Abstract:
The thesis is an attempt to study the competitive environment faced among the Integrated Steel plants
of India. Using the “Case Study” approach, the thesis analyses the competitiveness faced by two
organizations, belonging to the domestic steel industry of the 90’s. Though the two organizations have
striking similarities in their broad strategic postures, they do differ in their basic processes and their
product portfolio. A comparative analysis of these two organisations points out that the competitiveness
faced by a steel plant is firm specific and depends on the internal and external environment of the firm.
A few factors determining competition among the steel plants include good quality products, wide
distribution network, customer service, efficient logistics, investments in infrastructure and a responsive
sales force. Optimization of all the operations in the value chain of the steel unit results in better
competitiveness. The thesis concludes with few observations that could be useful for Indian Steel
industry in building competitiveness.
