Double Majors and Dual
Double Majors and Dual Degrees
Degrees
Double Major
Is when there are less than 30 hours difference between the two degree sheets the student is
following. The student will only receive one diploma. But, both majors will be listed on the student’s
transcript. Double majors within the College of Fine Arts are only allowed in the School of Music.

Dual Degrees
Is when there are more than 30 hours difference between two degree sheets. Students can complete
two degrees within the same college or in different colleges. The student will receive a diploma for
each degree and both degrees will be listed on the student’s transcript.

Visit with your Academic Counselor in the Fine Arts Dean’s Office
if you are thinking about either of these options.

Did you know you can track your degree progress online? Degree Navigator is a program used by your
Faculty Advisor to advise you each semester and it is used by the Academic Counselors to clear you for
graduation. You also have access to this website 24/7. You’ll learn more about Degree Navigator in
part 2 of this orientation.

Students must be advised to enroll in summer, fall, and spring classes!

Advising Days
Each school will have a designated Advising Day or Advising Week. A notice will be sent to your OU email letting you
know when this event takes place. You must be advised by your faculty advisor during this time. If you are not
advised during Advising Days, your faculty advisor is not obligated to advise you until three days before the semester
begins. By this time your selection of courses will be very limited, so make sure you are advised during advising days!
If you know ahead of time that you will miss the scheduled advising days, contact your faculty advisor about
scheduling an alternative appointment.

How should you prepare for your advising appointment?

Each school has their own way of conducting advising days. Make sure you read your Advising Days Notice email for
detailed information and instructions!

- Read your degree checksheet and know your requirements. checksheets.ou.edu

- Review your degree progress on Degree Navigator. degree.ou.edu
- Have a suggested plan with the classes you’d like to take.
- Check oZONE to see if you have any enrollment holds. Check early so that you can resolve
any holds before your enrollment window opens.
- Keep all your advising documents in a notebook so everything is in one place and easily referenced.

Advising Form
During your advising appointment your faculty advisor will
complete an advising form for you. On this form they will list
suggested classes for you.

This form has three copies:

white: is your copy
yellow: is the Dean’s Office copy
Courses you should enroll in this semester. Suggested courses if Preferred
pink: is your faculty advisor’s copy Courses are not available.

The yellow copy of the advising form must be delivered to

the Fine Arts Dean’s Office. Once it is received in the Dean’s
Office your advising hold will be removed. You can walk Indication of why this course was preferred or listed as an alternate

your advising form to the Dean’s Office right after your

advising appointment, or your faculty advisor can turn in the
advising form for you. If you are in a hurry to have your
advising hold lifted, walk the form to the Dean’s Office.

Overrides Free resources available to you to optimize your success at OU. Faculty may
specifically recommend you take advantage of these.
If you need permissions (also called overrides) to enroll in
your major classes, your faculty advisor will enter them for
you. Majors in the School of Music will have their
permissions entered by the School of Music Office.
General Education Requirements
Enrolling in Classes

General Education Classes:

Just because a class “sounds” like it
should fulfill a general education
requirement, doesn’t mean that it
will. You must select your general
education classes from the approved
list of courses. It’s easy to look these
classes up in oZONE!
Enrolling in Classes
Enrolling in Classes
Time Conflicts
• Sometimes you may have two classes that overlap by 10 or 15 minutes. As long as you have
the instructors’ permission to leave class a little early, or arrive to class a little late, it is possible
to enroll in both courses. You and the instructor will need to complete a Time Conflict Form
and an Add/Drop form. The Time Conflict Form is available on the College of Fine Arts website
and the Add/Drop Form is available in the main office of each school or the Fine Arts Dean’s
Office. Once you have the instructor’s signature on both forms, enroll in one of the classes on
oZONE, then take the Time Conflict Form and the Add/Drop Form (with the second class listed)
to the Enrollment Services Office in Buchanan Hall 230. Only they can override the enrollment
system for you to enroll in two classes with a time conflict.
Co-requisites
• A co-requisite is a requirement that one course must be taken during the same semester as
another course. A common example is classes that have a lab, you must enroll in the lecture as
well as the lab during the same semester. This requirement is indicated in the Course
Description. You will also receive an error message in oZONE if you try to enroll in one class
without the other. For this reason you must enroll in both classes at the same time with the
CRN number.
Pre-requisites
• A Pre-requisite is when a particular course or requirement must be successfully completed
before enrolling in another course. For example, to enroll in ENGL 1213 (English Comp II) you
must first successfully complete ENGL 1113 (English Comp I).

Enrollment Overload

Students are allowed to enroll in a maximum of

19 hours each fall and spring semester. To receive
permission to enroll in more than 19 hours, you
must complete a “Request for Enrollment
Overload”. This form is available on the Fine
Arts website on the “Student Resources”, “Forms”
page.

To be considered for enrollment overload,

students must have a minimum GPA of 3.00

College of Fine Arts Math Requirement

The College of Fine Arts requires that all declared Fine Arts students complete
their college level math course within the first four semesters of enrollment at OU.

Transfer students or newly declared Fine Arts majors who have not completed
their college level math requirement will have two semesters in which to complete
the requirement.

Students who fail to meet this requirement will be restricted from upper division
Fine Arts courses.

If you have questions about enrolling in math,

contact Elizabeth Nunley in the Fine Arts
Dean’s Office.

Should Know

transcript.

• Weeks 3 through 10 students can drop with an automatic “W”. No refund is issued during this
period of time.

• To drop a class after the 10th week, students must Petition to Drop a Class After the Deadline.
This petition is available on the College of Fine Arts Website under “Student Resources” then
“Forms”. Petitions are only approved for extenuating circumstances with documentation.

• Students are only allowed a max of 5 “W’s” during their academic career at OU.

W’s from other colleges/universities and complete withdrawals

do not apply toward the max of 5.
Graduation Check
• An official graduation check appointment must be completed with one of the Academic
Counselors in the Fine Arts Dean’s Office the semester before you plan to graduate.
This allows you time to address any issues or missing classes that might be discovered
during your graduation check.

• Graduation check appointments should be scheduled online at: iadvise.ou.edu

• You can always schedule an appointment for a pre-graduation check anytime you have
questions about your degree progress.
