My Visit to the Early Years Foundation Stage
As an Early Years Governor at our School, I have the privilege of visiting both our
Nursery School and the Reception classes at least once a term. During a recent
visit to the Nursery, I was amazed by the changes that have been made over the
past year.
By the entrance, there is a new parent communication and feedback box which
allows parents to communicate with staff. At the end of the entrance, the corridor
is their new library/sensory room which has a very calming ambience to help chil-
dren with limited communication skills. The room contains lots of resources such as
tactile toys, special lighting, music and colourful picture books.
The nursery provides a friendly, safe, secure and stimulating environment where the
children are happy, confident and settles quickly. This was evident throughout my
visit that the children were all happily engaged in purposeful learning in one of the
activity areas, which ranged from a maths area to small world play. During this visit,
a group of children were playing in the vet role play area, busily engaged in conver-
sation with their peers. One child was getting together the medical supplies, and another was
helping the ‘animals’ settle on the surgical table. Another group of children were gathered at
the Nature table where a Mad about minibeast investigation was taking place. The children
were using fishing rods to hook a minibeast and then check the identification chart to see
what minibeast it was.
The wall displays in the nursery contained lots of children’s work that they had created during
their time at the nursery. A child was at the creative area busily making a glittery picture ready to hang on the wall. The staff
have put up a visual timetable so that the children know what they will be doing that day.
The outdoor play area is a modern, bright, colourful and safe environment and has devel-
oped since my last visit. There is now a lovely woodland area where the children can ex-
plore and within this area is a bug hotel which provides the opportunity for the children to
observe all the little minibeasts that make a home there.
A group of children were playing in the construction area, where they explored the role of
a builder through hands-on experience with child-size equipment and tools. The children enjoyed filling up the cement mix-
er with the bricks and then laying them to build a brick wall. The Nursery staff have also created a new outdoor music and
book corner which looked very appealing with musical instruments attached to the wall
and books in a basket to make them easily accessible to the children. It was evident
throughout my visit that the Nursery has further developed its provision to provide a vi-
brant and nurturing environment for all that attend, where the staff promote children’s
love of learning through their teaching and by providing an engaging learning environ-
ment.
