other side of this sheet.
Good luck and have fun!

Class: Math 7
House Project

- The pieces information that you will need for the project are:
o Area of a Rectangle = Height x Width
o Area of a Triangle = Height x Width x 0.5
o Volume of a Box = Length x Width x Height
o The Pythagorean Theorem states that for a right triangle, the
length of the two short sides squared and added together equals
the length of the long side squared (a2 + b2 = c2).

- In the numbered questions (1-10), you must have both the correct
answer and the correct unit in order to get the question right and
receive your next question.
o Eg. If the correct answer is 100 cm2 and you write 100 cm as your
answer, then you will be told that you have the wrong answer.

- The first team to correctly answer all 10 questions and show me all of
their questions cards with the answers on them, as well as their house
diagram with all of the values on it, wins the prize.

- Project Hints:
o If a question seems too difficult to solve, try to break it down into
smaller, more manageable parts, and simply solve the smaller
parts to come up with an answer for the whole.
o Work carefully and methodically. I know that this project is a race
between the teams, but you will save yourself a lot of time and
effort if you write down all of the steps in your questions and make
sure that you do them right the first time. The team that wins will
be the team that works slowly and carefully and makes the fewest
mistakes.
o You may want to consult your textbook or other sources to brush
up on topics that you may have forgotten or are unfamiliar with.
