THEME: MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME; (Module 2, Unit 4, UPSTREAM
UPPER INTERMEDIATE)

AIMS:
- to revise vocabulary related to types of houses/areas of a house;
- to practise reading for specific information;
- to practise speaking skills – expressing wishes;

OPERATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the activity all students will:
 identify at least 50% of the information required; (textbook) (2.1)
 write a short paragraph on a given topic; (4.3)
 bring at least three arguments to support a point of view on a given topic; (3.3)

FUNCTIONS:

LEAD IN - ORGANIZING THE CLASS:
- the teacher enters the classroom and greets the students;
- the teacher asks the students who is on duty and who is absent;
- the teacher prepares the materials for the class;
- the teacher checks the students’ homework;

PRESENTATION: the students are told what the new lesson is about and what they
are expected to do in class.

PRODUCTION:

ACTIVITY 1: “THE FOUR MUSKETEERS” Time: 25’


AIM: to revise vocabulary related to types of houses/areas of a house; to practise
reading for specific information;
OPERATIONAL OBJECTIVE: identify at least 50% of the information required;
write a short paragraph on a given topic;
PROCEDURE: the students will work in four groups and each group will have a
different task to fulfill; the students will work on a short text (an extract from Charles
Dickens’ Great Expectations - Mr. Wemmick’s ‘Castle’);
- the first group (THE QUESTION MAKERS) will have to choose the
correct answer for eight questions related to the text;
- the second group (THE CLARIFIERS) will have to match the highlighted
words in the text with their synonyms; the students have a dictionary which
they can use;
- the third group (THE STORYTELLERS) will have to write a short
summary of the extract (5 lines);
- the fourth group (THE PREDICTORS) will have to write a short paragraph
in which to write what they imagine it happens next (5-6 lines);
At the end of the activity the spokesperson for each group is asked to take the floor
and present their solutions on each topic; the rest of the class listen to their
presentation;

ACTIVITY 2: SPEAKING – EXPRESSING WISHES Time: 20’


AIM: to practise speaking skills – expressing wishes;
OBJECTIVE: bring at least three arguments to support a point of view on a given
topic;
PROCEDURE: the students have to identify the words/phrases used in the extract to
describe Mr. Wemmicks’ house; they name each other to answer; then, the students
are given a list of words related to rooms/areas which a house may have; they are
asked to work again in groups, trying to imagine their ‘castle’; they are asked to name
a spokesperson; the spokesperson for each group is asked to take the floor and
present their wishes for the ideal home; the rest of the class listen to their
presentation;

EVALUATION:
PROCEDURE: the students from the other teams ask questions about the topics
under debate and the opinions of their colleagues;

HOMEWORK: My Ideal HOUSE (descriptive paragraph) – 100 words

FEED BACK: the teacher evaluates the students’ performance in class, laying
emphasis on the most interesting points of view and the most powerful arguments. -
