Task Description:
Students will work in pairs. The assessment task involves identifying occupational orchestration, completing
a thorough activity and occupational analysis on an activity of daily living, and comparing and contrasting
occupational analyses (max 2500 words). This assignment will be completed in four parts over weeks 8-12.
Submission date is Sunday 27th May, 2018 @ 11:59 pm.

OCTY1102 Introduction to Professional Skills in Occupational

Therapy: Threshold Concepts
What are Threshold Concepts?
Threshold concepts are those considered by the occupational therapy profession to be
central to the mastery of occupational therapy. Five threshold concepts have been
identified as pivotal to the practice of occupational therapy and these are integrated
within this course in the
following proportions”

Course Aims
- This course consists of two modules.
- The aim of Module 1 if so students to understand the ways in which intrapersonal and
interpersonal communication and relationships influence occupational performance.
Communication and occupational theories and practices will be integrated and students
will have opportunities to practice their communication skills in small groups and 1:1
situations. Adult teaching and learning strategies will be introduced. Communication
 concepts around therapeutic (intentional) use of self and professional collaboration will
be highlighted.

- The aim of Module 2 is to introduce students to the process of occupational and activity
analysis, for students to understand where occupational/activity analysis sits in the
occupational therapy practice process (e.g. considering the CPPF) and to support
student capacity to analyse occupations and activities as a key skill for occupational
therapy practice.

Learning Objectives
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
1. Identify personal values, beliefs, life experiences and interpersonal characteristics that
impact on communication in various contexts.
2. Demonstrate the ability to engage in insightful self-reflection regarding personal
communication skills in various contexts.
3. Evaluate self and others during interactions while engaged in a range of occupational roles,
and appropriately modify communication style in response to: (a) the needs of the person
one is communicating with, and (b) the occupational context.
4. Demonstrate verbal and non-verbal therapeutic communication skills including listening,
questioning and assertiveness in 1:1 and group situations.
5. Identify the impact of disability on the communication experience.
6. Understand theory supporting therapeutic (intentional) use of self and the principles
underpinning OT practice.
7. Understand the processes of occupational and activity analysis.
8. Analyse occupations and activities and understand how this information might inform
practice aiming to improve engagement in purposeful and meaningful occupations
