MIXING WORKFLOW

1. ORGANIZE TRACKS
Arrange the tracks in the order you prefer
Clearly name and color-code the tracks
Buss and combine tracks if necessary to reduce track count

2. SET UP BUSSES & ROUTING


Create aux inputs for instrument groups
Set the inputs and outputs for each channel
Import your mix FX template
Set up your master fader & print track

3. ROUGH BALANCE and PANNING


Listen to the rough mix (if provided)
Play through the session multiple times and listen
Get familiar with the song
Start setting your rough balance and panning only
Identify what’s special about the song
Identify the artist’s / producer’s vision
Establish your vision

4. THE HEAVY LIFTING
Process each track as needed, one by one
EQ, compression, saturation, etc.
*TIPS:
EQ in mono
Mix mostly at low volume
Avoid mixing in solo, except to fix problems
Continue tweaking until you’re happy with the static balance

5. AUTOMATION
Automate levels throughout the song
Create movement and excitement
Emphasize key moments & dynamics
Make sure the vocal can be heard at all times
Automate FX levels and plugins where necessary

6. SPECIAL FX
Lay in bass drops, swells, long echoes, etc.
Experiment with any FX ideas you have

7. FINISH
Evaluate the mix as a listener
Listen through several times from start to finish
Make minor adjustment as necessary after each pass
*TIPS:
Dim the lights
Turn off the computer screen
Listen in the car
Check on multiple speakers & volumes
Repeat until confident in the mix Print!
