With council’s suggestion of possibly chang-
ing downtown’s two-hour parking to three-hour
parking, Brian Code addressed council on Feb. 7
to make sure his concerns were heard, retailers
were included in decision making and to secure

“I respect council’s right to make decisions for
the Town of Strathmore, but I don’t feel this re-
spect is given back to the downtown retailers,”
said Code. “It is clear that our thoughts are not
wanted. There has been no formal process of
any kind to involve all stakeholders in a decision
that dramatically affects us all. This has also been
demonstrated clearly in the lack of the critical re-
view of the revitalization project.”

Strathmore youth change the conversation
about their generation

Strathmore youth want the public to
know they’re being misrepresented and
are changing the narrative by support-
ing each other and getting involved in
the community on behalf of the town’s
younger generation.
Roughly 10 individuals are currently
serving on the recently established Teen
Advisory Council that came to fruition
in November 2017. Its original purpose
was to receive input from teenagers on
designing the youth-designated area at
the newly renovated Strathmore Munic-
ipal Library space.
While the area – located at the north-
west side of Lambert Centre – is still
being decorated by the council, mem-
bers have had no shortage of ideas for
projects and events to trigger youth in-
volvement and benefit the community.
“When we first started, the purpose
was a little bit more focused on getting
the teen space ready… from there we
were hoping it would evolve into more
of a group where we can do activities
together and plan activities for the li-
brary, to be involved in whatever way
they wanted to be involved and what-
ever they saw a need for in the commu-
nity,” said Karla Mallach, coordinator
for the Teen Advisory Council.
“They’ve all been super on board
with it and supportive of each other.
Every idea that’s come up they’ve found
a way to work together. I’ve been really
impressed. As far as ideas go, they have
an abundance.”

Mulek joined Mallach over the week-
end to deliver handmade Valentine’s
Day cards from patrons to seniors at
Wheatland Lodge. One hundred cards
were distributed on the surprise visit
on Feb. 10. Despite a willingness to get

“I thought, I spend a lot of time here,
I might as well help out and put my
mark on it,” said Jones. “It’s very fun to
design the whole area, work together
and design the theme. I like giving back
to the community and all the ideas that
come up in meetings are so great. We’re
not as moody as you might think.”
The council began meetings while
still in their temporary location on
Third Avenue, but meetings have been
running regularly since January. Strath-
more’s teens are encouraged to join the
council for a meeting, a longer duration
or to help out with an event.
Study Buddies, a program for stu-
dents of all ages to find a study partner
for help and motivation in preparing
for exams or completing homework,
takes place every Wednesday from 4 to
5 p.m.

Snow is on the ground which means
winter is officially upon us. The arrival
of cold weather means our firefighters
will be in constant battle with slippery
roads, hidden fire hydrants and frozen
hose lines. Do your part to help keep
your neighbourhood safe by clearing
hydrants of snow. A clear path on all
four sides makes hydrants easier to lo-
cate and operate in an emergency.
In the winter months, it is especial-
ly important to be conscious of how
snow-covered fire hydrants can delay
fire department services, costing cru-
cial seconds or minutes that can mean
the difference between saving homes,
buildings, structures and residents and
not doing so.
The general rule of thumb is that a
fire will double in size every 30 sec-
onds and a fire engine carries about
three to five minutes worth of water.
So, when the engine runs out of water,
fire hydrants become indispensable as
every passing second allows the fire to
grow.
If you have a contractor for snow re-
moval, please consider having the con-
tractor remove the snow. If you have
physical limitations, and because of
these limitations are unable to clear
snow, you should ask a friend or neigh-
bour.
In closing, winter can be a time
for enjoying the great outdoors with
friends and family. Please help keep
your neighbourhood homes and prop-
erties safe from winter fire hazards by
ensuring your fire hydrants are clear
and readily accessible for firefighters in
your area.

“Marigold is not asking Wheatland County for

The feasibility study gave cost projections to the

from Alberta Municipal Affairs. Marigold wants the
county loan to buffer any extra costs and considers
it will make lump sum payments after the current

A building lot has been located south of the No
Frills grocery store. The site allows the library to tap
into the Supernet connection, which is necessary
for so many of its services to the public.
There is a partnership with Western Irrigation
District which will move its head offices into half

Toombs said they approached the Town of Strath-
more, but the terms offered were not as flexible as
they would have liked.
“We are really keen to stay in Strathmore as we
have established ourselves here. We are looking for-
ward to doing things for and with Wheatland Coun-
ty,” said Toombs.
Watch clerk debate continues
Clarity was the term used by several Wheatland
County councillors as they discussed ongoing nego-
tiations for RCMP support.
Councillor Amber Link strongly advocated for fi-
nancing two additional clerks.
“When we look at our strategic plan, we high-
lighted rural crime,” Link said supporting her sug-
gestion.
She said residents are seeing implications of cov-
erage shortages in their areas.
“There is a lot of info we aren’t clear on here,”
said Deputy Reeve Scott Klassen.
Others were unsure about details of the ask, and
suggested another meeting with the RCMP and
their rural municipal partners.
“The partnership is important to me and council
moving forward,” said Reeve Glenn Koester.
There was doubt about how many watch clerk
positions were necessary. The Town of Strathmore
is currently financing two positions and indicated
if support is not given it risks jeopardizing RCMP
service coverage in rural areas.
Funding was also a topic as to whether it should
be an outright pay or a pay per capita basis.
“We know where the policing injustices lie,” said
Councillor Tom Ikert. “We have the problem that
there are whole lot of policing assets that we have
no control over.”
Councillor Ben Armstrong raised caution, saying
any decision to finance clerks in the Strathmore
detachment may mean other detachments will be
looking for help in the future as well.
Administration was requested to set up further
meetings and the matter will be brought to the re-
gional partnership meeting.
Dialysis unit a no go, but push continues
Reeve Glenn Koester acknowledged the response
from the Alberta health minister on getting a dialy-
sis unit in Strathmore. He said when the Strathmore
Hospital renovations had been discussed, he men-
tioned to the minister the need for a unit here.
“Even when they were still planning, it was indi-
cated there was room for another x-ray machine,
but no space for a dialysis unit.”
Council was hoping a private clinic may be found
to host the service and they were sending a letter
to the health minister to find ways to assist dialysis
patients in the Strathmore area. The Siksika Health
Unit will be setting up a unit for its residents; how-
ever, there was no mention of a collaborative effort
with Wheatland County or the Town of Strathmore.
Empty schools in hiatus
Schools that were closed down due to the reallo-
cation of students to Wheatland Crossing School are
still available for purchase, and Golden Hills School
Division (GHSD) is waiting for a decision whether
Wheatland County is interested in purchasing them.
Wheatland County administration collected infor-
mation on the status of the schools and determined
more decisions needed to be considered.
“There are a number of upgrades necessary if
they continued as schools; that wouldn’t be appli-
cable if they were operated as community facilities,”
said Wheatland County CAO Alan Parkin.
The cost of utilities to keep the buildings open
averages about $30,000 per year. GHSD determined
about $2 million to $3 million is needed to upgrade
the buildings for school use.
Councillor Ben Armstrong requested information
on what the costs would be for demolition, if the
county took on the building and later needed de-
molition due to costs in the future.
“We have to be really careful our hearts don’t get
involved in this,” stated Councillor Tom Ikert. “It’s a
big thing to maintain the whole building.”
There have been some ideas for use of the build-
ings, such as community centres, recreation centres,
adult course sites, fire training facilities, small busi-
ness offices and artist studio space.
Councillor Armstrong said if the facility is devel-
oped, it may vacate spaces currently occupied.
There will be public meetings held to determine
the thoughts of the community for these facilities.
Administration will request a tour of the facilities
for Wheatland County council, so they can see first-
hand the condition of the schools. Parkin said the
renovations depend on the use for the buildings.
Councillors asked if the buildings are currently
maintained, and about community interest for
adapting the buildings.
Currently administration was not aware of any in-
terested parties.
Council also asked administration to the cost ef-
fectiveness of recycling parts of the building. There
were also questions about the playground struc-
tures on those sites.
Questioning Christmas hamper surplus
Wheatland County council requested that the
Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society
and Wheatland Family and Community Support
Services present to council the purpose and use
of an approximate $70,000 surplus to their annual
budget. Administration was requested to set up a
presentation to council.

Rosebud’s wastewater treatment plant to celebrate pilot launch

Excitement is growing as Rosebud is gearing up
for its first look at the long-awaited wastewater
treatment plant during its official pilot launch in
two weeks time.
The innovative wastewater treatment system,
which has now been in operation for a few weeks,
uses algae to remove contaminants from liquid
waste, producing clean water and a valuable, mar-
ketable biomass.
“(Facility tours) will give people the opportunity
to actually see how the process works, by actually
going in and having a look at what the cultivation
system looks like, and how the effluent water gets
drawn in and how the discharge water, clear water,
goes out, and what the biomass looks like,” said
Elizabeth Huculak, vice president of products and
operations at Symbiotic Envirotek, the company
that developed the algae-based technology.
Turning waste into asset, the system produces
both economic and environmental benefits.
“This algae is growing on the waste that we’re
creating in our communities, and creating product
from the carbon dioxide that’s not good for our
environment,” Huculak said. “So it’s kind of a win
on a number of fronts.”
The resulting biomass, harvestable every four
days, “will be sold for use in a large variety of
valuable bio-products, such as lubricants, drilling
fluids, hydraulic fluid, plastics, jet fuels and other
specialty chemicals, offsetting operating costs and
reducing infrastructure costs for the municipality,”
said a prepared statement from Symbiotic.
This mode of processing also reduces the en-
vironmental damage caused by the nitrogen and
phosphorus discharge of more traditional waste-

The original objections to Badlands Motorsports
Resort developing a high-end condo/race track
in the Rosebud River Valley began a decade ago.
However, residents are passionate and persistent,
still fighting to ensure the environment and sensi-
tive species are protected.
“We feel that the Alberta government has the
tools in the Alberta Wetland Policy and the South
Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP) to effectively
regulate against this development,” said Wendy
Clark, spokesperson for the Save the Rosebud
group. “Decisions have not been made using the
collaborative and integrated approach to achieve
the outcomes of the SSRP/AWP.”
Clark said 83 per cent of residents surround-
ing the Badlands Motorsports Resort development
live in Wheatland County and the development
is bordered on three sides by Wheatland County.
However, excluding herculean efforts, Wheatland
County residents don’t have a say in Kneehill
County decisions. The result is conflict between
a cash-poor municipality contravening the wishes
of generational environmentally conscious neigh-
bours.
Should the development go forward, it will be
an added tax base for Kneehill County. They have
granted development permits to the company.
The resident action group noted that Alberta
land use policies have stated municipalities are
encouraged to expand inter-municipal planning

“At the conclusion of the six-month pilot, we
expect to be able to have this as an approvable
system for all communities,” she said. “So it’s a sig-
nificant undertaking. It’s not much of a risk for us
because we have actually run the wastewater treat-
ment system (off-site), using the Rosebud waste-
water in 2015 and 2016. But AEP (Alberta Environ-

“In my opinion, the proposed Area Structure
Plan (Badlands Motorsports Resort 2013) is not
consistent with the Kneehill County Municipal
Development Plan (Kneehill County 2013), spe-
cifically as it relates to guidance and policies deal-
ing with Environmentally Significant Areas and
valleys. In addition, the Badlands Motorsports Re-
sort Area Structure Plan is not consistent with the
Government of Alberta Land Use Policies (1996),
as they relate to environmental protection, since
the Area Structure Plan promotes the loss of sig-
nificant wildlife and plant habitat and establishes
inappropriate land use,” stated Wallis in his study.

and activities offsite will affect rare species in the

her four siblings joked that a bug
would never have been spotted in the

Despite her shipshape upbringing
and well-kept grooming, the 79-year-
old is amongst 31 senior residents
from Sunset Haven, Wheatland Hous-
ing’s independent living facility, scram-
bling to pack up belongings, battling
to access one of two dryer machines
and avoiding bed bugs that have the
residents in an uproar.
“It’s just chaos here, I’m not kidding,”
said Girouard. “Everybody is running
around like a chicken with its head cut
off. I’m 79 years old and I can’t believe
this is happening to us. We’re fighting
when we are trying to get our dryers
and washers going. Some people are
being inconvenienced, and had it not
been for my two daughters, I don’t
know what I’d do.”
Girouard said residents were told to
pack their belongings in containers,
dry the items at high heat in the dryer,
and stay with family members or ar-
range for other accommodations when

available to spray down the units.
Girouard has two daughters living in
Strathmore who have provided addi-
tional support. Both women are foster
parents with a full household. While

“They said we had a choice; we could
stay with somebody or stay here. Well

their house,” she said. “I’m pretty pa-

Transparent about Poppy Fund

Board members of Strathmore’s Royal
Canadian Legion Branch #10 are adopt-
ing a proactive approach regarding
money allocated from the local Poppy
Fund after reports of an audit into the
Calgary Poppy Fund allegedly revealed
misuse of funds.
According to a Global News investi-
gation, the news outlet obtained a five-
page document a year ago that shed
light on a number of consequential al-
legations related to the misuse of funds.
These include thousands of dollars spent
on non-veterans, the issuance of im-
proper charitable tax receipts, employee
expense reports that were not reviewed
and unaccounted medical equipment.
As a result, Strathmore Legion mem-
bers are focusing on transparency and
putting the minds of Strathmore and
area residents at ease, by making their
spending accessible.
“The accountant who did the audit saw
fit to make it public, and there’s $32,000
that was given to a non-veteran,” said
Irene Knappe, chair of the Poppy Fund
in Strathmore. “Stuff like that is all com-
ing to the forefront and they’re reiterat-
ing that the Poppy Fund belongs to the
public, to the people who donated every
penny. As such, I want to make us total-
ly transparent for Strathmore and area,
and let them know how their money
is being spent so that there’s no fear in
them donating at the next campaign.”
Strathmore’s Poppy Fund financial
year starts on Oct. 1 and ends on Sept.
30. Since October 2017, $500 was pro-
vided to a member veteran towards
bathroom renovations, two bursaries
totaling $1,000 were given to two rela-
tives of member veterans, $3,770 was
approved by Provincial Command and

oxygen tank, $122 was gifted to a mem-
ber veteran for two trips to Calgary for

The Parks and Recreational Facilities Coordinator generally works in the Wheatland
County Administrative Office. Generally the incumbent will work 7.5 hours per day,

overtime worked will be in the form of time off in lieu as per Policy. Paid vacation
will be based upon existing Wheatland County Policy, subject to revision from time

The primary function of the Administrative Assistant to the GM Agriculture,
Community and Protective Services and Planning and Development is to provide
administrative services and assistance to the General Manager and to the Planning
and Development department. This position will support the work done by the
General Manager Agriculture, Community and Protective Services and Planning and
Development staff by completing administrative and clerical tasks focusing on
enhancing customer service, enabling the General Manager and all Planning and
Development staff to fulfill specialized roles within Wheatland County.
About the successful candidate:
The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:
 High degree of professionalism and effective communication skills
 Ability to take Minutes in a variety of meetings
 Preference will be given to candidates with administrative experience in a
planning and development department within an urban or rural municipality
 Known for his/her ability to develop credibility and effective working
relationships with employees and external stakeholders
 Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a
team
 Must be able to take initiative and work with little direction to meet deadlines
 Understands and follows complex written or oral instructions of a general
nature to complete assigned tasks
 Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
 Basic training in WHMIS, First Aid with CPR
 Able to maintain confidentiality regarding matters which affect the assigned
department and the County as a whole
The incumbent must also demonstrate the following personal attributes:

The incumbent would normally attain the required knowledge and skills through
completion of on-site training. Specific knowledge, experience, and training

The Administrative Assistant to the GM Agriculture, Community and Protective
Services and Planning and Development works in the Wheatland County
Administrative Office. Generally the incumbent will work 7.5 hours per day, five
days per week. The incumbent will be considered full time as per Wheatland
County Policy 6.3.1. Occasional overtime may be required; compensation will be in
the form of time off in lieu as per Policy. Paid vacation will be based upon existing
Wheatland County Policy, subject to revision from time to time. Salary will be in
line with the current County Employee Salary Grid and based on qualifications and
experience of incumbent.

Local girls aim for gold at Games

While the real Olympic Winter Games
occupy people’s PVRs these days, four
local girls will be treated to the life of
an Olympian when the biennial Alberta
Winter Games take place this weekend.
Cayley Boschee, McKenna Blades,
Camille Gauvin and Grace Olson will
represent Zone 2 ringette on the ice in
Fort McMurray, as the Games run from
Feb. 16-19 at the Anzac Recreation Cen-
tre.
For Blades and Olson, it’s a return
trip, as they were part of the Zone 2
unit that narrowly missed out on a
medal in 2016.
“They will serve as some of the lead-
ers on our team this year along with the
three other returning players, as they
have been there before,” said Zone 2
Assistant Coach Rhonda Olson, who
will be coaching in her third and final
games. “They are the oldest ones in our
dressing rooms and will be looked at to
lead them this weekend.”
They haven’t forgotten about their
fourth-place finish in Medicine Hat.
In fact, it has motivated the returning
group to lead a younger, less experi-
enced team at this year’s event.
“I was pretty excited when I found
out that I made the team again. I really
wanted another opportunity to go and
really enjoyed my time at the tourna-

The four locals will be joined by girls
aged 14 to 17 from Airdrie, Chester-
mere, Rockyford, Cochrane, Strathmore
and surrounding Calgary areas.
“We have a great mix of girls on our
team. We have used up our six practic-
es before the games and are hopefully
ready to go,” said Olson. “Camille will
be one of our stronger forwards as she
brings a great shot to our team. Cay-
ley will not jump up in the rush much,
but she is a smart, reliable defenceman
who takes care of business in her own
end.”
After tryouts were held last Novem-
ber, the team was announced shortly
after, giving the team a few practices
and games to get acquainted with one
another. It can be challenging for ath-
letes of such a wide-ranging age group
to briefly come together before a tour-
nament and expect quick-drying chem-
istry, but it is something they are work-
ing on.
“We’ve held three practices so far
and two games; one against the Zone 3
team and the other against a local U19
team. We went 1-1, so things are look-
ing pretty good so far,” said Gauvin, the
youngest of the group, a Grade 9 stu-
dent at Crowther Memorial Junior High
School.

Warriors knock off top seed from the North

The Wheatland Warriors are hot-
ter than a pistol and playing the best
hockey of their season as the year
winds down.
Taking on the North Division-lead-
ing West Central Tigers, the Warriors
picked up the decisive 5-2 decision
Feb. 11 at the Strathmore Family Cen-
tre.
After a scoreless first period, the lo-
cal double-A bantam team got things
going with goals from Jerrin Hendricks
and Bryce Benfield.
“That’s the kind of effort we were
looking for going into a game against
them,” said Warriors Head Coach Cody
Brown. “With only one game on the
weekend, we should have been rested
enough to have a strong start and we
were able to pull that off.”
The Tigers (21-7-3) pushed back
with three of their own goals, but the
Warriors were able to respond when
Alex Pagenkopf netted his second goal
of the season with 15 seconds remain-
ing in the frame.
“They’re the top team in the league
as far as I am concerned,” said Brown.
“At this point of the season it was great
to see how we stack up against a team
like that. We proved to ourselves that
we have a chance to knock off any
team in this league.”
Putting a lid on things was Ray War-
rack 56 seconds into the third, and
Brayden Ledrew picked up the empty-
netter for his second point on the af-
ternoon.
Between the pipes, Corey Ross
stopped 29 shots to earn his eighth
win of the season, as the Warriors (13-
14-2) have picked up victories in three
straight and in five of their last six out-
ings.
Aiming to keep the good times go-

Strathmore’s Will Conley was named
the Canalta Hotels Alberta Junior Hock-
ey League Player of the Week for the
week of Feb. 5 to 11.
The 20-year-old Conley is playing in
his third season with the Fort McMur-
ray Oil Barons and second as alternate
captain.
Helping lead the Oil Barons to three
victories last week, Conley netted five
goals and nine assists over those out-
ings to extend his point streak to seven
games and 17 points. He is currently
tied for second in scoring for the AJHL
with 68 points (42 goals and 26 assists).
In his productive week, Conley was
named Star of the Game twice. First,
when he scored a pair including the
game winner over the Camrose Kodiaks
Feb. 9, and second when he racked up
a five-point game (2G, 3A) over the
Sherwood Park Crusaders.
The former UFA Bison has commit-
ted to the Holy Cross Crusaders of the
National Collegiate Athletic Associa-

A freshman stepped into the spotlight with the
annual Spartan Tournament on the horizon.
Entering this season, Strathmore High School
Spartans senior boys Head Coach Matt Laslo was
excited to finally work with the tall and talented
Grade 10 student Daniel Mulder.
After a strong showing two weekends ago at the
Super South Tournament in Medicine Hat, Mulder
put all the tools on display last weekend in Aird-
rie at the always challenging George McDougall
Tournament.
In the opener against the host Mustangs Feb. 9,
the Spartans were blasted 119-60.
“They just didn’t miss. They had 43 points in
the first quarter and didn’t miss a 3 until the sec-
ond quarter,” said Laslo. “If they shoot the ball like
that, they can beat anyone. But when you live and
die by the three, you can be beat by anyone when
those shots don’t fall.”
In the Mustang splashfest, Mulder poured in 25
points to lead the Spartans.
Two weeks ago, the Spartans lost on a four-foot
heave at the buzzer. Last weekend, it happened
again, only from a further distance.
Up one with 27 seconds left, Laslo drew up a
play to get a basket from deep in the paint. Strug-
gling to inbound the ball, Filipionek chucked up
a mid-range jumper, as the Spartans couldn’t grab
the rebound against the St. Albert Catholic Sky-
hawks. A member of the Skyhawks grabbed the
ball, dribbled once and launched a prayer at the
buzzer from his own side of midcourt.
“He canned it; another swish,” said Laslo. “I
can’t believe we lost another game like that.”
Lost in the dramatics was another strong out-
ing by Mulder, who pulled out some old school
back-to-basket moves and faced up other big de-
fenders. He recorded 23 points, all from the three-
point line and in.
“He’s always working so hard on his game. He
has the skills to get baskets any way he wants,
it was just about getting comfortable at the high
school level and developing the confidence to
make those plays,” said Laslo. “He wanted the ball.
He was telling his teammates to get him the ball.”
In the consolation final, Mulder exploded for a
season-high 35.
“He’s a good ball handler who found some con-
fidence in his shot-making ability. Now he knows
he just doesn’t have to score from the post; he can
initiate from the wing, too.”
Not to be outdone was senior Ryan Edwards,
who recorded his tourney-high with 30 points.
Everything came together in the finale as Laslo’s
crew prepares for their host tournament this
weekend.
The Spartans will tip off at 3:45 p.m. Feb. 16
when they take on the Willow Creek Compos-
ite High School Cobras at the Strathmore High
School gym. The gold medal game is set for 7:30
p.m. Feb. 17.
The Spartans senior girls’ program was off last
weekend. They open tournament play Feb. 16 at
2 p.m. when they host the H.J. Cody High School
Lakers.

Kings cooked in season finale, prepare for HJHL playoffs

The best part about the playoffs — other than actu-
ally making the playoffs — is that they offer a new
beginning and a clean slate.
All of that is important to keep in mind, because
if the last two months of the Strathmore Wheatland
Kings season carried any weight in the playoffs, the
Kings would surely be looking at a first-round exit for
the second-straight year.
Granted, they weren’t dealt the easiest three games
to conclude the franchise’s ninth season. But perhaps
the team can take solace knowing their strongest
showing of the weekend came in the final game of a
three-game slate.
“Obviously we were looking for better outcomes
to go into the playoffs with, but it was a hard stretch
of games. We had a bunch of guys not there for the
weekend with different injuries and other things,”
said Kings alternate captain Cole Busslinger. “By the
end of the weekend we only had nine forwards and
four defencemen.”
The Kings were blanked by the Southern Division-
winning Coaldale Copperheads 2-0 Feb. 11 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
It was the closest contest all weekend, as new net-
minder Calum Humble pulled off 39 saves. He has
now faced more than 40 shots in four out of his seven
starts with the Kings.
“Calum has played really well since joining us. Goal-
tending hasn’t been our issue this year, but Calum
is most likely to start on Friday. He has obviously
earned the right,” said Kings Assistant Coach Keenan
Desmet.
The Kings only snapped 23 shots on net and went
0-for-3 on the power play, as Riese Nevil potted his
10th of the season in the second and Tyler Anderson
added a power play marker in the third to put the
Kings away.
“I’d say we got back to our strong work ethic in
that final game. We had gotten a little lackadaisical at
points on the weekend, but we were able to snap out
of it on Sunday,” said Busslinger.
That performance came on the heels of an 8-1 drub-
bing by the same Copperheads (24-10-2) one night
earlier at Coaldale Arena.
It was the former Copperhead Austin Holmes who
found the back of the net for the Kings. He scored an
unassisted tally for his 11th of the season. In two sea-
sons with the Copperheads, he scored 10 goals and
seven assists in 39 games.

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings will
not be hitting the playoffs with any sort
of momentum after dropping their final
three regular season games last week-
end.
In a tale of two seasons this year, the
Kings closed out the final two months
of the Heritage Junior Hockey League
regular season with a 2-8-2 record and
a minus-30 goal differential.
The Kings finished 12-21-3 with 27
points, which ranked the second-fewest
point total in franchise history and the
third fewest wins. Last year, the Kings
finished 16-18-4 with 36 points.
Finishing fifth in the Southern Divi-
sion one point ahead of the Medicine
Hat Cubs, the Kings will take on the
High River Flyers in the best-of-three
first round of the postseason. This will
be the first postseason meeting be-
tween the two clubs.
“It’s been close between us all season
and all the games have carried a lot of
intensity. I know that we’re going to go
out there and fight to get it done,” said
Kings forward Brad Tingey.
The Flyers finished 10 points ahead
of the Kings in the division with a 17-
16-3 record after taking the season se-
ries with the Kings 3-1.
All four regular season matchups
were tightly contested, but the Flyers
took the edge outscoring the Kings 18-
17.

Indus set for
playground upgrade

The rusty old playground at the Indus
School might be in line for a new face-
lift with the help of the Calgary Hitmen.
Led by Monique Williams, the Indus
School Council Society submitted a
plan to the Calgary Hitmen Foundation
Community Restoration Program for a
new playground at the school.
“Our current playground is 22 years
old; it’s rusty, has old wooden panels
that give the kids splinters and most
importantly it isn’t accessible for all
kids,” said Williams. “There are wooden
boards that stick up out of the ground
that keep the pea gravel inside.”
For the second year, the Hitmen
Foundation announced a $50,000 grant
for a community project for a neigh-
bourhood or community within a 50-ki-
lometre radius of the Calgary city limits.
“We were amazed by the thoughtful-
ness and creativity that went into all the
responses we received last year,” Hit-
men vice president and alternate gover-
nor Mike Moore said in a press release.
After sorting through all the appli-
cants, it was revealed Feb. 8 that the
Indus School project was chosen as one
of three final candidates for the grant.
“I was ecstatic when I heard the
news,” said Indus School vice principal
Colin MacDonald. “This is an incred-
ibly positive experience to provide an
opportunity for a significant portion
of kids in our community and help get
even more kids active to lead more
healthy lifestyles.”
As it stands now, anyone with walk-
ing disabilities struggles to use the play-
ground. The wooden boards prevent
wheelchair users access to the equip-
ment, while a hilly, bumpy walk from
the school’s doors can make it hard to
access as well.
“We are a rural school, so kids with
higher needs are drawn to us because
of our smaller class size and more one-
on-one teaching. There are kids and
parents who haven’t been able to ac-
cess the old playground,” said Williams,
who is a nurse and also a volunteer at
the school.
Talks of a new playground have been
in place for more than a year now, as
the plan is to replace the gravel with
a poured rubber surface, cancelling the
need for any wooden barriers. That,
along with a new sidewalk from the
school to the playground, would ac-
company the new digs.
The Indus School is home to 213 stu-
dents, from kindergarten up to Grade
9, all of whom use the old playground
before school, during recess and lunch,
and after school hours.
The council already has a $20,000
contribution from Rocky View County
and a $15,000 contribution from the
Rocky View School Division. They are
waiting to hear back about a $125,000
grant application with the Community
Facility Enhancement Program. Anoth-
er $50,000 from the Hitmen would be
enough to break ground this summer
on a new playground.
Upon hearing they were a finalist,
MacDonald was instructed to create a
video showing why fans should cast
their vote on the project. The video will
make the rounds on social media for
all to see. Voting opened Feb. 17 on
the Hitmen website (hitmenhockey.ca)
under the Community Restoration page
