MECHANICS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES SIMPLE STRESSES

SIMPLE STRESSES

Normal Stress
1. A rod is composed of an aluminum section
rigidly attached between steel and bronze
sections, as shown in the figure. Axial loads
are applied at the positions indicated. If P =
3000 lb and the cross- sectional area of the
rod is 0.5 in2, determine the stress in each
section.

2. A 12-inches square steel bearing plate lies

between an 8-inches diameter wooden post
and a concrete footing as shown in the figure.
Determine the maximum value of the load P if
the stress in wood is limited to 1800 psi and that
in concrete to 650 psi.

3. Find the stresses in members BC, BD, and CF for

the truss shown in the figure. Indicate if the
stress is in tension or compression. The cross-
sectional area of each member is 1600 mm2.

4. A hollow steel tube with a wall thickness of 10 mm must carry a compressive load
of 600 kN. Determine the minimum outside diameter of the tube if the stress is
limited to 130 MN/m2.

Shear Stress

5. If the maximum shearing strength is to be

used. Find the value of P if the diameter in the
clevis shown is 30 mm. The shearing strength
of the bolt is 300 MPa.

6. A 200-mm-diameter pulley is
prevented from rotating relative to
60-mm-diameter shaft by a 70-
mm-long key. If a torque T = 2.2
kN·m is applied to the shaft,
determine the width b if the
allowable shearing stress in the key
is 60 MPa.

7. Two timber are glued to each other. Determine

the compressive and shear stress occurring at the
joint. Assume P = 250 kN and = 300.

Bearing Sress

8. The lap joint shown is fastened by four ¾-in.-diameter rivets. Calculate the
maximum safe load P that can be applied if the shearing stress in the rivets is
limited to 14 ksi and the bearing stress in the plates is limited to 18 ksi. Assume the
applied load is uniformly distributed among the four rivets.

9. In the clevis shown, find the minimum bolt diameter and the
minimum thickness of each yoke that will support a load P = 14
kips without exceeding a shearing stress of 12 ksi and a bearing
stress of 20 ksi.

Additional Problems

10. Three forces, each of magnitude P = 4 kN, are

applied to the mechanism shown. Determine the
cross-sectional area of the uniform portion of rod
BE for which the normal stress in that portion is +100
MPa.

11. The frame shown consists of four wooden

members, ABC, DEF, BE, and CF. Knowing
that each member has a 2 × 4-in.
rectangular cross section and that each pin
has a 1/2-in. diameter, determine the
maximum value of the average normal
stress (a) in member BE, (b) in member CF.

12. When the force P reached 8 kN, the wooden

specimen shown failed in shear along the
surface indicated by the dashed line.
Determine the average shearing stress along
that surface at thetime of failure.

13. Link BC is 6 mm thick, has a width w = 25 mm, and is

made of a steel with a 480-MPa ultimate strength in
tension. What was the safety factor used if the structure
shown was designed to support a 16-kN load P?

14. Three steel bolts are to be used to attach the steel

plate shown to a wooden beam. Knowing that the
plate will support a 110-kN load, that the ultimate
shearing stress for the steel used is 360 MPa, and that
a factor of safety of 3.35 is desired, determine the
required diameter of the bolts.
