Answer all the questions

1.1 Define modulation index of amplitude modulation.

Modulation index of amplitude modulation is defined as the ratio of maximum

amplitude of modulating signal to the maximum amplitude of carrier signal. It is
denoted by μ and ranging between 0 and 1.

i.e Modulation index (μ) = Modulating signal amplitude (V m)/ Carrier signal
amplitude (Vc).

1.2 An amplitude modulation transmitter radiates 1000 watts of unmodulated power.

If the carrier is modulated simultaneously by two tones of 40% and 60%
respectively. Calculate the total power radiated.
Given Pc=1000W
µ1=40% =40/100=0.4
µ2=60% =60/100=0.6

µt= µ12+µ22 = 0.42+0.62 = 0.72

Pt=? WKT, Pt/Pc = 1+(µt2/2)

Pt = Pc (1+(µt2/2))
= 1000* (1+(0.52/2))
= 1260 W = 1.260 KW
1.3 Do the modulation techniques decide the antenna height?
Yes. Because the antenna height is depends on the wavelength of the wave.
Wavelength depends on its frequency of operation i.e Higher the frequency of
operation less will be the antenna height and vice-versa.

1.4 Sketch the AM wave for m=0.5. Also sketch its spectra.

1.5 A carrier wave of frequency 10 MHz and peak voltage 10V is amplitude
modulated by 5 KHz cosine wave of amplitude 6V. Determine the modulation
index and draw the amplitude spectrum.
