INTRODUCTION
Logistics are the heart of modern transport systems. Present modern
technology and spatial developments have improved the cost, reliability and
efficiency of transportation systems. At the same time, the negative environmental
impacts of transportation have gained wide recognition and were the core issues of
sustainability, especially in urban areas. Since the applications of logistics are
generally positive for the efficiency of transport systems, it has been suggested that
logistics are environmentally friendly. It is argued that although logistics may be
linked to less environmentally damaging transportation systems, they have created
a set of paradoxes that may prove to be the contrary to what is believed.
LOGISTICS
Part of the supply chain process that plans, implements, and controls the
efficient, effective flow and storage of goods, services, and related information
from the point of origin to the point of consumption in order to meet customer
requirements.
CITY LOGISTICS
The process of totally optimizing the logistics and transport activities by
private companies in urban areas while considering the traffic environment, traffic
congestion and energy consumption within the framework of a market economy
PURPOSE OF STUDY
The purpose of the study is to provide transportation models for city logistics.
There is a two way interaction between city logistics and urban traffic congestion,
environment. City logistics are impacted by urban traffic congestions and
environment.
1) MICRO LOGISTICS
2) MACRO LOGISTICS
Both micro and macro logistics benefit from greater ICT use and intelligent
transportation technologies.
On an average an urban commuter spends about 2 - 3 hours every day on the roads
to reach the work place, school or home where as a decade back the same distance
would have been covered in about half the time as that of now. Considering the
exponential growth of the number of Vehicles and the ever increasing population
the situation is bound to reach alarming levels in the near future. At the same time
all the technical advancements made in various fields of Science and Technology
provide effective tools to check, manage and plan the ‘Vehicular traffic’.
FUNCTIONS OF TMS
Transportation mode and carrier selection
Management of air and maritime transport
Real time vehicles tracking
