 History
The OBMG was formed in 1994 by 6
Maritime College graduates who wanted
to help improve the education
possibilities for African American and
minority students at SUNY Maritime
College. This is accomplished by
providing scholarship opportunities,
financial assistance, mentoring,
networking and an education on the
history and rich legacy of Blacks and
Minorities in the maritime industry.
The OBMG’s role has been expanded to
now include community outreach,
recruitment, special events and
educational partnerships designed to
increase minority participation in the
maritime industry both ashore and afloat.
Mission Statement
“To assist and encourage by educating
and increasing public awareness
regarding minority involvement in the
maritime industry through recruitment,
mentoring, scholarships, and
fundraising.”
Donate
The OBMG is a non-profit 501(C)(3)
organization. All donations are tax
deductable and go entirely to the
scholarships as the members absorb all
administrative costs. Each and every
donation has a direct impact on the
future of deserving students.
Scholarships
Since its inception the OBMG has awarded
over 130 scholarships. The scholarships are
awarded based on academic achievement as
well as financial need. Leadership abilities,
social consciousness, and work ethic all
play an important role in the process of
deciding who receives an award.
The scholarship awards are given each year
at a Black History Month Dinner hosted by
SUNY Maritime College on the last
Thursday in February. This has long been a
forum for inspiring and motivational Guest
Speakers as well as lively entertainment.
