My grain and dairy servings were much higher than the recommended. It is
recommended that you only have 1 to 2 servings of dairy is because the molecules of
lactose (sugar inside of dairy products) are too big to be absorbed by the small intestine
so lactase (enzyme) has to attach to the lactose and break it down so it can be
distributed, its structure is more complex so it is more difficult to digest. Grain is
recommended “at most meals” because the grain starts breaking down in your mouth.
Chewing breaks it apart and chemicals in the saliva start to break the food into smaller
peices, then it goes to your stomach where a small amount of digestion takes place. In
the intestine the grains are broken down even more and are to distributed to cells for
energy. Following the recommended serving guidelines are important because for
homeostasis to occur your body has to be at balance, and if you are putting hard to
digest foods into your body that cannot happen.
This project helped me look at what I was eating and what I was gaining/losing from it.
This has shown me that I need to start eating more vegetables/fruits and need to eat
less sugars.
