Title: Phytochemical and pharmacological screening of selected pericarp extracts and

development of polyherbal formulation

Aim: The main aim of this work is to isolate phytoconstituents from fruit peels and evaluate
their therapeutic efficiency

Objectives

Generally fruit peels are considered useless and thrown as waste, but they are rich source of
vitamins, minerals and many potential phytochemicals. Isolation of therapeutically important
phytoconstituents from biowaste is gaining importance now a day. The main objective of this
study is to isolate phytochemicals from pericarps of four edible fruits and testing their anti
oxidant, anti diabetic , hepatoprotective and neuroprotective activities and development of
polyherbal formulation.

Plan of work

1. Selection of fruits
2. Collection and drying of peels
3. Pulverization of dried peels
4. Extraction
5. Phytochemical screening
6. Pharmacological screening
7. Development and evaluation of polyherbal formulation
1. Selection of fruits
The four edible fruits selected for the study are Custard Apple, Apple, Musk melon and
Kiwi. The fruits were obtained from the market.
2. Collection and drying of peels
The collected fruits were thoroughly washed and dried separately. Then the fruits are
carefully peeled. The collected fruits peels are dried in shade carefully.
3. Pulverization of dried peels
The dried peels are powdered. The powder is preserved for further use.
4. Extraction
The powdered peels are extracted successively with various solvents like hexane,
chloroform and methanol
5. Phytochemical screeing
Preliminary phytochemical screening reveals the presence of various phytoconstituents
a. Custard apple: Preliminary phytochemical studies on different extracts of fruit peel of
Annona squamosa (AS)reveals the presence of alkaloids, proteins, carbohydrates,
flavanoids, glycosides, saponins and tannins.
b. Apple: Preliminary phytochemical studies on different extracts of fruit peel of Malus
pumila (MP) reveals the presence of alkaloids, proteins, carbohydrates, flavanoids,
saponins steroids and triterpenoids.
c. Kiwi: Preliminary phytochemical studies on different extracts of fruit peel of Actinidia
deliciosa (AD) reveals the presence of alkaloids, proteins, carbohydrates, flavanoids,
saponins steroids and triterpenoids.
d. Muskmelon: Preliminary phytochemical studies on different extracts of fruit peel of
Cucumis melo (CM) reveals the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, flavanoids,
saponins and triterpenoids.
6. Pharmacological screening
The extracts of the fruit peels are evaluated for
Antioxidant activity – In vitro
Antidiabetic activity
In vivo
Hepatoprotective activity
Neuroprotective activity
