Two Types of Rehabilitation Program in the Philippines
In-patient and Out-patient Program for Drug or Alcohol Addiction Victims
There are two types of rehabilitation programs accessible in the Philippines - in-patient rehabilitation (provided
by government and private residential facilities) and out-patient rehabilitation (presented by individual doctor,
clinic or hospital).
An in-patient rehab program requires the patient to stay at a residential facility during the rehabilitation process.
An in-patient rehab program usually lasts for six months or longer, depending on the condition of a patient. This
is very important for people who are already severely affected by alcohol or drug addiction and are not in
control of their condition. Government and private residential treatment centers in the Philippines charge
monthly fees to cover the patient’s everyday needs.
It is the willingness of the person to enter treatment or voluntary acceptance to withdraw from alcohol or drug
dependency in order to stay clean and be sober for the rest of his life that serves as the starting point of any
rehab program. The voluntary submission of an individual makes it easier to conduct in-patient rehab program.
In-patient rehab program is highly recommended for individuals who are at the later part of alcohol or drug
addiction because:
There are high-quality alcohol and drug rehabilitation facilities in the Philippines offering IN-PATIENT rehab
program. It is important to find the right in-patient program that is suitable for your loved ones. There are first
class rehab institutions available for those who can afford. They provide luxury accommodation, special therapy
programs, and the best possible atmosphere and environment for the patient. There are also government
facilities offering residential treatment for drug dependents and alcoholics which can help in the reformation and
recovery of a patient.
There are Christian rehab centers in the Philippines which are free-standing institutions and non-government
organizations that treat patients in a Christian life program - teaching them to make their spiritual faiths the
center of their lives, through bible studies, religious worships and spiritual development and counseling.
Part of the program is the preparation for normal lifestyle by assigning them to daily tasks such as kitchen work,
housekeeping, gardening, house repair and maintenance, laundry and livestock breeding. The main goal is to
prepare the individual and to develop his self worth when he returns home. Part of their program includes
physical fitness and recreational activities such as outdoor and indoor sports.
On the other hand, out-patient rehab program involves treatment within the facility during the day or clinic
hours. Treatments and programs of out-patient rehabilitation can also be extended at home as the need arises.
Out-patient rehabilitation programs are usually connected with free-standing hospitals and individual clinics. In
any case, professional medical treatments are implemented. OUT-PATIENT rehab center also provides
periodic schedule of counseling and family oriented programs that help in personal development. This is good
for people who are still in control and are mildly affected by the addiction. Patients who have completed a
program in a residential center can still sign up with the out-patient program. This is to ensure of a continuous
long term effects of the recovery process.
Some rehab institutions are offering out-patient programs for men and women who need treatment but cannot
afford in-patient / residential expenses. These institutions offer treatment to those dependents who are willing
to get well even if they are working professionals, students, or businessmen, etc. They can be treated
according to their schedules. This program is good for individuals who are in the early stage of addiction and
allow them to continue their professional career, schooling, and business activities while undergoing treatment.
Although it is much cheaper to avail treatment outside the rehabilitation institution which is the out-patient rehab
program, there are factors and barriers that interfere in the flow or process of the program intended for the
patient.
- It is understood that being an out-patient means no direct control and close supervision of the patient by the
treatment team. The patient only attends sessions during the day or an interval session.
- There is a tendency that the patient would still have access or "vice-versa" with his former group who can
influence him to go back to the addiction.
- There is no total recovery yet of the patient that the urge and cravings for drugs is still within the person.
- Drug pushers tend to persuade the person whom they knew was a former user to return to the usual
escapade.
When noticeable symptoms appear, the need for rehabilitation program is realized. Rehab programs differ in
every rehab center, but they have a common objective, "restoring someone” – bringing the person out from the
addiction. Drug addiction in the Philippines covers not only personal problems but also deals with the social
issues. Addiction primarily affects the person and the people around him, specially the family. That is why
family members should also be part of the rehab program and in the treatment process.
The minute the family members decided to intervene, they are taking part of the process of recovery. It is very
well understood that all the members of the family are connected and are affected when it comes to the
negative consequences of addiction.
An addiction is a psychological and physical illness that has been damaging lives since time immemorial. It is a
personal issue, at some point. That is why a problem drinker or a drug user, in many cases, never reveals his
true condition or avoids talking about his true feelings. Perhaps, they have no power to admit that they have a
problemwhen it comes to their addiction. Or in other cases, they are not aware about their conditions. These
individuals continue to abuse alcohol and drugs, little did they know that the addiction is slowly creating
damages to their lives. Family and friends should help and protect the person from relapse once he has
returned home.
Aftercare program should be integrated as well. The program of each rehab center focuses on the recovery,
healing and freedom of the addicted individual and family relationship as a whole. Family members have to
intervene when obvious changes in thinking and behaviors are seen. It is when this situation finally arises that
the need for a rehab program, in-patient or out-patient it may be, is absolutely necessary.
Alcohol and drug addiction is one of the biggest problems of the modern Filipino society not just because of the
huge number of people that fall victim to it but also because of its long-term effects on the lives of the addicts
as well as the people close to them. It does not matter where they get addicted – age-old addictions such as
drugs or alcohol (also known as substance addiction), or modern addictions such as computer games (or non-
substance addiction) – people who fall victim to the clutches of addiction all suffer the destructive effects of
whatever they are addicted in.
Fortunately, there are ways to treat this negative condition. Currently, rehabilitation is the most common and
effective form of getting people out of their addictions. In the Philippines, there are around 60 registered
rehabilitation centers(or “rehab” centers, as they are popularly called) and dozens more scattered across a
country that is home to more than 98 million Filipinos, which is quite concerning considering the percentage of
addiction cases in the country.
The concept of rehabilitation is simple, but its results are long-lasting and more effective than any other
scientific method of dealing with addiction issues. The rehabilitation tactics mostly involve psychological
conditioning, which in many modern studies have proven to be the most effective means of addiction treatment.
Rehab centers play a great role in helping addicts get back on their feet by using methods that gradually cause
them to cease their interest in whatever they are addicted in.
Alcohol and drug rehab centers also provide guidance when it comes to dealing with withdrawal symptoms,
which can be dangerous if not addressed accordingly. These symptoms occur when a dependent chooses to
abstain from drugs or alcohol that the body has been accustomed with. These physical and psychological
episodes can escalate dramatically and can cause serious health issues. Rehabilitation centers provide
medical treatments in coordination with a licensed physician of a legitimate hospital.
One of the main reasons why rehab centers are the most effective means of rehabilitating victims of addiction
is they provide an atmosphere of comfort and acceptance that addiction victims could not receive outside.
Normally, when a person becomes addicted, everyone else around that person starts seeing him or her
differently – most often negatively.
The depression felt by the victim as a result of being looked down upon plunges him or her further into the
depths of despair, causing that person to abandon all hope of rescue or treatment. Rehab centers prevent this
from happening by putting them into an environment where they will be encouraged to believe that there is still
hope. Afterwards, rehab centers provide alternative sources of enjoyment and fulfilment to divert the former
addict’s attention from what he/she used to be addicted to into something recreational and fulfilling. It is vital for
them to feel that they exist because they have a purpose in life.
Rehabilitation not only invigorates and empowers the victims of addiction to lose interest in the things they used
to be addicted to, but this treatment also enables the reconciliation of relationships between the victims of
addiction and their families. Rehab patients undergo programs that not only take away their addiction, but also
teach them how to cope with life and get back into society without the fear of being discriminated or
persecuted. Social stigma is one of the main causes of relapse when the patient leaves the facility. Rehab
centers teach recovering addicts and alcoholics life after rehab so that they can easily get their feet back into
the society they belong.
The Current Dilemma of Rehab Centers in the Philippines, and How It Can Be Resolved
With the remarkable success rate of rehab centers in treating cases of addiction, it is alarming to realize how
there are so few of these institutions in the country, and how only a few Filipinos actually turn to rehab centers
to treat their addiction issues.
Probably the most pressing reason is the extreme cases of poverty in the Philippines. A lot of people find rehab
centers expensive and less practical; most Filipinos would rather ignore the addiction issues of their family
members than spend money and send them to treatment facility where they would get real attention. This
mindset often leads to the worsening of addiction cases, resulting in bigger problems in the future. Moreover,
substance abuse related problems such as domestic violence, crimes on the street and illegal activities
increase affecting those people who are innocent.
It is essential for the Filipino people to realize how important rehab centers are in addressing the addiction
issues in our country. For this to happen, awareness campaigns can be started to inform and encourage
people to support rehabilitation institutes.
Rehabilitation is not an overnight solution; there is no scientific solution that would promise you quick results. If
it took drug dependents and alcoholics a long time to succumb to their addictions, it will take some time for
them to completely turn away from it. But there is one thing that rehab centers can guarantee – the procedures
used in these treatment institutions will ensure that the results are long-lasting and effective.

What Is Addiction?
Addiction is a condition that is causing a lot of problems in our society today and yet many Filipinos still
understand so little about what it is or what causes it. And while there are private and government institutions
such as drug and alcohol rehab centers that exist to deal with cases of addiction in the community, a great
portion of people that have fallen victim to addiction are still unreachable and are still suffering from the
disease. The role of the family and the society is essential to helping victims of addiction, and in order for us to
get involved; we need to first understand what addiction is. If we are familiar to what we are dealing with, we
could totally win over from it, no matter how difficult it is.
Addiction is defined as “a continued repetition of behavior despite its adverse consequences” by many
psychological experts and medical doctors. It is often viewed with negativity due to it being attributed to
prohibited substances, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, gambling, sex, internet or computer games. To put it simply,
addiction is a person’s intense longing or desire for something that creates in him or her endless hunger that no
matter how he or she tries to fill could never be satisfied.
Victims of addiction find themselves unable to control their passions, resulting in them constantly wanting to
satisfy this passion even if it has negative effects in their lives. This often escalates to the victim resorting to
any means - even violent ones - to get what he or she is addicted to, which greatly affects the people around
him or her. This seriousness of the effects of addiction is the reason why we need to understand more of it so
we can respond to its victims accordingly and help them get out of it.
The most important thing to understand about addiction is that it is a mental condition - in other words,
addiction is all about the individual’s mind. And while experts and psychologists have categorized various kinds
of addictions based on how they affect a person, when you dig deep into an individual’s condition, you can
always trace it back to something that has to do with his or her mind.
This is why a large percentage of rehabilitation programs constitute conditioning the individual’s mind -
whatever the mind believes, the body follows. Victims of addiction act the way they act because their mind has
been made to believe that without that thing that they are addicted in, they would not be able to live or function
properly.
Another important aspect to addiction that would greatly help to prevent it is the fact that addiction is not
something that a person acquires in a day - it is a result of an individual’s continued interaction with the object
of his or her addiction. Addiction, in other words, is a negative habit. A good example of this would be a victim
of drug addiction.
Drug addicts didn't become what they are today in just one take. It required them to continuously ingest the
drugs to the point that their body became tolerant to it, while their mind was being conditioned that they needed
the drugs. As time went on, their mind became subjected to the thought of needing the substance that it
subconsciously took control of their decisions on whether or not to take that substance. The drug intake soon
became a habit, which then led to the addiction.
Getting an individual free from addiction is not easy, because in many cases such as drug or alcohol
addictions, the body has gotten used to the substance that immediate abstinence may result in drug or alcohol
withdrawal symptoms, which is the body’s negative reaction from being deprived of the addictive substance.
This is the reason why in rehabilitating an addiction victim, the individual’s mentality must first be changed in
order for the transition to become smoother. In other words, the victim must first have the perspective that he or
she is being destroyed by the substance and must get rid of it.
There are many available help when it comes to fighting addiction. One option is entering an alcohol and drug
rehab center that has the goal of treating patients with addiction. A rehabilitation facility has the necessary tools
to help an individual get rid of his addiction and start a new life for his family and loved ones. While it is
essential for the person to possess strong motivation and self-control to win over addiction, rehab centers is the
avenue where all these values can prosper and develop.
