1. TOPIC

The Internet of Things (IoT) Technology

2. OBJETIVES

To define the term Internet of Things.

To describe the impact of IoT on society.
To identify an IoT device, its features and prospectives.

3. INSTRUCTIONS

Read and research about IoT and answer next questionnaire:

1. Describe what is Internet of Things (IoT).

The internet of things or called the internet of things in Spanish is basically the application of
technology that we currently have to achieve the interconnection of any element with another around
it. [1]

2. Describe the Importance of the Internet of Things (IoT) in Society.

The internet of things has special importance in today's society, even more than the digital age,
because thanks to this we can count on automations of elements that were never thought of before.

The internet of things is present almost in all our daily activities, for example at present it is very
common that since the watches we use already have built-in sensors and in addition to providing us
with the exact time, they can also monitor our vital signs, upload them to Internet and offer from a
diet to an exercise routine to improve our lifestyle, and this way are more and more things that we
can connect to the Internet and achieve so that each element is connected with another around. [1]
3. Identify and analyze a device that is an IoT device now, but in the past was a non-IoT
device. Describe and list the features of the device.

The reclosers are an automatic opening and closing device that allows the circuit to be isolated, it is used
in voltage media systems more precisely in the elective distribution stage.
The reclosers are based on the connection and the connection in the distribution line, the connection and
disconnection are made up to a limit of 4 times in the presence of faults in the distribution system, it means
that the connection and disconnection was of mechanical form, that the case persisted and could not be
solved, the recloser remained in permanent disconnection, that even the personnel of the electric company
on duty made the revision and correction of the failure.

Characteristics:

 Limited number for connection and disconnection.

 They are mechanical, manual.
 Requires the presence of the responsible company in case of persisting the failure.
The reclosers through the implementation of Internet in things, it is currently common to appreciate the
connection of reclosers to a scada system through a communication network, which allows us to monitor
and operate it in a remote way, that is, a distance that It has a superior capacity for response and correction
of failures on the part of the company it has charge.

Characteristics:

Automatic reclosers OSM

 IEC 870 DNP3 communication protocols
 Mod Bus for SCADA systems
 Remote terminal units.
 Use of fiber optic network or radio links

4. Compare the functions of the device in the past to the functions of the device now.

The recloser itself is a derivation of a switch that allows opening a circuit in the presence of faults
caused in the transmission lines due to transients caused by the medium.

4.1. Switching function:

The circuit breakers must close and cut all currents within the range of their assigned values, from
small inductive and capacitive load currents to the short-circuit current, and this under all network
fault conditions such as ground faults, phase opposition meteorological influences, etc. [2]

When a switch de-energizes a line, it is not reconnected, so the service on the distribution line
that caused the failure will be cut, and to restore the service, the utility will have to detect the location
of the fault and send people trained to return and restore service by manually connecting the switch

4.2. Recloser function:

The recloser is an automatic opening and closing device that allows isolating the output circuit of
a substation when a fault occurs in the system, the automatic reconnection program is adjustable to
the demands of the environment, it’s monitoring and operation is remote, is remotely controlled. [3]
The recloser uses the SCADA communication method via Ethernet. Which allows operators to
check the status of each of the reclosers anywhere through the computer. This method of
communication with the device is very useful since at the moment there is a definitive cut, this sends
a warning signal to the electric company for its respective correction of failure in the least possible
time.

5. For your chosen IoT device, list any improvements or any diminishments if they exist, over
the non-IOT device. Describe any limitations that are present in the new IoT version of the
device.

The IoT device chosen is the recloser in which we have found several improvements compared
to the switch, since the recloser can be manipulated manually or remotely, one of its facilities is that
you can configure the number of reconnections in a defined time interval.

Recloser improvements:

 It is able to detect an overload, interrupt it and reconnect automatically to energize the line.
 It is equipped with a control that allows several successive reconnections, and the interval and
sequence of these reconnections can be varied, in addition to communicating via the SCADA
system or remotely.
 Contains a magnetic actuator, is operated by capacitors in the control cabinet which are loaded
and unloaded by the electronic controller.

Recloser limitations:

 The recloser is limited to perform 3 to 5 automatic reconnections depending on its

configuration at a specific time.
 The recloser is used only for medium voltage lines and electrical distribution.
 The automatic reconnection mechanism is designed for 10000 mechanical operations.

6. Describe any privacy issues with the IoT device that never existed in the original version
of the device. Compare the price of the original device to the price of the new IoT version
of the device.
