DEFINITION OF CARDIOLOGY

Cardiology (or cardiovascular medicine) Cardiology is the branch of medicine that deals with
problems of the cardiovascular system: the heart, arteries, and veins. The origins of the word
cardiology come from the Greek word “cardia”, meaning heart or inner self.

Cardiology Subspecialties Include

Interventional Cardiology - This subspecialty focuses on interventional procedures such as

removing plaque from arteries using cutting and laser devices, catheterization, stent insertion,
balloon angioplasty etc.

Electrophysiology - Electrophysiology is the study of the heart's electrical systems. One of

the focuses of electrophysiology is the treatment of arrhythmias. These doctors implant and
monitor pacemakers and defibrillators.

Nuclear Cardiology - Cardiologists who specialize in nuclear medicine diagnose and treat
blockages in the coronary arteries.

Echocardiology - These doctors evaluate echocardiogram and transesophageal echo

technology used in patients.

Other subspecialties of Cardiology include Cardiovascular anatomy, Cardiovascular

metabolism, Cardiovascular pathology, Cardiac catheterization, molecular biology of the
cardiovascular system, and cardiovascular physiology.

Cardiothoracic surgery is a separate specialty of medicine from cardiology. Cardiologists

complete an internal medicine residency. Cardiothoracic surgeons are required to complete a
surgical residency.

Choosing a cardiologist depends on the specific needs of each patient. Recommendation by a

family physician or other medical professional and proper insurance coverage will help
narrow the list. It is important that a patient find a cardiologist that he/she is comfortable with
in order to have a good doctor-patient relationship.

PERSONNEL OF CARDIOLOGY
1. Doctors who specialise in cardiology are called Cardiologists
Cardiologist treat people with diseases or conditions of the heart and people who want
to learn the risk factors for heart disease. A primary care doctor or family practice
doctor can work with a cardiology specialist to diagnose, treat, and manage heart
conditions and help people make heart-healthy lifestyle choices. Patients who are at
risk for heart disease or have a history of heart symptoms may see a clinical
cardiologist regularly. People with ongoing heart conditions, pacemakers, or frequent
heart trouble are likely to see a cardiologist with a subspecialty

2. Nurses who are competent in their fields. The poly serves cardiac examination with
ECG tool equipped (Electro Cardio Graphy)

ACTIVITIES OF CARDIOLOGY

PROCESS / STEPS IN CARDIOLOGY

What happens when you meet with the Expert Cardiology
First cardiologist will review your medical history and carry out a thorough physical
examination including blood pressure checks, weight, breathing, and heart rate. Depending
on the symptoms that you experience, additional tests may be performed, including:
 Blood tests - to test whether there are health conditions or other diseases
 Echocardiogram - to describe the structure and function of heart
5

 Stress test – ( Treadmill Test) to measure the work of the heart and its limitations
 Ambulatory ECG - to check for abnormal heart rhythms
 Holter monitoring - an ECG machine that can be taken continuously supervise the
functioning of the heart for a certain period.
 Electrocardiography - to measure the heart's electrical activity.
Results from these tests are then translated to produce an accurate diagnosis and suggest a
treatment plan what is most appropriate to alleviate the existing symptoms. Cardiology
experts can suggest a proper diet, cardiac rehabilitation, intervention-engineering, and
lifestyle changes to prevent a further heart health or worsening of vascular conditions. For the
conditions of the symptoms of more serious, cardiologist may advise you to immediately see
a heart surgeon for the treatment of invasive if necessary.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY

What is a test electrocardiography (ECG)? ECG helps doctors to determine if your heart is
functioning normally. ECG at rest is a recording of the electrical activity of the heart when
the impulse reaches the surface of the body.

Apa yang dimaksud dengan tes elektrokardiografi (EKG)? Pemeriksaan EKG membantu

Echocardiography or cardiac ultrasound tests, or more commonly referred to as Echo, an

examination that provides an overview of your heart was pulsed and can record images
perfectly, which can help your doctor to evaluate your heart health.

What it tests Treadmill (Exercise Stress Test)? This examination can provide information if
you have a cardiac blood supply and oxygen from the circulation times of physical stress that
may not show up on an ECG at rest.
