Referred to by many design engineers as the ideal replacement for the more commonly used
brushless DC (BLDC) motors are more frequently finding their way into an increasing number of areas as
medical, defence and engineering applications every year. Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are one of the
electrical drives that are rapidly gaining popularity, due to their high efficiency, good dynamic response,
more compact, low maintenance, high torque and low volume with accuracy and higher power density.
BLDC motors are used in industry appliances such as HVAC industry, medical, electric traction,
road vehicles, aircrafts, military equipment, hard disk drive, etc. Comparing BLDC motors with DC
motors, the motor have high starting torque capability, smooth speed control and the ability to control
their torque and flux easily and independently. To achieve desired level of performance the motor
requires suitable speed controllers. This work focuses on different control strategies and comparison for
BLDC motor (PMBLDC) drive, controlled by PID and IMC controllers. In case of permanent magnet
motors, usually speed control is achieved by using PID and IMC control strategies. Although
conventional these controllers are widely used in the industry due to their simple control structure and
ease of implementation, these controllers pose difficulties where there are some control complexity such
as nonlinearity, load disturbances and parametric variations.
In the proposed work, a speed controller has been designed by using two types of control
strategies first one addresses the PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) controller based on pole
placement technique and the second one address about the IMC (Internal Model Controller). The
controllers are for the PMBLDC motor drive simulated using MATLAB software package. The
simulation results are carried out for operation of the BLDC motor so that the motor runs much closed to
the reference speed. The performance parameters are compared for both the control strategies for speed
control of BLDC motor drive.
