UNIAG

The Management Applied Research Unit (UNIAG), young R&D Unit created in 2014,
comprises researchers from 4 Higher Education Institutions that are located in the North
Region of Portugal, namely the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), of Cávado and Ave
(IPCA), Oporto (IPP) and Viana do Castelo (IPVC).

UNIAG - Mission

 The mission of the UNIAG is to promote and develop applied scientific


research, particularly in the fields of business management, its efficiency
and sustainability; tourism and public policies in transversal and
multidisciplinary context, aiming to establish a strong link between theory
and practice, as well as to transfer knowledge to society.

 The main objective of UNIAG is to promote innovation and


entrepreneurship, thus contributing to the identification and promotion of
added value, competitive advantages and development of a potential of
excellence in the regional action area of the 4 Polytechnic Institutes.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH GROUPS

UNIAG's research activity is organized in research teams on the basis of the


scientific areas that it represents; and is based on the collaboration of 42 PhD
researchers from 4 Polytechnic Institutes.

Three scientific research groups were created bearing in mind the transversal
and multidisciplinary strand proposed:
(i) Efficiency of Organizations, Markets and Sustainability;
(ii) Efficiency of Public Management and Policies;
(iii) Tourism, Sustainability and Competiveness.

Biographical Note

Paula Odete Fernandes graduated in Business Administration, received MSc Degree in Management
and a PhD in Economics and Management (2005). She is currently a Full Professor of the Department
of Economics and Management at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança - Portugal. She teaches
several courses in the area of Management, since 1992.

She is Scientific Coordinator of UNIAG (Applied Management Research Unit). She participated in 13
R&D international and national projects (5 as responsible researcher) and supervised one PhD thesis
and several master theses (over 75 master theses). She published more than 190 publications (44
Listed in the Thomson Reuters ISI Index & SCOPUS) in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and
proceedings, and has several communications at international scientific conferences.

She serves as a member of Program Board and Organizing Committees for some Scientific
Committees of International Conferences and has collaborated as reviewer with several journals.

Alcina Nunes [alcina@ipb.pt

Biography

Alcina Nunes graduated and received a MSc Degree in Economics. She has a PhD in Economics, in
the field of Mathematical Economics and Econometric Methods, and is currently a Full Professor of
the Department of Economics and Management of IPB - Portugal. Since 1997, she teached several
courses in the area of economics, quantitative methods, and doing business. She is the pedagogical
director of the bachelor in International Business Management, fully lectured in English by ESTiG-
IPB. She participated in international projects and has several publications in peer-reviewed
journals, book chapters and proceedings at the same time she presents an activity as scientific
reviewer. In the past collaborated with the Office for Strategy and Studies of the Economics
Minister of Portugal as a data manager expert to master the Portuguese employer-employee
matched dataset.

• Amélia Maria Martins Pires graduated in Business Administration (1992), received MSc
Degree in Accounting and Finance (2000) and a PhD in Corporate Management (2005),
specialization in Accounting. She is currently a Full Professor of the Department of Economics
and Management at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança - Portugal.

Ana Paula Monte graduated in Business Administration, received MSc Degree in Business
Management and a PhD in Management Sciences – specialization in Corporate Finance (2008). She is
currently a Full Professor of the Department of Economics and Management at the Polytechnic
Institute of Bragança - Portugal. She teaches several courses in the area of Corporate Finance, Financial
Risk Analysis, and Financial Calculus since 1995. She is member of UNIAG (Applied Management
Research Unit). She is member of Scientific Commission of the Master in Accountancy and Finance-
MAF (APNOR). She participated in 3 R&D international projects (2 as coordinator in IPB) and teached in
3 intensive programs (2 LLP/Erasmus IP). She supervised 28 master theses. She has more than 40
publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and proceedings, and has several
communications at international scientific conferences. She has collaborated as reviewer with some
journals and international scientific conferences.

Biography

Carlos Rompante Cunha is graduated in Computer Science, received a Ph.D. Degree in Computer
Science (2015). He is currently an Assistant Professor of the Department of Computers Science and
Mathematics at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança - Portugal. He teaches several courses in the
area of Computer Science, since 2003. He is Deputy Coordinator of the Department of Computers
Science and Mathematics and also Director of the BSc Degree in Informatics and Communications.
He is member of UNIAG (Applied Management Research Unit) and Collaborator of INESC TEC, Porto.
He participated in 2 R&D projects and has more than 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals and
proceedings. He serves as a member of Program Board for some Scientific Committees of
International Conferences and has collaborated as reviewer with several journals, being member of
the Editorial Advisor Board of two International Journals.

Biographical Note

European PhD in Social Sciences (Economics and Management) and she is graduates in Management
from the ISEG University of Lisboa. She is currently an assistant professor at ESTGA – School of
Technology and Management, University of Aveiro and at ESTIG - School of Technology and
Management, Institute Polytechnic of Bragança, where she lectures several courses in the areas of
management and economics, both at master and graduate levels. She is a researcher at UNIAG –
Management Applied Research Unit. She participated in 1 R&D international projects and has more
than 30 publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and proceedings, and has several
communications at international scientific conferences. She has collaborated as a member of

Biographical Note

João Paulo Teixeira is graduated, Master and PhD in Electrical and Computers Engineering from
the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). He is Professor since 1995 in the
Polytechnic Institute of Bragança teaching in the areas of digital electronics, signal processing
and rehabilitation engineering. He is author of 2 books, twelve chapter books, 27 review articles
and more than 50 conference papers, all with revision by his peers. His research interest areas
are related with signal processing and signal modulation and forecasting. He is working with
Artificial Neural Networks, Speech Signal Processing, EEG signals for diagnosis of Alzheimer
disease, ECG signal events detection and Prediction of Tourism Time Series.

Luís Carlos Magalhães is Graduated in Electronics Engineering - Industrial Control. In 1999 received
an MSc degree in CIM – Computer Integrated Manufacturing and in 2004 a PhD degree in
Manufacturing Systems Engineering. He is a Coordinator professor at School of Public Management,
Communication and Tourism, at the Business and Legal Sciences department, lecturing Logistics,
Production Management and Project Management. Currently he is the dean of School of Public
Management, Communication and Tourism, president of the scientific and pedagogical councils of
the school. It is a full member of the Mountain Research Centre and the Research Unity in Applied
Management. His main research interests focus on the study of supporting architectures to virtual
enterprise life cycle and its associated functionality, making the migration to the subject from
production to tourism and applying its functionality to education, namely in agile project based
learning, having published several papers on that issue and being members of several team projects.

Biographical Note

With an academic career started in 2003 is currently Associated Professor at the Polytechnic
Institute of Bragança, and director of the Tourism Marketing Graduation. His areas of research
interest are Territorial and Tourism Marketing, Industrial and Regional Dynamics, Wine
Marketing, Networks and Industrial relationships, Tourism Branding.

We should also emphasize his regular participation in research programs, conferences and
international scientific meetings, as well as the publication of several chapters in books and
articles in international journals.
