5. Presentation Title: Promoting research skills in undergraduate EFL teachers through Task-Based
Teaching
This presentation offers explanations about a research study I conducted to the effectiveness of Task-
Based Teaching to promote research skills in 20 undergraduate EFL teachers (11 males and 9 female) of
an EFL Program at a Public University in the southern Colombian region. The main aim was to implement
a series of ten research tasks oriented to broaden learners’ skills and knowledge in research. That was
done by implementing and developing theoretical-practical research tasks, which were conducted to
overcome the difficulties that students presented to define, formulate research objectives and
questions, review literature, and state the methodology of their research proposals. I utilized an action
research method and the information was collected through observation-field notes, semi-structured
interviews, and researcher-journals. The results suggest that the implementation of Task-Based Teaching
increased learners’ opportunities to acquire research abilities. They developed theoretical-practical
tasks, in which they were exposed to different learning experiences that helped then to develop skills in
defining, formulating research objectives and questions, reviewing literature, and stating research
methodologies. In conclusion, Task-Based Teaching offered a framework for the students to be engaged
in tasks that expanded expertise and experience to expand their capability in research.
Based on the above mentioned, the topic is appropriate in language teaching and learning because it will
provide undergraduate EFL teachers with a pedagogical model to expand their students experiences,
knowledge and awareness about the need to conduct research studies. Promoting Research skills
develop students’ knowledge and capability to provide students with the possibility to reflect upon their
future practice and learn how to look for scientific interpretation to the difficulties that education faces.
8. Objectives and Participant Outcomes
The study was proposed to:
promote research skills in undergraduate EFL teachers through Task-Based Teaching
design research assignments based on Task-based Teaching
implement the research tasks in Undergraduate EFL Teachers
ascertain the effectiveness of the research tasks to promote research skills in undergraduate EFL
teachers
In that order of ideas, the participants’ will first to realize how I conducted the study. Second, they will
know how to design, implement and evaluate tasks that are based on Task-based Teaching methodology.
Finally, they will have another possibility to promote research skills in undergraduate EFL teachers.
