In the January 21, 2018 ser-
mon "Abandoning Our Nets", I
spoke of the theoretical nets we
carry around with us during our
lives. They change and grow in a
healthy life, but we can sometimes hold on too
tightly to them for fear of what may happen if we
let go. Specifically I mentioned “me too” and the
"Net of Silence," and the movement of "Times Up"
and how the silence is being broken by voices
collectively saying "No more sexual harassment
or assault!" This is a kairos time, the time ripe for
exposing the shame of this behavior, and the be-
ginning of healing for untold numbers, even some
of us, from it.
Minister, author, teacher and nonviolence-
activist Walter Wink wrote books and articles
about the powers and authorities present in his-
tory, and how Jesus teaches us about responding
to acts of evil and oppression in history and in our
lives today. In his article "Jesus' Third Way", he
talks about the truth of certain Scriptures whose
meanings were altered by Bible translators in the
King James Version to avoid the possibly
"'seditious...dangerous, and trayterous' tenden-
cies in the marginal notes printed in the Geneva
Bible, which included endorsement of the right to
disobey a tyrant".
In the sermon on January 28, entitled
"Jesus' Third Way", I expounded further on the
true meaning of Matthew 5:38-41: "You have
heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a
tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist
an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right
cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to

sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as
well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go
also the second mile".
Wink also talks in his works about and
has coined the phrase, "The Myth of Redemp-
tive Violence". In his article from 1999 he states,
"This Myth of Redemptive Violence is the real
myth of the modern world. It, and not Judaism or
Christianity or Islam, is the dominant religion in
our society today".(I’ll preach about that too.)
This is what we are often drawn to in
movies, books, television, the news, even
though we so desperately desire peace!
I will continue to preach on Jesus' Third
Way, as we celebrate Black History on February
11, at 3pm, in powerful Worship with God's
Word spoken once again by the Rev. Dr.
Vernon Percy Howard, from St. Mark Union
Church, UCC. Our theme is "The Peace We
Long For..." and will be celebrated in music,
dancing, joy, and feasting.
Life is about relationship and celebration
through and in Christ. Let us come together as
community each day, wherever we are, in cele-
brating life in Christ, in Worship, observation of
Ash Wednesday, the Black History Celebration
and the thought-provoking Lenten study of THE
GOSPEL ACCORDING TO DR. SEUSS.
It is time to take another look at the nets
we carry and to see how they might need to be
torn apart, mended, or abandoned altogether!
