CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

There are millions of machines in the world, run by companies and

family businesses. This machine gives a lot of benefits in convenience,

speed processing, availability, and versatility of machines. In most cocktail

bars, the bartender is the one that mixes and prepares drinks for customers

with different tastes when it comes to cocktail drinks. Due to time pressure

and demands from the customers, bartenders are prone to making mistakes

during the actual cocktail making process.

So, this project study aimed to have an automated cocktail machine

which will lessen the manpower needed and act as a bartender that mixes

ingredients to make cocktail drinks. It will reduce the amount of time needed

in making a cocktail and will improve accuracy in terms of cocktail volume as

it dispenses by the machine.

The project design is about the implementation of an automated

machine that will mix and dispense ingredients to produce a cocktail drink.

Using a microcontroller for predefined programs and instructions that

device, the user can select the cocktail from the list of choices.

This machine uses a microcontroller that will automatically function

when the user chose a cocktail mix in the android device. The machine has

a container that will hold the ingredients needed for a cocktail.

The problem in a bartender’s mix of cocktail drink is it must know a

wide range of drink recipes and be able to mix drinks accurately, quickly and

without waste. In continuous making of cocktail, a bartender’s mix cannot be

exact as the one they produced earlier. There was no balance in mixing of

volume in ingredients and when ingredients mixed together, the taste,

accuracy and alcohol content are not the same. The amount of alcohol may

vary, causing inconsistencies on the tastes. Numerous orders prolong the

time of customers waiting to get their drinks. Also, bartenders are prone to

exhaustion and these errors caused bar owner to lose their customers.

As a solution, the researchers decided to design a machine that will

serve as a bartender which can reduce and eliminate errors in the amount of

mixing ingredients for a cocktail drink.

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1.2.1 General Objective

The general objective of this study is to develop a machine that will

automatically produce cocktail drinks chosen by the user.

1.2.2 Specific Objectives:

The specific objectives of the study are:

1. To integrate a feature to the machine where it can dispense the ten

pre-selected cocktail drinks either heavy or light.

2. To test the machine and evaluate its performance on the bases of

accuracy, acceptability, _________

3. To integrate the wireless communication system of the machine and

to the end-user through Bluetooth technology.

1.3 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

1.3.1 Scope

The project depends and focuses on dispensing cocktail drinks

automatically by using a Bluetooth module which connects the android

phone to the cocktail machine. The machine uses a teensy 3.2

received from the input much faster that a regular microcontroller. A push

and pull solenoid is in series with the teensy 3.2 which controls the valves

that dispenses the ingredients. The prototype demonstrates the dispensing

of cocktail ingredients automatically and emulates the function of bar

tenders.

1.3.2 Limitation

The capabilities of the prototype do not have, thhough it can be

incorporated in future studies. (1) The cocktail machine can only cater one

android device at a time and not iOS device. (2) The machine is an open-

loop system because it does not detect the volume inside the container. (3)

the provided cocktails list cannot be replaced by other cocktails without

changing the program.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study enables the researchers to apply the knowledge regarding the

instrumentation and control. The principles in installing, calibrating and

configuring various instrumentation and control devices and systems as well

as microcontroller hardware, operating systems and common peripherals in

processing the project.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE & STUDIES

In recent years, there are couple more of past related project or paper

works that is related to this project. There have been several studies on

drink machines and use of microprocessors for the system.

2.1 Foreign Studies

The related project to this is “The Inebriator”, by two electronic

hobbyists from United Kingdom, Ian Cooper is an electrical engineering

technician and Jake Osborne is an IT. It is a Homemade Arduino powered

cocktail Machine, dispensing the signature cocktail "The Inebriator" drink. It

is powered by an Arduino Mega 2560 Microprocessor Project Board-

Arduino which is an open source electronics prototyping platform. A

separate console is used to select drinks, this uses a Fez Panda II running

.netmf code with a serial VFD Vacuum fluorescent display and a rotary

encoder for input. The console sends commands to the Arduino over a serial

connection. The cocktail definitions are stored on the Fez Panda II in xml

format on the SD card. All the low level mechanics code is run from the

Arduino, high level menu and cocktail code is on the Fez Panda II.

Eventually the console will be replaced with anloc.148
(+63)046-4164324 Android Tablet. A stepper
www.eac.edu.ph/cavite
motor is used to drive the drinks shelf, with acceleration and deceleration to

allow high speed without spilling. A DC motor is used to operate the optics.

All mixers are in plastic bottles in a cool box, each bottle has two pipes, one

that is hooked to the gas tank and the other goes from the bottom of the

bottle to a valve. When the gas tank is opened through a regulator the

bottles are pressurized to a low safe pressure. When 12v is applied to the

valve it opens, and the pressure causes the liquid to flow through the pipe

and ultimately into the glass. Each mixer has its own valve and individually

controllable. There is also a cut off valve for the gas supply. A force sensitive

resistor is in place to detect the presence of a glass to prevent accidental

operation. An RFID sensor is integrated to allow operators with a valid RFID

token to get at admin functions such as priming of the mixers, and prevent

inebriated users from accidentally causing chaos. There is a small cluster of

RGB LEDs in the drinks tray to allow for illumination of the glass and is

further used to indicate running and completion of dispensing a cocktail.

There is also a small cluster of RGB LEDs in the top of each optic to

illuminate each spirit.

Another related project to this is the “Liquor Tot Dispenser”, by Craig

Warren Garvie. A liquid tot dispenser has a container for the liquid and a

thimble having an inlet from the container and loc.148
(+63)046-4164324 an outlet, both being valve
www.eac.edu.ph/cavite
controlled. The interior of the thimble has a vent to atmosphere and a

second vent from a low level in the container to atmosphere. In operation,

starting with a full thimble, the liquid is dispensed into a suitable vessel and

air is drawn from atmosphere into the thimble through the first vent. The

liquid is then caused to fill the thimble, thus displacing the air and causing a

partial vacuum in the space in the container above the level of the liquid.

This vacuum causes air to be drawn through the second vent from

atmosphere, and this air bubbles through the liquid into the space, thereby

restoring the pressure in the space.

2.2 Local Studies

A related project paper entitled “An Automated Microcontroller-based

Cocktail Mixer and Dispenser”, by De La Salle University – Manila. In this

study it focused on the design and implementation of an automated

microcontroller-based cocktail mixer and dispenser that can provide mixed

drinks with the push of a single button. The machine uses three

microcontrollers that functions as the brain of the system to which all the

operating functions of each module are chronologically programmed in it. It

has predefined programs and instructions that are responsible for the

cocktail production processes that (+63)046-4164324

the use through an input device. The machine has two sets of dispensers

responsible for dispensing the ingredients to the mixing container and for

pouring the final cocktail in a glass. Submersible pumps, which are

controlled by relays, used to transfer the ingredients to the mixing container

through hose pipes. The quantity of each ingredient to be dispensed is

controlled and monitored by the microcontroller’ program. After dispensing

the right proportions and transferring them into the mixing container, a

simple motor is used to mix them. After which, the cocktail is dispensed in a

glass through a valve controlled by a servo motor. The ingredient level for

every container is monitored by a water level sensor located inside the

container. The system is able to serve a drink by offering a choice of 9 pre-

programmed cocktails and customized drinks out of the six basic ingredients

at the touch of a button.

2.4 Solenoid Devices

2.4.1 Solenoid Switching

These are electro mechanical devices & these devices either interrupt

or complete a circuit when activated from a remote source. Relays it consists

a coil, moving contact armature & external connections. When the coil has

current flowing through it the electromagnetic effect pulls in the contact

armature. The armature is pivoted and is held in position by the spring

force; with no current flowing the armature returns to its original position by

the spring force. Solenoid: It is also an electro mechanical device, it is a type

of transducer that converts electrical energy into linear displacement. It

normally uses for the actuation of pneumatic or hydraulic valves. It consists

of an inductive coil wound around a steel or iron armature. The coil is formed

such that the armature can be moved in and out of the solenoid's body. The

moved.

2.4.2 DC Electric Solenoid Valve

RSSM-3 is a quarter inch valve that is two-way direct acting valve

with a normally closed operating position. There are two ports in which

media flows, the valve will open when energized and allow media to pass

through. Taking the energy away from the valve will close it and stop the

flow. This ¼

inch valve works ideally with air, other pneumatic applications as well as

water. This specific valve gas a 12 VDC coil with a voltage range that is -

+10. The coil head is fitted with a 14” wire lead that can be connected to the

terminals. Its response time is fast and acts less than one second.

2.4.3 Linear Solenoid

The linear solenoid works on the basic principal as the

electromechanical relay acts. They can also be switched and controlled

using transistors or MOSFET’s. It is an electromagnetic device that converts

electrical energy into a mechanical pushing or pulling force or motion. Linear

solenoids basically consist of an electrical coil wound around a cylindrical

Android is also the Java class library used to build applications for the

cocktail machine Android software. Java on Android makes use of XML for

variables such as strings and integers. XML is also used to control the

movement of solenoid valves and style of an application. There is separate

layer convention is similar to Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) for

content and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) for style for the Teensy 3.2

programming. There are differences due to different languages and

functionalities as HTML is not a programming language as Java is. However,

from a conceptual level this comparison can be made. As far as practical

aspects are concerned, Java defines the button’s functionality, while XML

defines the buttons’ text, color, font, weight and size.

We conducted an experiment to determine the behavior of each

ingredient when dispensed by the valves. Dispensing the exact amount of

liquid for each kind of liquor mix to be processed by the machine was very

important since it significantly affected the taste of the end product. The

volume dispensed per seconds of individual valves is discussed in chapter 4.

3.5 Machine Evaluation

We evaluate the machine base on its output discussed in chapter 4 and

its behavior while processing the given data in microcontroller. The primary

concern is the response of the solenoid valves. The group tested and tried to

locate and fix the possible sources that affects the output of the machine.

During the implementation and testing, the group found out the dispensed

ingredients of each valves is not consistent. To fix this problem, we

reprogrammed the microcontroller and changed the time delay of each

valves. Using this formula.

𝑚𝑙
Time = 𝑉𝑎𝑙𝑣𝑒 𝐴𝑣𝑒.

3.5.1 Final Testing

Final testing of the machine was made to ensure that the machine is

dispensing proper amount of ingredients. By doing so, the group was able to

fix the problem and meet the objectives. The result will be discussed in

CHAPTER IV

Results and Discussions

This chapter presents the description of the project, analysis and

tabulation of data gathered and graphical representation and the summary of

the overall evaluation of the project. Which is divided into two parts, (1) the

volume of the cocktail produced during the final test, and (2) the physical

appearance of the machine.

4.1 Initial Test of the Valves

The following procedures were done to produce the test:

1. Test the volume dispenses of each 18 valves in 3 trials.

2. Measure the volume dispensed by the use of the beaker.

3. Calibrate and compute the volume dispensed to make 75ml for each

cocktail.

Samples for calibrating the volume dispensed for each Cocktail Mix.

In the tables below, 2.5 Oz were converted to 75 ml, and to compute

for the time of the solenoid to dispense the volume needed, it was computed

by dividing the value of ml to the Ave. dispensed by the valves in the table 3.

Formula:

𝑚𝑙
Time = 𝑉𝑎𝑙𝑣𝑒 𝐴𝑣𝑒.

The volume dispense may represents error in percentage out of 3

trials of each dispensed ingredient. The densest of all cocktail drinks is

boracay because of its ingredient which is the evaporated milk. The least

dense is the gin & tonic because of its liquid form.

Following factor of errors are:

 The quality of materials (customized solenoid valve) that has been

used.

 Different density of ingredients.

 The level of ingredients in the container

4.2 Volume Dispensed During the Final Test

 Different density of ingredients.

 The level of ingredients in the container.

 The internal resistance of the solenoid which affect the timing

because of its behavior during the transient state.

4.3 Performance of the Project

The researchers were able to produce the prototype and do a

thorough testing, and here are the concerns and evaluation of the

researchers that were seen on the performance of the project.

1. The response of the solenoid valve was quite slow. The response time

and the time it takes to act which affects the volume of the cocktail

produced.

2. Devices that pairing to the machine had taken time to initialize Bluetooth

connection and processed the system.

3. Dispensing of Cocktail was done one at a time.

4. Only one user had the control over the machine and preferred the chosen

Cocktail drink.

6. There were limitations in the type of cocktail drink that was produced.

4.2 Physical Appearance of the Machine

The result which was taken from the evaluators and correspondents

were treated statistically and the average was computed to determine the

outcome of the evaluation. The tabulated scores from the 20 evaluators

showed very significant and convincing results.

5.1 Conclusion

In conclusion, the Cocktail machine is capable of dispensing cocktail

drinks that are programmed in its microcontroller. By the use of this

machine, it will help to reduce the manual labor behind the bar counter by

dispensing the ingredients to make drinks. In relation to the objectives and

testing done, the researchers were able to conclude that the machine can

help the bartender in making cocktail drinks. It can dispense drinks chosen

by the user via an android app installed on a device. It is capable of

dispensing close to the exact amount of ingredients for all drinks

programmed in it. The volume dispence drink is taken to account

considering that the highest percentage error obtained from the results of the

design testing was the Boracay cocktail with the highest density of

ingredients milk mix on it and for lowest percentage error was by the Gin and

Tonic Cocktail. The researcher were able to met the

objectives to develop an Automated Cocktail machine and were able to

document the test and evaluation of the project.

For further enhancement for(+63)046-4164324
the improvement,
loc.148 functionalty and to
www.eac.edu.ph/cavite
optimize the resources of the design it could be done by:

 Putting a glass sensor on the dispensing point so that it will not

process cocktail if there is no glass detected.

 Using a more precise valve that will dispence a small amount of

volume of liquid in cubic centimeter (cc).

 Adding an ice dispenser additional to cocktail ingredients.
