Topic/Concept/Skill:

Introducing the Holocaust, reading fluently, world to self connection

Related Standard:

5.RL.3.2 Describe how a narrator or speaker’s point of view influences how events are
portrayed.

Background:

Students may have previous knowledge on the Holocaust but this will be an introductory
lesson on Hitler and his regime.

Main Objective of Instruction:

After instruction, students should have a basic understanding of World War II and the
countries involved. They will show their knowledge by completing a map of Europe by
the end of class time.

Teacher Materials/Resources:

Pre-reading questions, guiding notes, computer paper, PowerPoint, maps of Europe,

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry

Student Materials:

Writing utensil, coloring utensils (preferably crayons or colored pencils), handouts

provided by teacher

Anticipatory Set (Introductory Approach):

I will ask students, “What do you know about World War II?” I will inform students that
we will be starting a new novel about the Holocaust. I will give them pre-reading
questions regarding the novel and I will give students time to complete it. After the
students are finished, we will talk about the questions (10 minutes).

Instructional Procedures (Whole Group):

After discussing the pre-reading questions, I will tell students that our story takes place in
Europe. I will use Google Earth to show where Denmark is. I have a foldable for students
to fill out while following along with my PowerPoint. The first activity is for the students
to look at the cover of their book and write down what they think the book will be about.
I will give them time to do so and then we will discuss as a class (15 minutes). I will then
go through the PowerPoint about Europe and Hitler. After the PowerPoint, students will
color a map of Europe (15 minutes). Then we will read the first chapter together (15
minutes). I will read the first half and talk through some points. Then students will be
divided into groups of four to read the rest of the chapter. I will give groups a question
they have to answer. Once everyone is finished, we will talk about those questions along
with the Wrap Up questions on the PowerPoint.

Provisions for Individual and/or Group Differences:

For low students or with IEPs, I will have them read the first chapter in a small group
with Mrs. Grubb and/or Mrs. Decker.

Closure:

To wrap up the lesson, I will ask questions about the first chapter and what they thought.
I will review what countries Hitler took over during World War II (5 minutes).

Evaluation of Learning:

I will evaluate students learning by grading their maps of Europe and hearing their
discussion at the end of class.

Independent Practice:

If students do not finish coloring the map of Europe, it will be homework.

Write down words you didn’t know in Chapter 1 (including foreign words).

What was the Resistance? What was their job?

What happened at the corner with Annemarie, Ellen, and Kirsti? How did
the author describe the incident?

What was the Free Danes? Did all of the citizens of Copenhagen know about
it?

What did Kirsti want to eat at the end of Chapter 1? When did Mrs.
Johansen say she could eat those things?
