ROCHEM ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID

( HEAVY DUTY MARINE CLEANER )

DESCRIPTION
ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID is a BIODEGRADABLE, NON CAUSTIC, HEAVY DUTY ALKALINE CLEANER formulated for cleaning animal and
vegetable oils and fats from tanks with special coatings including zinc etc. This product is specifically designed to improve cleaning efficiency while
overcoming the limitations imposed by caustic based cleaning compounds. ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID is also very effective for cleaning heavy
carbonaceous residue formed by Oil and Dust in the exhaust side of Air Coolers. ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID is also an effective agent for cleaning of
Marine growth and Algae from ship’s underwater hull areas.

ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID adds a substantial degree of safety to the washing operation.
Safety in Application – minimizes the extreme hazards to personnel in handing caustic based materials.
Safety in Preventing Accelerated Corrosion – ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID, in addition to being free of caustic, has corrosion inhibitors
incorporated in the formulation to prevent corrosion of metals such as zinc, aluminium, copper, brass and tin. This is a critical requirement in cleaning
tanks which utilize metals such as zinc in protective tank coatings.

ADVANTAGES
ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID performs four basic cleaning functions:
1. Saponifying Animal and Vegetable Oils and Fats : Saponification is the alkali induced process of splitting animal or vegetable fats to form a
soluble soap. ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID breaks oil into fine droplets which are soponified easily. This is an advantage over caustic which has
a higher percentage of alkali, but which only sponifies the surface of the oil drops thus forming a protective shield around the oil which prevents
complete saponification.
2. Emulsifying Mineral Oils and Grease : Oil which cannot be saponified are removed by emulsification.
ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID homogenizes grease oil and fat particles into small sizes and disperses them evenly in water. Particles are kept
segregated and prevented from recombining and reattaching to the cleaned surface.
3. Dellocculation : Solid dirts are not removed by soponification or emulsification. ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID breaks up agglomerated masses
into very fine particles which repel each other.
4. Suspension and Prevention of Redeposition : ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID prevents redeposition of soil preventing settling and reattachment
to the surface being cleaning. Caustic soda and soda ash do not have these properties and soil settles out promptly.
ROCHEM ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID is to be used by the following methods, where ever applicable.
1. DIP TANK METHOD Simply immerse the cooler to be cleaned into a suitable container filled with 15% solution of ROCHEM’S ALKLEEN
SAFETY LIQUID. The container should be large enough to completely submerge the cooler. Stubborn deposits can be brushed away with a
stiff bristle bush once they have been softned by the chemical solution. It is desirable to heat this solution to about 50°C to get the best results.
The necessary agitation can be achieved by passing compressed air in the tank from down wards to up wards direction. This process should
be continued for about 4 – 5 hours. Then the cooler should be cleaned with fresh water by using high pressure water jet.
2. RECIRCULATION METHOD The same method as above can be adopted. However instead of passing compressed air, the solution should be
recirculated backed to the same tank through a pump which will give the desired agitation.
3. 5% Solution of Rochem ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID in water can be sprayed on cargo hold surfaces / ship’s hulls to be cleaned. Allow this to
react with the dirt, dust, grease, oil, marine growth etc. for 10 minutes and then wash down with H.P water.
4. Our general recommendations for cleaning cargo holds to a degree of cleanliness where no contaminants are to be tolerated in the next cargo
are to recirculate or inject ALKLEEN SAFETY LIQUID at 5% strength in fresh water after the tanks have been stripped and rinsed. ALKLEEN
SAFETY LIQUID can also be applied neat in spray applications followed by a rinse.

A number of variables related to each individual cleaning operation can have a major influence on results. A review of the chemistry of the last
product carried is particularly important in recommending optimum cleaning concentrations, methods of application and temperatures of rinse water
and ALKLEEN solution. ROCHEM SERVICE ENGINEERS are available to review your specific problem and offer recommendations for the best
results at minimum costs.

HANDLING
Non-flammable, non-explosive and non-toxic. Not strongly alkaline; however should be handled with care if there is risk of product splashing into the
eyes; goggles should be worn. Advisable to wear gloves and protective clothing. The use of cold cream based on lanolin or petroleum jelly rubbed
on exposed skin provides sufficient protection.

To the best of our knowledge the information contained in this bulletin is accurate, but since the circumstances and conditions to which it may be used are beyond
