On Holiday
IT’S easy for us to catch the holiday
vibes these days as we now reside
in the country and coastal town of
Waipu, where thousands of visitors
swell the population for a few weeks
over Xmas and new year period as this
issue goes to production. Our holiday
season kicked off with a Xmas parade
through the main street of Waipu and
this year we entered NZHRM’s deuce
coupe for the first time and took three
young local boys (ages 8-11) along
for the ride. To my amazement they
managed to squeeze all three torsos
out the window and were cheering
Merry Xmas to the crowds. I was blown
away with the turnout of people, the
crowds were huge this year and it
reminded me of a Sunday morning
cruise during Whangamata’s Beach
Hop. We dressed the young lads in
NZHRM 50th anniversary T-shirts for
the occasion and they enjoyed every
second of the 30-minute cruise through
town. Perhaps leaving an indelible mark
and impression on their psyches and
who knows what they’ll be driving in
the next 25 years? An electric motor
under the hood of a who-knows-
what! That aside, the experience was
unforgettable and we missed the big

post-parade session at the local pub
afterwards but will save that for next
Xmas, even though we’re non-drinkers
these days and live in perpetuity as
sober drivers. Oh well, there’s always
non-alcoholic beer, which hasn’t
really caught on here yet, but that’s
another story for another time.
Over the holiday break we were
treated to the fantastic discovery and
story of the new-New Zealand deuce
tudor which we cover in a 2-page
article in this issue.
It just goes to show
that no matter how
much we think we
know and how close
we think we are to
total saturation of old
cars, there’s always
another tucked away
somewhere, under our
radar and unknown.

voyage of discovery
out in the open for
all to share and we’re
mighty proud to
be presenting and
publishing stories like
this. Isn’t it flat out amazing how
much history is now coming to the
surface and after 50 years in the game
we’re still able to bring fresh and

Escaped or?
GREETINGS fellow rodders, Hope
your Xmas went well and this year is
even better. After the recent features
and articles on several 1936 Ford V8
coupes I went searching for other ones
which may have escaped or unknown
in our hot rod history. I found these
in my photo album taken at the ’92
Nats in Masterton and ’94 Nats in
Christchurch. What are their histories
and where are they now? Have they
ever been featured in NZ Hot Rod mag,
perhaps even in a build-up article.

Tudor Typo?
PAUL, I have been reading the Nov
issue of your magazine and in particular
the page 31 photo of Ivan Mendelson’s
‘32 tudor. This got me thinking about
Ivan Manderson of New Plymouth,
who died the same way. Perhaps
the first spelling is incorrect?

Neville Price’s Shelby Mustang GT500
³Land Speed Racing Comes To New Zealand
WITH the recent, official incorporation of Land Speed New Zealand Assn
this newly fledged organisation is well advanced to stage their initial
event on Goudies Road which is a forestry road in the Reporoa area on
the 10th Feb, 2018. It’s open to both street & competition, bikes and cars.

org.nz/events. Goudies Rd will be remembered by many as the site
used some years past where Owen Evans set the present NZ land speed
record in his highly modified Porsche despite suffering a tyre blowout
and subsequent crash while attempting to further increase the mark.
How to get there: Goudies Rd itself is easily located with Google maps and
is in the Broadlands Rd/Reporoa area between Taupo and Rotorua. It has a
5.8 km straight which is 7 metres wide, flat and paved in asphalt. It’s been
built to a high standard in anticipation of future logging truck use and has
only a 1% deviation throughout the entire 5.8 kms length. For spectators a
large parking area is provided courtesy of a local farmer. Some interested
parties have already inspected this particular section of road and given an
enthusiastic ‘thumbs up’ so it’s ideal for this inaugural meeting. This perfect
straight will give competitors a 2.5 km run-up to a flying ¼-mile followed
by a more than adequate 2.5 km shutdown length with timing handled by
a newly acquired set of Tag Heuer timing equipment. At the end of the day
entrants will receive a certificate showing their best run. Land Speed New
Zealand wants to make it clear that it is a totally independent organisation
not affiliated to any other sporting body and recorded speeds are only valid
within their own record book. LSNZA are more concerned about providing
an opportunity for competitors to test for ultimate top end performance of
their vehicle. One firm stipulation by the promoters for both competitors
and spectators alike: no alcohol or pets to the bought to the event.
As for this new organisation, most credit goes to their President Mr
John Seccombe who has worked tireless with assistance of several other
like minded professional people sharing the need for such an event. Now,
with all necessary permissions in place the event promises lots of big
performances based on both early interest and entries of some very exotic
cars and motorcycles including enquiry from overseas. This is certainly
an event with a promising future considering the rising support of similar
events staged in the USA like the Texas Mile run over a relatively short
standing mile where speeds in excess of 270 mph have been recorded.

 ³1934 Ford Roadsters – Follow up #1
OURR 10-page, in-depth article on the Henry Ford
1934 roadsters here in NZ sparked much positive
feedback and some new information as well.
Longtime hot rodder Neville Sharpe sent us this
cool old shot of a ‘34 roadster parked in Paihia Rd
One Tree Hill in1956 along with his memories of it.

I bought this white ‘34 roadster off Garth Souness in 1956. I recall he had it
stored in a garage in Ring Tce, Ponsonby. The Ferabend brothers got it mobile
for me at their homestead in Station Rd, Penrose and John Ohlsen did all the
panelwork on it when working at Harkins Brothers in Penrose. I sold it and last
saw it being driven up Oranga Ave with a few blokes cruising in it and never
saw it again. It’s a bit of a mystery where it disappeared to. Neville Sharpe.
Which of the five 1934 Ford roadsters we published pictures of
is this? There are a couple of possible options/scenarios.
A ’34 Ford roadster was 1. It reminded us of the John Ohlsen Flashback story we published in our
John’s first rod circa 1957. January 2015 issue which shows John’s own 1934 Ford roadster. It was around
this time in ’57 –’58 when John converted a stock 34’ Ford roadster into a
hot rod which he chopped and channelled to three inches off the ground.
These early photos from the Ohlsen family collection show a ’34 roadster
body painted white? Is it the same car previously owned by Neville Sharpe?

2. Another possible option we considered is that Neville Sharpe’s 1934

Ford roadster was/is the same car bought by Kevin McGreal in the late
fifties? Certainly the timing and location match. A call to Kevin confirmed
the colour of the car he bought was cream but when we explained the
possible link, Kevin recalled his car was purchased from a Dutchman
in Puhinui Rd and that it was in a shed falling down around the car. The
car had been sitting for many, many years and was dead stock original,
even complete with original side curtains and rod brakes. And just
like in Sherlock Holmes, we conclude: It’s highly unlikely that Neville
Sharpe’s roadster is the Kevin McGreal/Jim Hanham roadster but is
most likely the John Ohlsen car as outlined in our option 1 above.
Radical in ‘58! John’s’34 Ford roadster got channelled to the max and fitted
with a deuce grille! It sat a mere three inches off the ground! Spot those tyre
rub marks on the upper-rear swage – testament to some hard cornering?

 ³13th Annual Tauranga Toy Run.

The Tauranga Toy Run is always held on the first Friday night in December
and 2017 was the 13th year that these people have organized the event.
This year 260 cars met at Bay Park and cruised through Papamoa and
Mount Maunganui finishing up at Fraser Cove in Tauranga. Two cars
were filled up with new toys which will be given to the Child Cancer
Foundation and monetary donations will go to Waipuna Hospice. L-R:

Stitch Richardson’s 1934 Ford Cabriolet

ABOUT a year ago I went to Keri Keri to take some

photos of “Stitch’s” 1939 Ford pickup. While I
was there I spotted his latest project, a 1934 Ford
cabriolet and recently took the opportunity to
come back and feature the finished product.
1934 Ford cabriolets are rare cars and differ
from their roadster siblings by having the added
feature of wind-up windows for the important
advantage of complete wet/cold-weather comfort,
yet they still retain the magical top-down, open
air freedom for driving on those blue sky days.
Stitch purchased the car as a partially built project (in
pieces) from Richard Disken. The car is a right-hand drive
Henry Ford car originally sold in Argentina, then privately
imported to NZ. When purchased by Stitch it was 90%
complete leaving only a few reproduction trinkets to
buy to be able to build it as a fully fendered resto-rod.
It was purchased just over two years ago and needed
much massaging to build it the way Stitch wanted it.
The frame is a solid Kiwi Konnection item and utilises
a Heidt’s independent front end and a Heidt’s rear
9” Ford with ladder bars and coil-over shocks. Anti-
roll bars are also incorporated front and rear with an
aftermarket Moser centre section. The brakes are now
Wilwood discs all round, activated by a dual circuit
Corvette master cylinder. Stitch would like to thank
Tony Cardwell from Cardwell Race Supplies for all his
invaluable expertise in sorting out his brake problems.

 A pioneer of our sport (Stitch) wanted the car to look
understated so hence the outside finish of the car is very subtle
painted black, looking all original and even the solid wheels by
Vintique are painted body colour. The sizes of these are 15”x6”
with 205x65-15” and the rears are 15”x8” with 235x70-15”.
Underneath the stock hood is a 2001 LS1 Corvette
engine and due to a lack of room he decided to run an
Edelbrock intake manifold and matching Edelbrock
4-barrel carburettor. Backed up to this is a 4L60E electronic
overdrive automatic. This trans has a TCI computer
fitted which enables the driver to choose various drive
functions and of course it’s operated by a Lokar shifter.
The car runs all the original parts including the tail lights
and bumpers. Stitch had a boat builder mate, Brian (BC) who
did a magnificent job of creating the laminated hood bows.
Abacus upholstery in Whangarei fitted the perfect
looking roof over the bows and sorted out the already-
started interior in black with red inserts. The Ididit column
attaches to the dashboard which holds a set of VDO gauges.
If you look just above the windshield there is a set of tiny
Mighty Wipers which Stitch is more than impressed with.
Now the end of the project build has arrived and Stitch
is very happy with the car and is just fine tuning the ride
quality by trying out different coil spring rates. There
is one more person he would like to thank and that
is Whangarei certifier Shane Speight at Mechtec who
gave him great help throughout the whole process.

Kiwi Deuce Tudors follow-up by Craig Stare

OUT of the blue after we ran the 1932

tudors in NZ article, we did a follow-up
and virtually found all the missing cars
and I think there are still a few out there,
and if you know something or have new
information please let us know. One
picture in the follow-up article Dec ‘17
was a very tidy two-tone grey one sent
in by Merv McBride which had been
owned by one of his relatives. There
was a good possibility that it could still

have still been in the Timaru area.
Just before Xmas I got a call from a guy
in Invercargill who seemed to know a
lot about that tudor. He told me he knew
where it was and it was safe and sound
in very good order but had a blown
head gasket. Finally and after much
discussion he confessed to owning it.
While I was down at the Southland
Rodders 50th anniversary in Invercargill
I mentioned to Allan Brookland the
interesting phone call I got and was not
sure if it was for real. Before I could
finish the story he said “oh that will be
Terry XXXX” just down the road and if I
wanted he could go take some photos of
it for me! How fortuitous? We were told
it was discovered in a shed down the
main street of Temuka several years ago.
On my way home from the Southland
anniversary event I called into Brian
King’s place for a coffee and I joked

with him and told him about the
crazy story I’d been told and ribbed
him about not knowing about the car
since he lives in Timaru.”Oh yeah,
known about that car for years, forgot
all about it, probably ‘coz it wasn’t a
Chev” and laughed. He told me the guy
with a local car sales on Temuka’s main
street had owned it since the sixties.
We decided it should be a follow-
up story of a follow-up story for the
magazine and sent Brian down to
interview the deuces long-time (and
now previous) owner Kevin Malone.
It turns out that Kevin and his mate
Trevor worked together at the Temuka
milk factory. Ironically they purchased
it from Ernie Sprague (around 1967-ish)
who had a car sales yard in Timaru for
a very long time. Apparently one of his
sons wanted the car but Temuka boys

Kevin and Trevor had a pocketful of
money so they went halves and bought
it. The original photo with caravan
was taken at the Waimate camping
ground in 1960, and the last registration
was 52 years ago in 1965/66.
The boys drove it everywhere on
their days off; up to Christchurch,
around town and even up the stop-
banks with a few flagons of beer and a
spot of hunting on the side. Eventually
Trevor wanted out so he sold his
half of the deuce’s ownership for 70
pounds, the original purchase price.
Unfortunately around ‘69/70 the head
gasket blew on the old 4 cylinder
and it was put away in a shed, then
moved to another shed at the car sales
location in the main street of Temuka.
It stayed there for nearly fifty years.
The odd person knew about it and
enquired but it was never for sale. One
day somebody came in and offered
$25,000 for it and Kevin almost fell
over backwards. There was another
guy, Terry XXXX who’d seen it
several times and had first refusal
after stumbling across the car years
earlier. But his perseverance paid off
in the end he ended up with the car
and was it was him who cautiously
called me. But where do you find such
a great original deuce? He certainly
didn’t steal the new NZ car which
is so perfect. Terry water blasted it
and a lot of the grey paint fell off
revealing its original unsanded dark
green, and I’m sure there would be a
way to complete this process without
destroying the original paint: that
stuff was bullet proof. Terry did not
want his surname published here and
kindly allowed us to print the story
and incredible photos which Allan
Brookland took for us to share.

a roaring success with over 400 cars,
plus bikes and caravans on display.
The Christchurch suburb of New
Brighton benefits greatly from this
event, which started with a Friday night
cruise from Bishopdale to New Brighton,
with many shops, bars and eateries
staying open late into the evening.
Saturday’s big car show had 8500
punters coming thru’ the gates at
Rawhiti Domain, and other attractions
included live music, retro beauty
contests, drag racing (men in dresses),
air brush demos, a helicopter simulator,
rock ‘n roll dancing displays, kids’
entertainment and dozens of market

31st Goodguys West Coast Nationals

PLEASANTON is one of those laid-
back places where everything seems
to fit into place and a perfect spot to
drive a hot rod. If there was one event
where you could go to see the best of
the best then this is it and this year’s
event marked the 31st anniversary
of what has become a keystone in
the American hot rod event calendar
and the crown jewel in Good-Guys
calendar. Hot rodders responded in
droves with numbers up on last year
with 3,500 vehicles registered. Acres
of top class show cars of all makes,
models and colours sparkled on
display in the California sun for three
full days. Shining brightest of all was
Buddy Jordan’s “Renaissance Roadster’
by Steve’s Auto Restorations which
was crowned America’s Most Beautiful
Street Rod and now becomes one of
Goodguys Top 12 Cars of the Year.
The swapmeet area had many cool items
for sale and down in the cars for sale
arena there were plenty of options for all
tastes on offer. At Sunday’s prizegiving
over 75 awards were presented to
well deserved winners so be sure
check them in our photo coverage.
The 31st West Coast Nationals
burned bright and made it one to
remember. Set your calendars for
August 24-26 the 32nd annual
“Crown Jewel!” See you then!

A FEW days with West Coast pinstriper
Gonk proved to be a great break,
in a part of the country with rich
history, the South Island’s West Coast,
where the people appear to be as
resilient and tough as the unforgiving
landscape, in an area which has seen
its fair share of mining disasters,
fishing tragedies, extreme weather,
the occasional tornado. Scattered
around the small towns surrounding
Greymouth are many pieces of rusted
mining machinery serving retirement
as garden art, and every small town has
many interesting stories to tell. Gonk
would make an excellent tour guide.
He knows these stories intimately.

THIS is the first time I’ve been able

to make this iconic event. For a first
time user I was impressed, it kind of
reminded of the first “blowouts” which
took place in the alleyway of North
Shore’s clubrooms. Very simple, nothing
organised as such, but nothing missing. Nick Smith had the only lowrider in attendance

cars are allowed to attend, yet 99% of
them are a perfect fit, the right cars
and the right people. I was there early
and the place was full, the late comers
were sprinkled everywhere. No exotic
food and it wasn’t needed, it was a kiwi
style “sausage” type of party anyway.
Unfortunately the beer dispenser had
its fair share of problems but there was
certainly nothing wrong with the plum
cider that I could see, or rather taste.
Rocket graciously gave us food, drink,
cool project cars and a truckload of
atmosphere. I guess it could have
been the best understated party of the
year. Well done Dan and his team.

NORTH Shore R&CC’s Toy Run was
well supported with over 300 hot
rodders and street machiners from
turning out in force at the St Heliers
domain right by the beach. The
weather was perfect and made for
a great event with the sun shining
and the harbour sparking in the
background: a perfect backdrop
for a late evening get together to
support the children of Auckland.
The high number of entrants meant
a big toy haul which is an excellent
outcome for Ronald McDonald
House Charities who benefit
directly from rodder’s goodwill.
North Shore R&CC appreciate the
attendance made by all and for putting
the event on their hot rod calendar.

 Underneath the die-straight exterior
skin a custom firewall and floor are less
noticeable but are essential components
and reflect the fastidious attention
to detail which went into creating
an outstanding automobile. Critical
thinking and analysis even went down
to ensuring the look of the floorpan
was great when viewed from both
above and below. Another subtle move
was to mini-tub the rear by removing
the original inner fenders and using a
new set of inner fenders which were
pre-widened. The end result retains
the factory appearance yet allows the
installation of the awesome 20”x12”
rear wheels. Custom-made trunk
floor is outstanding and side panels
make provision for leather upholstery
to carry through from the interior.
The effect of the often forgotten and
neglected trunk area is jaw-dropping
and once again is testament to
David’s vision and upholsterer Chris
Bakker’s input into the final look.

class custom seating and interior.
No stone has been left unturned
in terms of detail and quality. The
combination of camel and butterscotch
contrasts perfectly and complements
the exterior House of Kolor True
Blue paint. The original bench seats
were deep-sixed in favour of a pair of
Monaro buckets and a custom centre
console was fabricated and fitted
which is very tastefully executed.
The overall package has been
extremely well thought out. The
engine, paint and interior combination
all work together to deliver one of the
world’s coolest and most stunning
rides, dripping in quality workmanship
and pushing the boundaries with
innovation, design and fabrication.
The car was debuted at Australia’s
MotorEx Show in 2012 where it won a
Top Paint award up against some of the
best cars ever shown in the southern
hemisphere. Later it went on to win
People’s Choice at Harrigan’s Rod
& Custom Show on the Gold Coast,
testament to its impeccable pedigree.
But this fine ’57 Chevrolet’s journey
didn’t end in Australia. Owners David
and Katrina Martin put the car up for
sale and it was spotted by Kiwi Ross
Tebbs who fell in love with it and
it’s now is the star of his collection
residing here in New Zealand in his
new purpose-built garage. It debuted
here in NZ at the Speedshow in July
’17 and took home second place in
Street Machine honours just pipped by
a point in a tight three-way showdown
against world-class competition.
We had the ultimate pleasure in driving
this car to and from the magazine
photoshoot and were mightily impressed
with its road manners and overall
driveability. We are blessed to be able to
see and hear this show ‘n go Chevrolet
on Kiwi roads so keep an eye out for it,

Southland Rodders
50th Anniversary

IN 1976 I entered one of my first rod
runs, it was run by Southland Rodders
and I entered in my primered ‘34 Ford
pickup. Forty one years later I came
back to help celebrate their 50th
anniversary and to apologise! It was
great to see some of the originals at the
event even if only for a night or two.
Just over fifty cars were in attendance
and as we don’t often get to Invercargill
there is always something new to see.
The highlight for most was Alan Sadler’s
chopped 1949 Ford which started
its amazing life as a 4-door sedan.
Friday afternoon saw a lot of catching
up and registration. Saturday morning
was showtime with all the rods on

display at the local covered car park.
After the show there was a short drive
out to Milton for lunch. We checked
out some sheds on the way back for the
optional tour of Transport World. It was
here we had dinner later in the evening.
Sunday saw the run go to Stewart
Quertier’s sheds: the flathead
Kingdom in Gore. Lots of rare speed
equipment and some rare Fords, in
fact one which was brand new. On
the way to Riversdale pub for lunch
the weather packed it in so we were
on “house arrest” or should we say
“pub arrest” with endless food, beers
and even a junk shop next door!
From here, and in fact just around
the corner was Gil Kay’s amazing car
collection where there was something
for everybody: V8 coupes, hot rods,
Falcons, Valiants and even a Willys.
From here on in the weather even
came right. Prizegiving and dinner
were held back at the Ascot hotel.
Well done for a great week end.

NOT that long ago, we took a good look at

MSD’s entry level Atomic EFI. In that article
we noted that it fitted the needs of many
hot rodders because it directly addressed
the technical complexity of aftermarket
EFI. The folks from MSD also addressed
the cost issues with a little guy friendly
price point. And finally, they resolved the
need for a laptop. As it turns out, MSD
isn’t alone when it comes to user-friendly
EFI systems. Sister company Holley has
recently reworked and reconfigured their
Terminator EFI systems – they’re named
“Stealth” and for good reason: Holley
managed to package the throttle body
system inside a package which looks
suspiciously like a good old fashioned
4150 carburettor (check out the photos!). One of the coolest parts of Holley’s Stealth EFI has to be the throttle body. At first glance, it looks like
a well-prepped 4150 race carburettor.

On the outside, fuel is delivered to the pseudo
bowls, just like in a common high performance
4150 Holley. The fuel inlet fittings are -6 AN.
BELOW: Again at first glance, the bottom of the
throttle body looks a lot like a conventional Holley
carburettor. But there are tons of differences.
More in the next photo:
Fuel is discharged into the airstream through these annular
discharge orifices which encircle each throttle bore.
That air entry profile you see here was actually
crafted for NASCAR. When they switched to EFI,
Holley became the major supplier. They came up
with the flowed entry and it’s also used here in
the Stealth (which, by the way has a CFM rating
of 950).
Here’s how Holley describes
the new system: “If you want the
benefits of fuel injection but you
don’t want to give up the classic look
of carburettors, Holley gives you
the best of both worlds with their
new Terminator Stealth EFI line-up.
With the stealth system, you get the
same great features found in the
Terminator EFI, but with the looks of
a Holley carburettor. The Stealth EFI
incorporates four 80 pound-per-hour
injectors which is ideal for engines
producing 250-600 HP. The Stealth
uses a Holley 4150 style mounting
flange which makes the swap from
carburettor to EFI super easy.”
But let’s back up a bit: The throttle
body for the Stealth is all new, but it’s
based upon the architecture of the
original Terminator. That Terminator
throttle body takes engineering cues
from the Holley-engineered system
NASCAR is mandating on current Cup
Cars (in particular, it incorporates
the same air entry and venturi area).
The Stealth throttle body flows a
considerable 950-cfm. Aside from
the uber-cool look of the Stealth, a
big leap forward here is the way fuel
is distributed. If you look closely
at the photos you’ll note a series of
annular discharge orifices machined
downstream of the four throttle
plates. With those rings, there is more
fuel flow coupled with the fact they
provide superior fuel atomisation,
eliminating the fuel delivery issues
found in many outdated designs.
That’s not the only neat feature of
the throttle body. Holley has managed
to mount the four 80 lb/hr injectors
(@ 43 PSI) inside the pair of “bowls”.
There’s a throttle position sensor
mounted where you’d normally find
a carburettor choke. At the back of
the throttle body Holley has included
a large full vacuum port for power
brakes (the same as found in many
Holley carburettors). The “baseplate”
also has a pair of additional vacuum
ports – one at the back for full
manifold vacuum and another on
the right hand side for timed spark.
On the left (driver) side, the throttle
body has a conventional Holley-style
throttle arm, complete with locations
for the throttle (cable or lever) along
with a conventional return spring.
For GM (powertrain) applications, the

to the rear “carb” stud) are included
for both automatic and stick shift
combinations (including many Fords).
The throttle body bolts down just
like a regular carb, and new studs and
a base gasket are included. Upstairs, it
accepts a conventional air cleaner stud
and you can use any common 4150 air
cleaner, including drop base examples
(an air cleaner gasket is included too).
Each of the “bowls” is fitted with a male
AN fitting. Holley includes a dual-feed
style fuel line for the throttle body.
Holley offers several different
versions of the Stealth – complete with
everything you need for installation
(Master Kits) or without fuel delivery
components (Standard Kits). You
can get a kit designed to control an
electronic transmission (GM 4L80E or
4L60E) or you can order a kit which
doesn’t have transmission control (for

example, a stick or a something with a
conventional automatic). In addition,
you have a choice of finishes on the
throttle body: polished, hard core grey
anodised or gold dichromate. Whew!
All bases are pretty much covered!
The brains of this system (the ECU or
“computer”) isn’t exactly entry level.
Holley has what might be the toughest
ECU on the marketplace (with a robust
cast aluminium body), but it’s also easily
upgraded (we’ll get to that in a bit). And
it’s also incredibly “smart”. What it does
is “self learn”. The self-learning part of
Holley’s Stealth EFI operates by way of
feedback received from a wide-band
oxygen sensor situated in the exhaust
system (header collector). The sensor
samples the exhaust gas and determines
the amount of oxygen found in it. Then
the ECU calculates the required air/fuel
ratio from those samples. Essentially,
the ECU tells the injector how much
fuel to supply for a given situation. And
all of this happens instantaneously.
With this system, you don’t need a
laptop or any computer skills and you
don’t have to program the system.
Here’s the basic throttle lever setup. It has locations
for the throttle (cable or lever) along with a
conventional return spring. For GM applications,
the throttle arm has positions to operate Turbo 350,
700R4 and 2004R kick-down linkages.
Holley includes a handheld control
device for setup and it functions by
way of a touch screen. The 3.5-inch
handheld utilises a touch screen
display. All navigation is done through
“touching” an icon or button on the
screen. It couldn’t get easier! Here is
an overview of the different types of
adjustment screens which are used in
the display, and that may be utilised
when tuning or making selections:
The “Home Screen” has four
selections: Tuning, Monitor, File and
Wizards. According to Holley: “Tuning
allows for various parameters to be
easily adjusted. Monitor provides a
variety of gauge and dash displays.
File is for saving and loading files.
It also shows information about the
ECU and the handheld controller.
Wizard creates a base calibration and
performs the TPS Autoset function.”
We’ll dig into the steps required for
the Wizard and TPS Autoset in the
sidebar (they’re certainly not difficult),
but first what about the upgrade
capability found in the Stealth system?
With the Stealth EFI system, if you

want to fine tune or customise the
calibration of the engine, the ECU
can be upgraded, which allows for
lap top control. It doesn’t cost a cent
either. The download is free (direct
from the Holley Website) and it also
allows you to use the ECU in LSX,
boosted, or nitrous applications. Stealth
EFI is also available with an optional
transmission control kit for a GM
4L80E or a GM 4L60E transmission.
Two things you have to do before
firing up the car is to rework the fuel
system and add a bung for the O2 sensor
in a header collector or an exhaust

down pipe. A big part of the Stealth
“intelligence” is the wide band oxygen
sensor. As noted earlier, it’s the key for
self-learning. Essentially, Stealth EFI
tunes as you drive, maximising the
fuel economy and power from your
engine. A cool part about the Stealth
package is the way the O2 sensor is
mounted. While it’s very possible to
weld a bung into a header collector
(or exhaust system downpipe) where
all cylinders on the bank converge, it
can also be bolted in. When drilling
the hole for the sensor, Holley notes
there must at least 18-inches of exhaust

has catalytic converters, the oxygen
sensor must be located between the
engine and the catalytic converters.
Additionally, the sensor hole should
be mounted at an angle. This will help
prevent condensation in the exhaust
tubing from entering the sensor. The
sensor can be mounted on either
side of the collector or down tube.
As we stated above, you can weld in
the supplied weld ring or you can
bolt it in using the supplied clamps.
That’s a wrap for this issue. Next

ALLCOMERS saloon motor racing in
New Zealand was a great sixties icon
which enabled you to race basically
anything around the majority of our
race tracks. Pre war coupes with big
engines were knocking it out along side
V8 Zephyrs, Cortinas and Anglias. There
were several of these old coupes that
became very famous with the likes of
Ron Silvester’s Corvette powered 1938
Chev coupe in the south (still making
regular guest racing appearances) and
in the North the car that made the
impact was Red Dawson’s Willys coupe.
It was very successful and retired
from racing at the end of the ‘64/65
season. The car was sold to Lyn
Neilson who owned Fairmont motor
court in Dunedin where the engine
was removed and transplanted into
a Mk3 Zephyr race car. The rolling
body was sold to Joe Madsen (Weirdos
T-shirts in Christchurch). Nothing
happened to it and was on sold to a
Mr Heaton. Nothing much was done
to it then either and he eventually
advertised it in the Christchurch Star
newspaper and was purchased for the
princely sum of $30 by Neil Johnson.
Neil was a nice car, a little eccentric
around the edges and a certified Willys
nut. To find out more on how the
collection came about and how Harry
bought it go back to “TWIST OF FATE”
NZHRM Oct 2015 pages 20-23. Harry
bought the entire collection of 12 cars
including a very rare 1933 Willys.
Most race cars would have ended their
lives right there, but Harry had a plan.
If it had not been for the fact that Neil
Johnson was a hoarder in a bizarre way
it still existed for another eccentric car
nut to rebuild it. 42 years in storage,
all outside had done the car no favours
and was very rusty in the seventies.
Harry took one of the sedans that
have the same floor pan and cut it
through the front pillars giving him a
rust-free cowl, firewall, dash and entire
floor. The rebuild took just 5 months
with the intention of racing it at the
Leadfoot festival which he achieved.
Harry also wanted to keep as much
as he could of the original pain and
touched it up with a new brush in a
similar colour. Most of the engineering
was redone Harry as it was looking
like a ‘slice of agricultural history’
and a lot of it was rusted through. The
intention was always to race the car
again and it had to be safe but still be
as accurate as possible to the original.
The car consists of a 4-bolt 327
Chev with forged pistons and Carrillo
rods, a roller hydraulic cam topped
off by genuine 1958 Corvette twin
four manifold and a pair of rebuilt
WAFB Carter 4 barrel carbs.. A super
T10 4-speed goes through to a 1939
flathead rear end of 4.11 this is hoped
to change to a higher ratio of around
3.75 soon. There is also a set of tramp
rods under the diff and
a sway bar in front with
heavier duty early V8 stub
axles enabling the use ‘wide
five; bolt pattern V8 wheels.

built by Ben Johnson which shows a
lot of original shots of Red’s car racing.
In the month of November Harry is
racing the coup in five different events
including, dirt track, paddock racing,
a hill climb and a vintage circuit meet
at Ruapuna. If it was not for people like
Harry with impossible dreams none
of these projects would see the light
of day and there were plenty of great
cars dumped in the past as deemed
impossible to fix . Great effort Harry

Marineland’s 50th
Anniversary

AFTER an uneventful 13 hours flight
from Houston my wife Sally and myself
arrived in Auckland then onto Napier.
On Friday night we made our way to
the clubrooms of Marineland Street
Rod & Kustom Klub, the first time for
me as I have now been residing for
the past 30 years in Meridian, Texas.
They say first impressions are the most
lasting and seeing the clubrooms and
the progress of the club over the last 50
years was nothing less than impressive.
We met up with Phil Brenchley and
his delightful wife Gail and from there
introduced ourselves about the room
full of members. To my surprise several
of the original founding clubmembers

had made the effort to be part of the
50th anniversary celebrations coming
from Australia was Keith Kite. Canada,
John Oliver. Texas, Phil Stimpson and
myself. Other founding members I
had not seen in 40 plus years were
Murray Kite, Barry Swayn and it was
particularly great to see and catch up
with our very first president Jeffery
Lynn. So many faces and so many
names. My wife Sally quickly made
friends with several members wives,
Geoff Mitford Taylor’s wife Virginia
had lots in common, slinging mud as
potters do! Friday night came to the
end of catch-up lies and great memories
made back in those early days.
Saturday: Day two’s schedule was the
main celebration night and included,

president Jeffery Lynn made comments
of the early days and the changes
he’d seen transpire over 50 years.

made this all possible as without a start

Sunday: What a start to day three! A
special moment when we were picked
up at our door in a Dodge R/T. We all
assembled at the clubrooms for a short
run around Napier. What a amazing
sight 50 + cars all lined up some hadn’t
seen daylight for several years. All
were there to take part in the last day
of this monumental 50th anniversary.
The drive included stopping a several
points of interest, driving past old club
rooms along with stops at members
rod shops. These stops included Geoff Donne Griffiths, founding member presented
Mitford-Taylor’s well laid out shop the club with the first Klub plaque which he
hand-carved 50 years ago, together with
a remaining hand-made trophy from first

of us possibly will not cross paths
again, but have lasting memories of a
great group of hot rodders who came

eevent of NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series had over
fifty fuel cars vying for a place in eliminations.

The weekend had its highs and lows with the
low being the untimely death of Wichita, Kansas
AA/FA driver, Brett Henry whose Iron Mistress
’23 Ford crashed at the top end on Saturday. The
highs came as National Champions were crowned
after some close racing and a stunning event
win for England’s AAFA driver Nick Davies and
crew chief Rob Loaring who took the British built
Havoc ’32 Bantam home with a deserved trophy
beating the Americans at their own game.
Efforts were made to correct the upsets of last
year’s CHRR, there were cackle cars being
fired up down the old fire-up road next to an
appreciative crowd and the cars were all lined
up on track as usual. There was however not as
many as in past years but the display was well
appreciated by the large international crowd.

Nostalgia Funny Carr witnessed a massive thirty entries with the Heritage
Championship going to Canada’s Ryan Hodgson in the Pacemaker ’69 Camaro
when Jason Rupert failed to qualify, Hodgson lost to event winner Bobby Cottrell
in the semis. Cottrell driving the Austin/O’Brien Bardahl backed ’69 Camaro ran a
5.670/253 to take out Matt Bynum’s close 5.744/258 for the event win. RG.
AA/Fuel Altered saw a thirteen car entry led by Vince Generaleo driving the Nanook
’23 Ford with a 6.125/221 that was just ahead of England’s Nick Davies in the Havoc
’32 Bantam on a 6.135/232. Three qualifiers were held and the top two faced off. It
was well worth the five and a half thousand mile journey by the Brits to run the series
when a holeshot then a charge from behind gave Davies the all important event win, a
6.117/231 beat Generaleo’s 6.136/232. RG.
7.0 Pro had the 7.002/188 from Bobby Cottrell in his dragster sit on
top of qualifying but he went out in round one. The winner was Pete
Peterson in a ’48 Topolino, his 7.054/186 took the light beating Eily
Stafford’s breakout 6.964/190 in the dragster. RG.

> 10-22 Bangers to Bluff. It’s on again!! The 2018
dates for the annual Bangers to Bluff car rally have been
announced and team entries are now being called for. Up
to 15 “old banger” cars will leave Auckland on the 10th
of April 2018 and spend the next 12 days driving “roads
less travelled” all the way to Invercargill where they will
be auctioned off to raise funds for charity. Bangers to
Bluff has been run by the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay
for the last 3 years with steady growth each year as its
popularity increases. So far, Bangers to Bluff has raised
$85,000 for charity, and the masthead charities for 2018
are: Hopeworks Foundation – providing information and
support for those dealing with brain injuries. Plus Multiple
Sclerosis New Zealand – working to reduce the burden
of MS on those diagnosed, their carers and families. The
route will cover approximately 2,500kms of some of New
Zealand’s best and most scenic roads, including the North
Island’s Forgotten World Highway and the South Island’s
Haast and Arthur’s passes. The main goals are to raise
funds and awareness for the charities, while having loads
of fun and travelling our great country. The rally is not a
driving competition; it is a fun, friendly event with points
awarded for challenges along the way and a trophy is
awarded at the end. The organizing committee are now
looking for participants for the 2018 event. Participation
can be in the form of entering a team and vehicle to go
on the rally, or through sponsorship and/or donations. If

Laguna Seca During Spring Classic. The distinct cackle of
Nitro Revival will be coming to the Monterey Peninsula
during the second annual Spring Classic on May 18-20.
The gathering of vintage and restored nitromethane-
powered drag cars and legendary drag racing personalities
will take place at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during
the iconic facility’s vintage racing event with feature
activity occurring on Saturday, May 19. The Spring Classic
celebrates motorsports eras from the 1960s, ‘70s, ‘80s,
and ‘90s. Nitro Revival brings the sights and sounds of the
early days of front-engine Top Fuel dragsters and other
organized hot rod racing back to life with a large lineup of
fully restored machines. It serves as a reunion for racers
from that era and gives fans the experience of a drag
racing museum come to life. Fuelers will do push starts
with period-correct push start vehicles and burnouts. There
will also be a large turnout of classic street rods and hot
rods. The Saturday event will close with a “Line of Fire”
mass fire-up that will have the cackling sounds of vintage
drag cars echoing through the rolling hills of the scenic
Monterey Peninsula. “Nitro Revival is a unique car show
with unique vehicles that celebrate drag racing,” said Steve
Gibbs, Nitro Revival producer. “Laguna Seca is an iconic
place with a facility that can accommodate the growth
of Nitro Revival, and we are able to add a historical drag
race element to their event. There is a lot of drag racing
history on the Central Coast and Bay Area. Monterey
also has a lot to offer as a destination.” Nitro Revival will
enhance the paddock experience of the three-day vintage
race held May 18-20. The 11 run groups of approximately
200 historically-correct sports and race cars that will
race on the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course during the
Spring Classic range from 1966-74 Can-Am to 1974-94
Stock Cars to Historic Motorcycle exhibitions. “Everyone
who has an interest in motorsports, cars and moving
entertainment will enjoy their experience at the Spring
Classic that features Nitro Revival,” added Gill Campbell,
senior vice president of events at Mazda Raceway Laguna
Seca. “There will be something to enjoy for all ages, from
sports and Formula One race cars to historic motorcycles
to the high-powered drag racers; it will be a sensory
