Some people have a hard time growing up.
Customer: “Do you have something suitable for a twelve
year old? It is my husband’s birthday.” I used to lead a
Children’s Church. Now I’m primarily in big church. Yet
I still hear a lot of “me” and “mine” whether it is talking
about toys or songs. Growing up is hard to do. Even at
churches.
Geologist studying St. Paul’s Cathedral in London reported
the church is moving down Fleet Street at the rate of one
inch every 1000 years. Even for a church that’s a little slow.
So how do you tell if your church is grown-up or maturing.
Some say Bible knowledge. But I know Christians who
know where Antioch is but don’t know who their neighbor
is.
An obvious mark of a mature, grown-up church is
unselfishness. I believe Eastmont is like that in so many
ways. Better than the average. So don’t read this as a
condemnation, but a reminder of God’s great work in and
through us.
Stay with me now. Unselfishness affects us in how we treat
those we already know. I call that community. We support,
care and love those at Eastmont. This is a no brainer. The
other way we are unselfish is how we treat those we don’t
know. Those outside Eastmont. So let me close with one
quick example.
California fires have destroyed so many homes. A
support group formed and they talked about what they
lost. Personal items that meant so much hurt the most.
One lady had a habit of welcoming new movers to their
community by giving away small, nice gifts that had meant
something to her. It was her way of connecting. When the
fire destroyed all she had, these same people returned these
gifts to her to help refurnish her new house.
Get the picture. God says there will be a fire one day. All
will be wiped away. Yet even a cup of water given in His
name will be remembered and rewarded.
Final story. On February 5, 1996 Newsweek wrote of a
work of art by Michelangelo that had been discovered after
missing for ninety years. It was a three foot statue of Cupid.
Guess where it was found? In Manhattan, on Fifth Avenue
near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Thousands of
people walked by it every day and no one recognized it for
the treasure it was.
In the same way, many of us walk by masterpieces
every day. Some are three-foot tall, others over six-feet.
Growing up involves being unselfish enough to say “Hi”, to
encourage, to pray, to help. You have done this repeatedly
and it makes me proud to be your pastor. Thanks for being
grown-ups.

DISCIPLE NOW WEEKEND
DNow is February 16-18. The cost for the weekend is $35
for 7-12 Grade students. Call Cleve or Karen at the church

COMPLETE CONFERENCE
This conference for teenage girls is March 2-3, at Eastern
Hills Baptist Church. Cost to attend is $35. Registration
information is available upstairs. Call Karen Bush for details.
FOUNDATIONS 260 BIBLE PLAN
Students are reading through the Bible with the F-260 plan,
available upon request. Also, Cleve is leading a Sunday
evening discussion group based on this reading plan for
parents/adults at 5:00 p.m.
SUMMER MISSION TRIP - NASHVILLE
Our students will attend MFuge this Summer in Nashville,
Tennessee, June 25-30. The cost to attend will be $300 per
person. Registration begins February 25.
SUPER SUMMER ALABAMA - July 19-13.
This is a discipleship camp for 8th through 12th grade
students. Registration begins Feb. 25. The cost is $125 for
those who register by Sunday, April 8.

Mosaic
A Thursday night Bible study/worship gathering for 18-
25 year olds. Will be held on the campus of Cloverdale
Baptist. Pray for God to open doors. Contact Gene if you’re
interested in learning about how to serve in this area.
Generations Ministry
College students who are looking for someone to disciple
and mentor them are encouraged to apply. We’ll prayerfully
match you up with someone to guide you in your faith
