Golden Nugget Special
F
ord dealers in Pacific Northwest
states received a limited edition
model in 1968 in the form of the
Golden Nugget Mustang. Little has been
documented about this rare pony, but an ad
from the period declared that 525 Golden
Nugget coupes would be shortly arriving
at area dealerships with exclusive Sunlit
Gold (color code Y) paint, black vinyl tops,
black hood panels, black striping, white-
wall tires, wheel covers, and a gold-colored
plaque inscribed with the buyer’s name.
Research has documented that all Gold-
en Nugget Mustangs were built at the San
Jose Ford factory (represented by an “R”
in the VIN), then shipped to the Seattle
district (74). Each GN Mustang will have
the numbers “1111” following the Seattle
DSO designation on the data plate.
It is not known if Ford built the adver-
tised 525 GN Mustangs.

eighboring states Virginia
and North Carolina shared a
one-year appearance package
in 1968 known as the Cardinal Edition.
Named for the two states’ official bird
(they also share the dogwood as a state
flower), the Cardinal Edition was ad-
vertised as a Candyapple Red (T code)
coupe with 200-cid six-cylinder power
(T), black interior, flip-open gas cap,
GT stripe, chrome wheel lip molding,
wheel covers, and a diamond-shaped
emblem sporting the head of a Cardi-
nal on the sail pillar.
Of course, dealers promoted the
long list of Mustang options that could
be applied to the CE, so it appears that
anything short of a body style change
was possible. More than one CE has
been uncovered with V-8 power. It is
not known how long the CE campaign
lasted, but advertising appears to have
started around the end of March.
Because Candyapple Red was a reg-
ular color option in 1968, there is no
easy way to determine the authenticity
of a suspected CE other than through
original documentation. All Cardinal
Edition coupes will show a DSO of 25
(Richmond) on their data plates.

Aside from belts, hoses, tires and battery, about

A little elbow grease and an S.O.S. pad helped bring
back some of the luster to the original chrome. The
original bed liner remains in the trunk and the engine
has never been apart.
And the engine, of course, was a big part of the
appeal of the legendary early 1950s Hornets. It’s part
of what made them racing terrors in their day and
automotive icons years later. The Hornets were rolled
out in September of 1951 for the 1951 model year and
featured the “Step Down” design that had debuted in
1948 on one of the first new car models to be un-
veiled following World War II. The design was never
intended to make the Hudsons fast race cars, but that
dirt track pilots soon discovered that the Hornets’ low
center of gravity gave them a big advantage over the
competition when it came to traction and handling. with a slim three-spoke steering wheel.

“I really didn’t know much about
them until I got in the club,” Kennedy
says. “I’ve learned a lot about them.
These ‘53s were the last years of the
‘soft’ rear end. They squared them off
in ‘54 and that’s how you can really tell
the difference. After that they sold off
and became Rambler and that’s when
[things] deteriorated.”
Kennedy is happy to drive the
Hudson to local shows these days, but
he doesn’t want to add too many miles
to the odometer. With the car in such
pristine original shape, he wants to pre-
serve it the best he can. “It’s very nice
to drive in. It’s fun to drive,” he says.
“We used to store it up north at our
cabin, and two years ago when we were
ready to put it away for the winter, there
is a 10-mile stretch of flat road and I
decided to see what ‘old Henry’ here
will do, and I decided to slow
down after I hit 95 [laughs]. It
was known as the race car of
its time. It wanted to go, and
the scary thing about this car is
the faster you go, the cooler it
runs. It doesn’t like going 60.
It stays warm at 60. If you get
it above 60, she’ll start to cool
down!”
Kennedy says he had one
particularly memorable voyage
with the car when he headed
south to Milwaukee to show
his mother-in-law the car after
it was back on the road. “There
were three lanes of traffic and
all of a sudden traffic started
slowing down … When we got
up a little further we saw a red
Challenger with the a license
plate that said “McQueen’ so we pulled
up next to it and we had Lightning
McQueen and Doc Hudson going down
the highway next to each other. That
was pretty cool. We got a lot of looks
with that.”
Since it’s been in Kennedy’s clan
for this long, the Hornet is definitely
not going to be finding a new home
anytime soon. There have been offers
before, and there will likely be more in-
quiries in the future, but Kennedy isn’t
listening. “I’ve been offered to swap
even, straight-up, for a ’68 Camaro SS,”
he laughs. “And my son [Ryan], who is
very involved, said ‘Dad, we could do
that!’ But no, I could never sell it. It’s a
family heirloom now.”

Vintage car wrecks from the Old Cars Weekly vault
A few years back, Old Cars Weekly was fortunate enough to inherit a fantastic collec-
tion of car wreck photos taken by longtime investigator and photographer Rodman Bingham
of Menlo Park, Calif. According to his daughter, Patrice Bingham Offenhauser, Rodman had “a
police scanner speaker in every room of the house and his car — big sweeping antenna on
the back. He even had a special headset speaker under his pillow... It wasn’t so much being an
‘ambulance chaser’ as much as priding himself on having the first, and the best, photos of a
crime or accident scene which could then be used in the newspaper or in court proceedings.”
Following are a few of his memorable mangled iron shots, as well as several Pennsylvania-
based accident photos uncovered by Rusty Herlocher.
Mercedes meets
Mopar. In this
particular case, it
appears that the

Plymouth won the
battle as it has
hardly any notice-
able damage other
than bent bumper
guards, a ding in
the bumper end and
some minor dings in
the headlight trim
piece. In contrast,
the classic Mer-
cedes grille shell
is twisted like a
pretzel and the
hood, fenders and
bumpers are bent
out of shape.
Roller skating can be a dangerous

pastime, and not only due to the chance of
falling fl at on your face. These derby dam-
sels ran into something on their way home
from the rink and dented up their 1951 Dodge
Wayfarer coupe. The car is one of only 6,702
built. In the background behind the car is
the Mercantile Acceptance Company where G.I.
Loans were available to World war II Vets.
“Stop” it says on the road, in big letters, but someone didn’t stop fast enough to avoid hitting a 1952
Chevrolet Styleline Special two-door sedan that belonged to a San Francisco newspaper known as the
Call-Bulletin. The 1953 Mercury smashed the Chevy’s left rear fender and the ’55 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer
hit the Mercury. The script on the fender of the Dodge reads “Royal Lancer.” If it was a Custom Royal Lancer
it would say only “Royal.”
“Ooouch!” might have been uttered by the Voice of the West after this crash on the evening of October 14, 1957.
We’re guessing that truck No. 44 in the San Francisco Chronicle’s newspaper delivery fl eet was a 1953 GMC 1-ton
Panel Delivery.
Now lacking a hood, wind-

shield and backlite, this
1955 Dodge Royal Lancer
two-door hardtop looks
like the loser in a spin-
the-bottle duel. The term
Lancer identifi ed Dodge’s
two-door hardtop and
25,831 were made for the
model year. This one was a
near-new car,as the photo
is dated October 13, 1955.
When it left the showroom
months, weeks or days
earlier, this car went out
the door for $2,370.
Bayshore Tractor &

Equipment Company,
which sold Ferguson
tractors, was where
this 1956 Cadillac
wound up after it was
involved in an accident
with a Divco milk truck
and a Peterbilt trac-
tor-trailer near the
city limits in Redwood
City, California. A little
digging reveals that
Bayshore Tractor &
Equipment was located
on Bayshore Road in
Palo Alto. The date
of the three-vehicle
crash was June 19, 1958.
The warning sign says
“Stop Ahead,” but the
owner of the 1956 Chev-
rolet Bel Air two-door
hardtop obviously didn’t
heed the warning. The
V-8 powered Chevy took
a dive into a big hole in
the road. There was no
cell phone use to blame
for this June 13, 1960 ac-
cident.The smile on the
policeman’s face seems
to suggest that no one
was seriously hurt in
this mishap. The car
seems to be missing its
rear fender script and
logo badge.
This 1956 Ford

Fairlane four-door
sedan tried to
“hedge all bets”
after banging into a
1959 Pontiac station
wagon on April 25,
1960. The Ford driver
did some trick driv-
ing to avoid running
over a small tree
and wound up wedged
into the hedge. The
Ford suffered some
moderate front end
damage and did a
number all along
the passenger side
of the Pontiac.
Someone at Tri-City Blueprint
& Supply was very unlucky. They
waited 25 years for this won-
derful car, only to see it get
crashed up in a fender bender.
It is a model that you didn’t see
every day in the United States
– a 1956 Goliath GP700 limousine.
Goliath was a German automaker
and German car companies used
the term “limousine” to iden-
tify sedans. This one is of the
two-door variety. The accident
occurred October 13, 1959.
Looking a bit like a new hire
on her first day on the job
at a travel agency, this 1956
Oldsmobile did a bit more
damage to the office than
you see at fi rst glance. The
car appears to have smashed
through the window and “re-
arranged” the furniture a bit.
This crash happened on June
3, 1963. In addition to the car
itself, office items like the
dial phones and typewriter are
collector’s items now.
A 1956 Plymouth
sedan managed
to get wedged
in a culvert
lined with
sandbags. The
incident drew
a big group of
spectators.
This 1957 Lincoln Premiere two-door hardtop. It sold for $5,149 when it was new and 15,185 were manufactured.
This one was pretty badly banged up in the March 8, 1957 crash.
“Car 503, where are you?”
In this case the City of
Palo Alto squad car — a
1958 Ford Custom 300
four-door sedan — butted
heads with a 1952 Ford
convertible. It’s likely
that taxpayers seeing the
city’s near-new cruiser
in this condition weren’t
very happy. The date of
the accident was March
19, 1958.
In late-1950s accidents — such as this crash on June 30, 1959 — it was

common to see foreign cars tangled up with good old American iron.
The Tudor sedan facing the camera is a decade-old 1949 Ford. The
squarish, two-toned vehicle is a 1958 Volvo PV445 Duet station wagon.

No matter what it looks

like, these convertibles
aren’t “kissing cousins.” The
one on the left came from
Ford of Dearborn, Michigan,
while the one on the right
is from Oldsmobile of Lan-
sing. One of 49,986 Sunliners
made in 1956, the Ford was
only worth $700 at the time
of the accident on June 22,
1961. The 1960 Olds 98 ragtop
is a bit newer and rarer
with 7,284 built. It was
worth about $3,295 when it
was damaged.

Maybe the letters on the license plate mean “unrestored!” And it’s very likely that this 1961 Chevrolet
Impala four-door hardtop stayed that way after its accident on June 13, 1962. The heavy rear end damage
would be too expensive to repair at reasonable cost. Though many sources indicate deluxe wheel discs were
a standard part of the Impala trim package, this one has small “dog dish” hubcaps. It does, however, have an
optional V-8 engine.

broken window, a twisted
bumper and a bent tail
light.

storefront glass and
damaged merchandise.
The calamity started
in the street in front
of the Firestone store
when the Nova collided
with a truck, jumped
the curb and proceeded
into the station. The fi
re department covered
the area with foam as a
precautionary measure.

The 1956 Ford Thunderbird convertible
came with a 292-cid V-8 as standard, but 90
percent of the 15,631 produced carried the
optional 312-cid V-8 engine. It is difficult
for any Thunderbird enthusiast to look at
a Bird in this condition, and making it worse
is the fact that the car was only one day
old. The driver bought the car that morn-
ing, then raced down the highway late that
night, lost control, and flew into a heav-
ily wooded area, buckling and twisting the
rear end almost beyond recognition. Note
the hardtop lying in the back seat.
