CHAPTER I - INTRODUCTION

Sports have been around for a very long time, and is something that everyone is familiar

with, whether you participate in it or not. Sports could be a past time for some people, a means of

exercising for others, or could simply be a means of entertainment for people who enjoy

watching sports without partaking in it. Wherever you go, sports are present, though differing in

shapes or forms. Sports have a lot of positive impacts on an individual, may it be physically or

psychologically. Physically, partaking in sports could aid in achieving good health and physical

fitness. On another aspect, sports could have an effect on the development of a person’s social

and communication skills, and could greatly encourage sportsmanship and the spirit of healthy

competition.

1.1 Background and Nature of the Project

Both amateur and professional athletes are in need of a designated facility for them to be

able to train properly, and this is where a sports complex proves to be the most beneficial. A

sports complex is basically a group of sports facilities. A complex may include football stadiums,

baseball stadiums, track and field stadiums, swimming pools, and gymnasiums. Various types of

sports facilities are crucial in a well-designed sports complex in order to cater to the training

needs of different kinds of athletes. The Philippines has quite a number of sports complexes and

facilities, yet majority of these training centers are outdated, rundown, or poorly maintained.

Most of these complexes lack updated facilities or technologies that could keep up with sports

training facilities found in foreign countries, and therefore lack the capability to provide our

Filipino athletes with the proper training and aid that they need for the development of their

skills.
Compared to other countries, athletes in the Philippines are not quite prioritized and are

not given the same quality or level of training as those in foreign countries. Most amateur

athletes settle for settle for subpar training centers offering mediocre to average training, with

most of these lacking adequate and up-to-date facilities. Our country is fortunate enough to have

vast training facilities such as the Philippine Institute of Sports Complex and the Rizal Memorial

Sports Complex, yet through the years, they have not been well-maintained and are not updated

to at least be on the same level as other modern training facilities all over the world.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Lack of updated and modern facilities solely devoted to the training, development, and welfare

of both amateur and professional athletes.

The Rizal Memorial Sports Complex is the oldest national sports complex in the

Philippines, and is managed by the Philippine Sports Commission. The complex stands on the

former site of the Manila Carnival Grounds, and was first inaugurated in 1934 for the Far Eastern

Championship Games. The sports complex was designed by architect Juan Arellano and

showcases an Art Deco style. It was also used as a civic area during the Philippine

Commonwealth era and was the site wherein former president Manuel Quezon was declared one

of the presidential candidates in the 1935 elections. During the World War II, the complex was

destroyed but was reconstructed for use in the 1954 Asian Games, and was again renovated in

2011. It also currently houses the administrative office of the Philippine Sports Commission and

quarters for Philippine National Athletes. In April 2017, the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex

was declared as a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the
Philippines and an Important Cultural Property by the National Museum of the Philippines

ensuring the site’s preservation due to the National Cultural Heritage Act.

The study focuses on discovering all of the necessary facts and information regarding the

redevelopment of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex into a modernized and updated facility

that will cater to the needs of both amateur and professional athletes, without compromising its

historical and cultural significance.

These needs are not limited to the physical needs of the stakeholders but rather, branches out to

sports psychology, and how this could affect the mental and psychological well-being of the

athletes. The problem lies in the fact that the Philippines is behind on the technological advances

and facilities focused on the training and development of athletes. The facilities in current

training centers in the country are not up-to-date, and are not designed to aid in the development

of the athletes to their full potential and the utilization of their talents and skills. Therefore, this

could be a waste of opportunities for these athletes to hone their abilities, maximize their full

potential, and could bring honor to our country as professional athletes.

This project will therefore focus on the redevelopment of the Rizal Memorial Sports

Complex into a modern training center equipped with updated facilities catering to the needs of

Philippine athletes, yet still preserving the historical significance of the site.

1.3 Project Goal

To redevelop the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex into an updated and modernized training

facility for Philippine athletes.

Based on the UN sustainable developments goal promoting good health and well-being,

the goal of this project is to address the lack of advanced training opportunities provided for

athletes in the Philippines. This project aims to provide a means for updated training provision

for athletes, through the redevelopment of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex into a training

center that’s more equipped to administer the various needs of its stakeholders.

1.4 Project Objectives

 To focus on catering specifically to the needs of amateur or professional athletes in the

country, pertaining both their physical and mental health.

 To redevelop the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex into an updated training center

equipped with adequate facilities that would aid in the training and skill development of

the users, yet still preserving the site’s historical significance.

 To improve the current state of Philippine sports in general, through the development of a

state-of-the-art sports complex, equipped with up-to-date technologies and facilities.

1.5 Significance of the Project

Honing and developing the skills of Filipino athletes through the use of architecture, and

shedding light on various unconventional sports in the country.

Through this project, a more in-depth study could be conducted regarding not just the

physical, but the mental and psychological needs of athletes in the country. The study would not

only focus on garnering information focused on the required physical training and facilities for

athletes but rather, will also shed light on the sociology of sports itself. The data gathered
through conducting this research will be of great help in determining the factors needed in order

to redevelop an outdated sports complex equipped with all of the necessary facilities beneficial

for aspiring athletes. With the implementation of this project, the problem regarding the lack up-

to-date facilities supporting the needs of athletes shall be addressed, along with the country’s

lack of technological advancement.

 Significance in the industry

 The redevelopment shall introduce new facilities focused on sports science and research

development for athletes.

 It may pave a way for more of the younger generation to get into sports

 The redevelopment of the complex acknowledges its role in the history not only of sports

but also in other monumental events in the country, as well as one of the last surviving art

deco architectures designed by notable architect Juan Arellano.

 The Rizal Memorial Sports Complex witnessed the beginning of the careers of Olympic

medalists and notable Filipino athletes like Hidilyn Diaz, Lydia de Vega, Elma Muros,

and Robert Jaworski.

 Significance internationally

 A training center furnished with state-of-the-art equipment, technology, facilities, and

amenities will definitely result in the better performance of our athletes in the Olympics

or other international sports competitions

 By coming up with updated facilities through the redevelopment of the Rizal Memorial

Sports Complex, the country’s athletes and coaches will have a more decent home and

venue for elite training that is at par with international standards.

 An updated national sports complex may pave a way for international sporting events to

be held in the Philippines.

 Significance to the community

 The redevelopment of the complex preserves a huge portion of Philippine sports history.

 The Rizal Memorial Sports Complex was a public space designed for the people, and

truly belongs to the people of Manila.

 The complex must remain as a significant piece of our patrimony.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation

 The study shall revolve around gathering data pertaining to the physical needs and the

factors affecting the physical well-being of athletes, through the study of both the positive

and negative effects of sports to one’s health, which will aid in the development of a

sports science facility dedicated to monitoring the athletes’ physical health through

nutrition, physical rehabilitation, and advanced sports science techniques.

 The study shall also cover the necessary aspects that greatly influence the athletes’

mental and psychological state.

redevelop the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex into a modern and up-to-date training

facility.

 The research will also gather information regarding the appropriate ambiance and

environment needed for the facility, for the users to develop their skills efficiently.

 The study will cover the sociology behind sports in order to have a more in-depth

understanding of the various socio-cultural structures and patterns of groups involved

with sports.

 The study shall be limited to certain types of sports, most of which are well-known in the

country, yet incorporating a number of unconventional sports that need more exposure as

well.

 The research also includes various heritage conservation limitations involved in the

redevelopment of this historical sports complex.
