LO3 - Evaluation

Weekly blog updates are required, as with every unit. Please remember to

LO1 This learning objective was researching target
audiences
What have you been asked to do? For LO1 we have been asked to conduct thorough
research both primary and secondary into our target
audience. The age groups we had to find out about
were 10-18, 30-40 and 50-60. We were then make a
production of our chosen specialism which appeals to
all three of the age categories. The research would be
consisting of secondary internet research with
references.

We then had to summarise this secondary research

into infographics detailing the hobbies/interests, media
habits and personality traits of each group.

After this we needed to conduct primary research in the

form of both face to face interviews and also survey
sent out.
How has researching target By researching my target audience it has allowed me to

think. I researched their typical hobbies as well to gain
better understanding of what makes each age tick.

Another big thing to research was their buying habits

and their media consumtion.

By doing this it helped me understand what sort of

platform I should publish my production. Also what
devices each group uses the most. I can therefore
publish accordingly to make it appeal to all them.
How has analysing primary research By analysing primary research it has given me first hand
allowed you to understand the accounts of what each age group wants and expects
requirements of your target to see. This means that when it comes to planning my
audience? production I will know how to tweak it in oder to cater
for all three age categories.

The face to face interviews were recorded and

uploaded.

As well as this I created a survey of 1 questions and sent

it out a number of ways. By email to my college peers
and also on facebook and twitter in order for me to get
a suitable number of responses.
How has analysing secondary

By analysing my secondary research I have gained

How effective was your research? In my opinion I think that my research was conducted
well and was very informative. It really helped me
understand the target audience better and will help me
to plan and produce much more effectively. I think that
I could have collected some more responses for the
survey but otherwise I think it was effective research,
epecially my secondary research.
What problems did you encounter Some minor problems I faced included finding suitable
with the research process? people to interview who fell into the three age
categories. The main problem was getting people to
respond to the survey at first. It was difficult to get any
responses at all firstly but after a while of nagging
people eventually responded.
What have you done to overcome To overcome these issues I asked other members of my
these issues? family that fell into the age category that I needed
people to interview for. We had to workout times in
betwen my college and them working in order to
conduct them, but it worked out. For the survey I
uploaded to two different social medias which
gathered more responses, I also asked my mum to send
it round to her contact to get a wider range of ages
and not just 10-18 from my friends on social media.
How effectively did you
present your findings?
What will you implement into
your production from the
research undertaken?
In my opinion I think that my final infographics were
suitable and showed the general information that was
gathered during the research process. However I belive
that I could have taken some more time to make them
look better and also contain more imagery.
I will attempt to implement all that I have learnt from my
research into my final production. This includes what
each group wants and expects to see from a music
video. Both my primary and secondary research have
helped me to understand this.

What did you learn from your
planning?

What genres/formats have you
chosen and why?
From my planning I had to complete the usual things
that we do including a shooting script, production
schedule, crew list, props, equipment, conformations,
location recce etc. By doing this it has allowed me to
fully understand what I will be trying to produce. It will
make me more efficient when it comes down to filming
and editing.
This will all be useful because it will allow me to make
decisions quicker during the production process. It
means if something goes wrong then I will have back up
plans and wont become stuck and not be prepared do
make changes.
I have decided to use the hip-hop genre simply
because it is the most popular genre of music today
and 10-18 will enjoy it. To cater to the other two age
categories I have decided to do a more well known
hip-hop song which is See You Again by Wiz Khalifa. This
is because they are more likely to have heard the song
since it was very popular when it came out. I have
decided to do a mixture of performance and story/
narrative because researching showed me that people
like both formats.

Outside of lessons I completed some work whenit was
nesseccasy. I think however that when it comes to my
final major project I will definitely need to do more
ouside of lessons if I want to achieve that higher grade
that I am aiming for.
finding a suitable actor as well as a suitable car.
Because it was a funny take on a serious song I didnt
want just an ordinary car, I wanted something that
would stand out. Eventually I did find this so it wasnt a
major problem.
The filming process was good and the editing was fun
since this is my favourite part to do.
Some problems I faced during filming included my actor
for what he had to do. Luckily my backup actor was
with us at the time of shooting so he decided to just
strain the video. I was also able to keep the intended
car in which was good. Another problem I had was not
being able to book out a tripod and instead having to
resort to using the steadycam which was much less
effective at getting a smooth shot. Because of this my
production looked less professional than I intended
however next time I will be sure to book one as early as
possible.
I feel that my production was relatively good and
looked professional. As discussed before the shakey
camera was a problem. Apart from that however I think
I used a good wide range of shots which had good
continuity. The only thing that was noticeable was bad
lip syncing at times.
that in general it did meet all of the target audiences.
This was because of the song choice and the way it was
filmed. They thought it was inoffensive which was good
and it also made light of a serious topic. They said that
in order to improve I could have added more substance
to the story or had another actor mime the other lyrics in
the song. For my next production I will be looking to
improve on what was mentioned above.
