Visit Report To Suruhanjaya Tenaga

The primary purpose of the visit is to learn and see the green technologies apply by the
Suruhanjaya Tenaga Malaysia to their headquarters (Diamond Building) which is located at
Putrajaya. The Diamond Building was designed and built on a concept of sustainable and
energy efficiency building, with the following 6 keys elements:

1. Photovoltaic panels
The building is installed with thin film telluride module type photovoltaic (PV) panels,
with a total installed capacity of 71.4 kWp, fed indirectly to the national grid. This total
capacity produced is estimated to cover approximately 10% of the building’s energy
needs
2. Insulated concrete floor
The rooftop is the place which receive most of the heat from the sunlight, hence an
insulated material is apply to the floor of the roof top to reduce the heat transfer into the
building.
3. Automated blinds
The blinds are located at the dome space of the building which act to filter and diffuse
the daylight to provide sufficient daylight for the office around the atrium. Moreover, the
toilet also used motion sensor to control the switching of the lightning system at the
toilet.
4. Roof light through
This design is to reflect the daylight into the building to illuminate the lounge area at the
seventh floor.
5. Water Efficiency
Rainwater is harvested and store in a water tank for toilet flushing and others purpose.
Moreover the water from basin is recycled and filtered for irrigate purpose.
6. Floor slab cooling
Cooling system in the building is provided via radiant cooling slabs that have chilled
water pipes embedded in the concrete slab itself. This is complemented with the
conventional cold air supply system. This purpose can ensure the whole day average
temperature of the building is always around 22-25 Celsius. Hence the motor for cooling
system no need to consume so much energy to pick up the temperature during the start of
office hour.

The green technology that I think can be apply to the building is generate electricity by
walking (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Sp2QiKATwY). The overall concept is
that when we step on the device, piezoelectricity is generated and we can harvest it to
power up small appliances. This concept can be apply at the corridor of the main
entrance since there is quite many people walk in and walk out from the building.
However this technology had its pro and cons as well a lot of improvements are needed.
