Senior Capstone Practicum Proposal Form 2017-18

Student Name: Raymond Cruz Period: 2

Topic: (few words): Depression

Statement of the problem: Teenagers are more likely to be affected by depression

Two-part Thesis Question: Why are today’s teens more affected by depression and what can be done to
help the teenagers of Poly High from feeling depression?

Description of practicum (What do you see this journey being for you?)
I can see this journey being very difficult since not only will I have to go on personal boundaries, but I am
going to write a book where the main character will encounter/ overcome depression through their year of
Highschool; while meeting new/old friends along the way.

Questions used for Research (Annotated Bibliography):

1) What are the Causes of Depression for Teenagers?
2) Why are Teenagers more vulnerable than others to feel Depression?
3) How can the effects of Depression reflect off the personality/character of a Teen’s Daily life?
4) What are the methods Teenagers can take to overcome Depression?
5) What are several methods Depression can be expressed within a story’s plot?

What information did you learn through your research that you will apply to the practicum? Provide
specific details.
-the causes of one’s depression can vary depending on the person and/or a specific event
-the symptoms can go from feeling empty to even suicide
-the victim will lose interest in once fun activities
-there is medication to help with depression; though the side effects may be harmful
-the families/friends of the victims are affected by their depression
-most depression stories reflect off real events in society
-many of society’s teens are likely to come across depression
-the thoughts of the victims will lead to the idea of killing themselves
-there are agencies/health sites open to the public that explain the causes, effects, and give treatment
options for the victim
In order to truly apply this information in my project, most of the characters will have to be teenagers who
have backgrounds relating to depression or are going through depression.

Learning Goals/Outcomes: What will you understand and/or be able to do as a result of your practicum?
I should be able to understand how teenagers are more vulnerable to depression and how they react
through the emotion. With enough information and their permission, I could create the essential
characters including the protagonist/antagonist for the story. I could also read up on depression stories and
see how the authors write them(But I can’t use their ideas for my own!!) and decide whether the ending
should involve overcoming depression or not.

List the steps you will take to complete the practicum and how will you document each and every step
for completing your product (emails, photos, videos, interviews- recorded or transcribed, surveys, phone
call logs, etc...). You may add steps/spaces as needed. A few steps will not do. Think of every possible
step.

Step Evidence

See if anyone I know has been depressed(Teens) Copies of the survey

-make an anonymous survey with questions that relate to depression

Learning Stretch: How will this project be a new and meaningful challenge for you?
This project not only has me exploring unknown talents, but it also allows me to possibly understand how
people feel and how to communicate much better with people. It also may serve as something one can
read to help with treatment, but that’s probably a dream. The project will prove meaningful since it not
only displays how one may think and feel, but how one may act as they go through depression.

How will you display your final practicum in your digital portfolio? (Pictures, videos, screencasts, etc…)
Remember that ALL of your evidence must be on your portfolio. An interview must be filmed or have a
transcript. Every picture must have a verbal explanation (screencastify?) Anyone should be able to
access your website and be able to understand every step you took. Be thorough here!
The only way I could display the final practicum on the digital portfolio is by making the prototype and
the final manuscript on ON Google slides! As for the evidence, most of it may be links to the sites that
hold the information while any interview will be on a transcript. Other than that, there may be the book;
which I can post the title on the portfolio.
