Draft A (2014-01-23)
Compared with Issue 02 (2013-11-15) of GBSS15.0, Draft A (2014-01-23) of GBSS16.0
includes the following changes.
2 Overview
2.1 Introduction
In a wireless communications system, multipath propagation is the phenomenon that results in
radio signals reaching the receiving antenna by two or more paths. Multipath propagation
causes the amplitude, phase, and angle of receive (RX) signals to fluctuate, which is known as
multipath fading. It deteriorates the quality of RX signals.
As one of the technologies applied to counteract multipath fading, the diversity technology in
the GSM system consists of time diversity, frequency diversity, and space diversity. With
space diversity, two or more antennas are used at the RX end to receive signals from the same
source. The RX signals are then processed and combined to minimize the impact of multipath
fading.
This document describes the technology that enables a BTS to use two antennas (or two
polarization ends of the same polarization antenna) to receive signals from the same source.
The technology is implemented by the 2-Antenna Receive Diversity feature.
2.2 Benefits
The 2-Antenna Receive Diversity feature improves uplink receive quality, receiver sensitivity,
and uplink coverage for BTSs. As this feature does not require additional hardware
installation or algorithm implementation, it reduces the capital expenditure (CAPEX) for
telecom operators.
NOTE
√ indicates that the NE supports this feature. × indicates that the NE does not support this feature.
3 Technical Description
The 2-Antenna Receive Diversity feature combines the signals from the same source received
by two diversity antennas to counteract multipath interference. Figure 3-1 shows the
implementation of 2-Antenna Receive Diversity.
1. The signal x(k) arrives at diversity antennas over two RX channels, and the two signals
transmitted over these RX channels are identified as r1(k) and r2(k). After being
superimposed on interferences and noises, the two signals are identified as S1(k) and
S2(k).
2. According to its own criterion, the MRC, ICC, EICC, or MICC algorithm calculates the
combining coefficients W1 and W2 and obtains the output signal y(k) using the
following formula: y(k) = W1 x S1(k) + W2 x S2(k)
NOTE
l In Figure 3-1, RX channels 1 and 2 correspond to the main diversity RX channels of a TRX board.
l 2-Antenna Receive Diversity supports four diversity combination algorithms: MRC, ICC, EICC, and
MICC. Each of them has its own combining coefficients W1 and W2.
l For a GBTS, the connection mode between RF modules and antennas is set to the two-
way receive mode by setting SndRcvMode(BSC6900,BSC6910),
SndRcvMode1(BSC6900,BSC6910), SndRcvMode2(BSC6900,BSC6910), and
SndRcvMode3(BSC6900,BSC6910). Additionally, the connection mode of antennas is
consistent with the actual connections.
l For an eGBTS, two receive antennas are configured by setting ANTNUM. The send and
receive mode of the two receive antennas is set to RX_MODE(RX) by setting
ANTTYPE1 and ANTTYPE2.
NOTE
When the value of ANTNUM (the maximum value is 8 ) is greater than 2, set all the following
parameters for each antenna: ANTTYPE1, ANTTYPE2, ANTTYPE3, ANTTYPE4, ANTTYPE5,
ANTTYPE6, ANTTYPE7, and ANTTYPE8.
The MRC, ICC, EICC, and MICC algorithms estimate noises or suppress interferences in
different ways. Therefore, the quality of output signals differs for each algorithm. For details
about these algorithms, see Interference Cancellation Combining Feature Parameter
Description.

When configuring the 2-Antenna Receive Diversity feature on the CME, you must perform a single
configuration first, and then perform batch modifications if required. You must perform a single
configuration for a parameter before batch modifications of the parameter. You are advised to perform
batch modifications before logging out of the parameter setting interface.
To modify objects, such as BSCs, BTSs, cells, and TRXs, in batches, click the icon on
the CME configuration interface to start the batch modification wizard. For the method of
performing batch modifications through the CME batch modification center, press F1 on the
wizard interface to obtain online help.
