COURSE BULLETIN

Welcome to the 2016 short course on Statistical Methods using STATA!

This course is organized and conducted by the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of
the College of Public Health (CPH) of the University of the Philippines Manila.

To date, enlisted participants come from diverse professional and academic backgrounds with
inclination for data analysis in research.

Lectures and laboratory sessions will be given by resource persons from the Department of
Epidemiology and Biostatistics of CPH – University of the Philippines Manila.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants should be able:


1. To use the basic commands in STATA
2. To perform the following statistical analyses in STATA:
a. Numerical Data Analysis
b. Categorical Data Analysis
c. Linear Regression
d. Logistic Regression

Venue and Schedule

This three-day course will be held at Lara Hall, College of Public Health, University of the
Philippines Manila. Sessions are scheduled approximately 8 hours everyday, with one-hour
lunch break, and 15-minute coffee/tea breaks each in the morning and afternoon. The final
course schedule will be sent as a separate file thru e-mail.

For participants who are unfamiliar with the venue, inquiring from the organizing team for
instructions on how to reach the College of Public Health can be done. Briefly, the CPH is located
at 625 Pedro Gil Street, between the main building of the UP College of Medicine and Paz
Mendoza Hall. It is situated directly across University Tower (a condominium building). Other
landmarks include Jollibee, Lawson, and 7-Eleven.
Attendance

A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to participants who have attended at least 80% of
the lecture and laboratory sessions, and who have paid the registration fee. Participants who fail
to comply with the attendance requirement of the course will be given a Certificate of
Attendance.

Course Handouts

Electronic copies of session handouts can be accessed by participants through Google Drive at
the link that will be given shortly before the start of short course. The organizing team will
update this shared folder according to the availability of hand-outs from the resource persons.
Hard copies of session handouts will no longer be provided. Thus, it is emphasized that
participants are encouraged to bring with them their own laptop computers so they can access
e-copies of session handouts if they so desire.

Use of Personal Computers/Laptops

Due to the limited number of computer units with licensed STATA software in the statistical
computing laboratory of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, participants are
requested to bring their own laptop computers.

Installation of STATA

For participants who do not have STATA installed, you may download a 30-day evaluation copy
of STATA version 14. You may request it by filling up a request form in the following link:

We highly suggest that you download and install the evaluation copy prior to attendance to the
course.
