It was the first day of winter break. The leaves were blowing across the street. The air
was cold and crisp. Of course Stacey and I were walking together coming home from school.
“Stacey,” I stated “why do you always try to impress your ballet teacher.”
“Because, I always want to be the best I can be. We went over this already!” she shouted
as her eyes rolled to the back of her head.
“I know but we never get to hang out anymore,” I whined.
“I know, I know, I know,” she stated over and over again. “Well if you want to hang out
then why don’t you have your mom bring you over to my house after your piano lesson.” I never
told Stacey about my mom's new job and about how she is always late. I just always felt insecure
about it.
“What about this weekend. You don’t have a ballet recital and I don’t have a piano
recital.” I shouted in excitement.
“Hey that would work. Then it’s a date.”she proclaimed
We both parted our separate ways with big smiles from ear to ear and skipping into the sunlight.
I could barely stay focused at my piano lessons, I was so excited.
“Little girl why are your hands out of place and your poster off balance. Focused and pay
attention.” scowled my teacher.
“Sorry ma'am” I stated. I didn't even care that my piano teacher was yelling at me. I was
so excited that I couldn’t hold it in and I think that my piano teacher saw that to.
“Come on spill it.” she stated as i heard her squirming in her seat “What’s on your mind.
I know something is going on.”
“Well” I stuttered before bursting with excitement, “My best friend and I are having our
first sleepover since we have been friends. It’s never been able to work out because I either have
piano lessons or she has a ballet recital. I just can’t wait until tonight, it’s going to be the best
night of my life.” I replied with no air left in my lungs.
“Well I can see that you are excited but do me a favor and relax with good posture and
high arched hands and play how I know you can.”
“Yes ma’am” I replied
Luckily I made it through my lesson with out anymore complications. I had good posture,
arched hands, and delicate fingertips as I played the rest of my songs that I was going to play at
my next recital. When I finished I waited outside on the porch like usual as I waited for mother
to come and pick me up. Surprisingly mother was on time and was pulling into the driveway
after only three minutes of me waiting on the porch. As I got in the car mother looked really
excited.
“Mother why do you have that expression on your face.” I asked.
Mother replied, “Why don’t you.”

LA

Once upon a time there was a girl named Stacy and a girl named Jen. They went to the
same school and they both loved to dance. When they met they realized they both had something
in common that made them best friends. Chinese culture. When they got in a huge fight over the
ribbons for dance it made their friendship special.
“Hey” said Jen.
“Hey” said Stacy.
“What are you doing tonight,” said Jen, “Would you like to come over and watch the new
movie Dance Camp with me”
Stacy said, “Omg I have been waiting to watch that movie. I would love to come over. I
will even bring my new ribbons for dance.”
“Perfect,” said Jen, “I will see you at five o’clock at my house, I can’t wait.”
“Me too, Bye” Stacy said.
“Bye!” Jen said.
The night went by and when Jen was doing her homework she realized that Stacy will be
at her house any minute now and her room was a big mess.
“Omg, I have to clean my room or Stacy will think I’m a slob.” Jen said scared
Once Jen cleaned up her room she turned on the t.v. and got the movie set up with
popcorn, drinks, and lots of blankets. Ding, Dong, Ding, Dong.
Jen yelled, “I’ll get it!!!!”
Jen ran downstairs as fast as lightning and opened the door right away. When she opened
it it wasn’t Stacy though, it was the mailman.
“Here you go, I will just need a signature from your mother.” said the mailman.
“Okay. MOM!! The mailman needs a signature from you” yelled Jen.
“Ok, I will be right down,” said Jen’s mom.
Jen went back upstairs to her room and waited for another fifteen minutes when she heard
the doorbell go again, ding dong ding dong. She looked outside the window to see if it was Stacy
before running downstairs to get the door. It was Stacy.
“I’ll get it!!!!” yelled Jen again.
“JEN!!! I’m so happy you invited me,” Stacy said.
“Me too,” said Jen.
“I brought my new ballet shoes with me,” Stacy said, “I can’t wait to show you.”
The two girls went upstairs as Jen gave Stacy a quick tour of her house. Before they
started the movie Stacy brought out her shoes and showed them to Jenn.
“Look at my shoes they are the brand new ones that just came out,” Stacy said, “Do you
like them?”
“Ya I love them I wish I had a pair for myself” said Jen, “Should we start the movie
now?”
Stacy said, “Yes please.”
Jen turned on the t.v. and showed Stacy her room. Then they both layed down and Stacy
put her new shoes on her lap. Jen started the movie and turned off the lights.
“I’m so excited to watch this movie this is going to be amazing,” Stacy said “Thanks
again for inviting me.”
“Ya no problem I’m so happy you could come,” Jen said “Now let’s enjoy the movie”
After half way through the movie Jen realized that Stacy fell asleep and this was her time
to make her move. She reached for the shoes and grabbed them quickly. Stacy didn’t move a
muscle. Jen put them in her closet quickly and didn’t put them under anything because then
Stacy woke up.
Stacy asked, “What are you doing in your closet during the movie??”
“I… um…. just had to put some clothes away quick,” Jen said nervously.
“Okay, but come watch the rest of the movie with me,” said Stacy.
The movie just ended and Stacy seemed a little scared.
“Is something wrong Stacy?” Jen asked.
“Um yes there is something very wrong,” Stacy said. “I LOST MY NEW DANCE
SHOES!”
Jen said, “I will help you look for them.”
After 30 minutes of looking for her shoes Stacy found them in Jen’s closet. She started
crying.
“Why are you crying you found your shoes, right??”Jen said.
With tears falling down Stacy’s eyes she said “I know I found them, but why would my
best friend steal them from me?”
Jen said finally “I stole them for just one night I was going to give them back to you
tomorrow.”
“Why would you even steal them in the first place though they cost a lot of money,” said
Stacy.
“So what your family has a lot of money, mine doesn’t,” Jen said back.
“I saved all of my money to buy them,” said Stacy.
Jen’s mom heard all of the yelling and came into the room to see what was going on.
Stacy said, “Take me home please.”
“Okay...I will,” said Jen’s mom.
That night Jen told her mom what happened and Jenn got her phone and computer taken
away for trying to steal the shoes.
The morning came and Jen was super scared to see how Stacy would act when she tried
to talk to her. Jen got ready, ate breakfast, and walked to school. When she got their Stacy was
standing at her locker on her phone waiting for school to start.
“Hey Stacy,” Jen said.
“Hey,” said Stacy.
Jen said “I’m super sorry It wasn’t right for me to take your shoes.”
“I’m sorry too,” said Stacy, “It wasn’t right for me to over react like that.”
“Best Friends??” Jen asked.
“Best Friends” Stacy said.
Stacy grabs these shoes out of her locker and hands them to Jenn.
“What are these??” Jen asked.
“There shoes that are just like mine but their different colors,” said Stacy.
“Omg thank you so much,” Jen said.
Jen and Stacy became best friends and were the most stylish girls on the dance team with
their matching shoes.
3rd Dialogue
“Jen and Stacy, you will be partners.” said Mrs. Miriam
Stacy could feel Jen glaring at her across the room. Jen didn’t like Stacy, as Stacy took on
the American traditions when she moved to America. Jen had kept her Chinese traditions, and
thought that other Chinese immigrants should do the same.
“Will that be okay?” Mrs. Miriam proded.
“I suppose,” Jenn mumbled under her breath.
“Good!” Mrs. Miriam exclaimed, even though it obviously was not okay with them. Then
to the whole class she explained, “You will have today and tomorrow to work on your project in
school, after that you will all find a way to work on your project after school hours or during a
study hall. This project will be do exactly a week from today. When you have figured out who
you will be doing your biography on, please tell me so that everyone doesn’t do the same
person.”
Stacy walked over to Jen, while Jen sat there pouting.
“So, who do you want to research?” Stacy asked.
“Don’t know,” Jen hissed.
“Well then. Someone is grumpy.” thought Stacy. She thought for a minute and then she
suggested, “How about we do Misty Copeland?” Misty was Stacy’s favorite dancer and she
always wanted to be as good as her.
“I guess,” was all Jen replied with. Then she added, “Who even is that?
Stacy went on to explain the details of Misty’s life. When Jen finally agreed, they went
up to Mrs. Miriam to tell her. She gave them the go ahead and they started their research.
The silence between them was too awkward, so Stacy tried to start up a conversation.
“What do you do at home?”
Without looking up, Jen replied flatly “I take piano lessons.”
Stacy tried again, “You have a sister, right?”
“Yes,” Jen spat, “now leave me alone and do your part.”
Luckily, the bell rang and out they all went. The next day went pretty much the same.
They had divided the parts between the two of them and researched, keeping mostly to
themselves. At the end of the second day, Mrs. Miriam stopped at each group and helped them
plan out their schedule for when they would meet and work on their project. Luckily, Jen and
Stacy had study halls at the same time for the rest of the school days, but they would still have to
finish over the weekend.
“I am available on Saturday all day. We are doing nothing and my Grandma could
probably watch my brother Ian while we work.” Stacy announced.
“I guess that will work for me too.” responded Jen.
“Come over at about 10:00 am? We can work on the project and then eat. You could
probably be home by 12:30 am.”
“Sounds good.” said Jen
They had mostly everything done on their project by the time Saturday came. At 10:00
sharp, Jen’s mom pulled up in front of Stacy’s house. She had a little trouble parking but other
than that she seemed to do pretty well. Jen got out right when her mom stopped the car.
“I know! I will mom!” she yelled as she ran towards the house. She rang the doorbell and
Ian opened the door.
“Hey! You must be Jen. The one from school that is doing the project with Stacy?” Ian
exclaimed.
“Yea that would be me.” answered Jen.
“She’s up in our room. Follow me!” Ian led Jen up the stairs and around the
corner. In their room Stacy was playing with her dolls. They were eating burgers and fries with
little white umbrellas hanging on their chairs. It brought back the memory of her piano teacher’s
umbrella that she had wanted so badly.
“Hey,” Jen said quietly, “I’m ready to finish our project.”
Stacy turned around, surprised at Jen’s manner and replied, “Okay. My computer is over
there on the bed with the poster.” She stood up, walked over, and sat down on the bed. Jen
followed. Stacy was still surprised about Jen’s new attitude, but she didn’t ask any questions. For
the next hour, they worked on their biography.
They finished just before Stacy’s mom yelled up the stairs “It’s time to eat girls!”
“I’ll race you!” Jen laughed as she ran out of the room. Stacy caught up to her on the
stairs laughing. She zoomed past her and into the kitchen, gracefully spinning and sliding into a
chair.
“I won!” Stacy exclaimed
For lunch they ate cheeseburgers and tater tots. Stacy watched Jen from across the table
as she devoured the food.
“That was awesome!” Jen proclaimed. “I’ve never gotten to eat a cheeseburger before.
They are so good.”
Jen and Stacy went up to her room and hung out for the rest of the time.
“I’ve always wanted to be more like American kids. I’ve always wanted a fancy umbrella
to hang around my wrist and I’ve always wanted to eat more “American-like” food.” Jen
remarked.
“Really? You’re kidding, right?” Stacy questioned. It was actually really surprising. It
had never crossed her mind that Jen wanted to be like other American children. Stacy had always
thought that Jen hated it when people wanted “things”. Really she was just jealous of Stacy and
other kids.
When Jen had to leave she said “Bye Stacy! I hope we get to hang out again sometime!”
“Me too! Bye!” Stacy replied. As Jen’s mom drove off, Stacy closed the door and turned
around. She had the biggest smile on her face as she ran upstairs and jumped on her bed. She
rolled over on her back.
“Thank you Mrs. Miriam.” she whispered to the ceiling, “Thank you!”
4th Dialogue
The Mystery of The Ballerina Shoes
“Stacy? Stacy are you there!?” said Jen over the phone. Stacy gazed at the ballet shoes
that she had gotten a few days before. She just couldn’t stop thinking about how wonderful they
were. “Stacy!” yelled Jen, “where are you?” Stacy finally took her attention off the shoes and on
Jen.
“Oh sorry Jen I was just thinking about how amazing my shoes are,” exclaimed Stacy,
“you should really come over and see them!” Jen was also a ballerina, but she didn’t have shoes
as nice as Stacy’s. The way Stacy talked about them made Jen jealous.
“Maybe I will.” answered Jen.
The next day Jen went over to Stacy's house. She brought over her leotard and ballerina
shoes so they could dance together. Jen walked up to the door and right away it opened. Stacy
squealed and hugged Jen as tight as she could. They went up to Stacy's room. Jens eyes
wandered around the room looking for the shoes, but couldn’t find them.
“Where are your shoes?” she asked.
“Oh, I forgot!” said Stacy, “There in the living room, I was just showing my grandmother
them. I’ll be right back.”
“Ok.” answered Jen.
A few minutes later Stacy came back up to her room wearing her leotard and the shoes.
“Wow, there beautiful!” Jen exclaimed.
“Thanks, you should probably go get your stuff on so we can dance.”
“Alright.”
Jen got her leotard and shoes on, but while she was lacing her shoes, she was wondering
how amazing it would be to have Stacy's shoes. Jen came up with a plan and went back to
Stacy’s room. The two danced happily for a few hours and then it was time for Jen to leave.
“Aw but I don’t want Jen to leave, we were having so much fun!” whined Stacy.
“I know honey, but she has to go, her parents said they didn’t want Jen staying any later.”
said Stacy's mom.
“Fine,” Stacy groaned.
Jen went upstairs to gather all her stuff to go. While she was doing so, she saw Stacy's
ballet shoes and remembered her plan. Jen grabbed the shoes quickly and made sure no one saw.
She stuffed them in her bag with all her other stuff and went downstairs. Jens mom was in the
kitchen talking to Stacy's mom. Stacy gave Jen a hug goodbye, and after the adults were finished
talking, she left.
When Jen got home she tried on the ballet shoes, and they fit perfectly. She danced in
them for a little bit and then it was time for dinner. She ate all the noodles and rice that were on
her plate, then went to bed.
~
The next day was Monday. When Jen got to school she met up with Stacy and they talked
for a bit. Then Stacy brought up her shoes. She told Jen that they were missing and asked if she
knew what had happened to them.
“I’m just so worried about them.” said Stacy.
“It was me, I was the one who took your shoes.”Jen confessed.
“But why I knew you loved my ballet shoes but I never knew you would take them!”
Stacy was starting to get angry but Jen didn’t care. Stacy needed to know the truth and had to
deal with it.
“To be honest with you Stacy, I just wanted to try them out and dance in them,”
explained Jen, “But I also wanted to show you that it's not nice to brag, and since that was what
you were doing, I took your shoes to teach you a lesson.”
“That's not what friends do, you could have at least told me you wanted to try them on
and I would have let you. And I didn’t realize I was bragging, I was just so happy with the
shoes.” yelled Stacy.
“I know I should be guilty but I’m not,” said Jen.
“Why? Asked Stacy confused, “this is terrible!”
“They’re just shoes, give me a break.”
“They’re more than that,” said Stacy, starting to calm down, “Lets just talk more after
school.”
“Ok.”
It was the end of the day and they met up in the cafeteria.
Jen said, “Hey.”
“Hi.” Stacy answered.
“Um…” Jen hesitated, “I’m uh, sorry about your shoes.”
“It's fine, at least you’ll give them back. Right?” asked Stacy.
“Yeah, I will.”
Later that day the two met up again at Jen's house. Jen gave Stacy her shoes back and
they danced for a few hours together. They then realized that they can raise money for Jen so
she's able to buy her own, new pair of ballet shoes. The next day they set up a lemonade stand.
They only got a few customers and didn’t raise enough money.
The two realized that if they sold Jens old shoes she would have enough money to get
new ballet shoes. They put up a sign on the lemonade stand saying that they were selling the
shoes. After a few hours a little girl came with her mom and they bought the shoes. Jen and
Stacy were so happy. They finally had enough money to buy a new pair of ballet shoes for Jen.
They went to the mall with Jens mom and bought the same shoes as Stacy's.
“Their wonderful!” exclaimed Jen.
“Now we’ll be able to dance together with the same shoes.” said Stacy.
They ended up having enough money to get the same leotards to. Both the shoes were red so
they decided to get beautiful red dresses to dance in. They also decided to join a dance recital.
They practiced together for a few days and then it was time for the recital. They were
amazing and got roses and got to go get ice cream afterwards. They then became the best of
friends, even better than before.

The End
5th Dialogue
During her piano lessons, Jen was given the chance to play the piano for a ballet number by
some girls her age.
“Your skill has improved plenty enough for you to play this song for them,” said Miss
Crosman with a huge grin on her face.
“I don’t know,” answered Jen, “I buckle under pressure easily.”
Jen was happy at the idea, but didn’t want to embarrass herself. It had to be soft and
smooth. While under pressure though, it’s hard for her to keep her hands steady enough to not
slam the keys. It’s hard for Jen to back out of this while her mom is sitting and listening in the
background.
“That’s a wonderful idea!” exclaimed her mother from the other room, “Just think of all
the nice girls you’ll meet.”
Sheepishly Jen whispered “Do you really think they will accept me, even if I mess up?”
“Of course they will,” answered Miss Crosman, “there’s one girl I know you’ll love.”
With that last comment, Jen went home with her mother to practice on her own. She sat in the
car, wondering about all the girls reactions when they hear her play, Will they help me, or just
watch and laugh, wondered Jen.
“Are you alright, you look ill?” asked Jen’s mother.
“I’m alright,” answered Jen with as much confidence she could muster, “this song should
be a piece of cake, right?” While in her head, the same question repeated, Am I really going to be
okay.

“I heard we are going to have a girl our age play the piano,” said one girl.
“I hope she’s nice,” answered another, “I love making new friends!”
All the girls were on their break. Most sat in a circle and gossiped, others had snacks and
drinks. Even though Stacy was gone for a while, she still was able to jump right back into
practice because of her own practice. She loved sitting in the circle and listening to people
gossip, she felt like she was where she belonged. She wanted to know more about the piano girl,
so she got up and went to their ballet instructor.
“What’s the name of our new piano player?” asked Stacy.
“Her name is Jen,” she answered, “I had a quick meeting with her to see if she could play
the song well enough, and well she could. I’m very excited to hear her play while you all dance.”
I’ve never heard her speak so highly of a piano player before, thought Stacy. In three
days, they would meet Jen. She was very excited herself, because she also heard rumors that she
was from China. With her grandmother from Hong Kong, that meant a lot to Stacy. Either way,
she was excited to talk to her.
“We’re here,” announced Jen’s mother, “are you ready?”
“I guess so,” replied Jen quietly.
The building looked nice, and the girls inside did look her age. Yet she still felt like her
heart was beating at a crazy speed. With a hand over her heart, it felt like her ribs were shaking.
With a deep breath, they both walked into the door.
“Welcome Jen,” the instructor basically screamed, “would you like me to have them all
line up so they can say their names?”
Jen’s eyes were focused on the inside of the building, taking in all the furniture that was
scattered in the room.
“Sure,” Jen finally replied.
After all of them said their names, Stacy walked up to Jen and personally introduced
herself. The instructor told Jen where the piano was, and that they were going to practice right
away.
Even with tension in her muscles, Jen was able to play the song with ease. Her fingers
never stumbled, they never twitched, and they played as smooth as butter.
After the practice, Jen was approached by all of the girls. They wanted to sit down in a
circle with her, and talk about each other. The one that she became friends with the most was
Stacy.
On the way back home, Miss Crosman texted Jen with this message, “Did you like
Stacy?”
6th Dialogue
“The solo of the week goes to…Stacy!” exclaims Madam Fushi.
“Thank you, thank you, no autographs,” rejoices Stacy. Stacy has been waiting for this
moment ever since she walked into the ballet room. Stacy runs up to Madam Fushi and says,
“Thank you so much Madam Fushi, I won’t let you down!”
“I know you won’t sweetie, you’re amazing and have been waiting for this your whole
life!” says, Madam Fushi. Madam Fushi has had her eye on Stacy ever since she first saw her
dance. She knew from the beginning that Stacy had lots of potential.

“Thanks to all her hard work and dedication throughout the years the vote on who will be
playing at the big ballet shows goes to Jen!” says Miss Crosman. “It’s next week on Thursday so
we all expect you to work hard on this, good luck!” exclaims Miss Crosman.
“Thank you all so much for voting for me and believing in me, I promise I won’t let you
down!” Jen replies.

It's the day of the big ballet show and both Stacy and Jen have been working very hard on
their special moment. “Stacy, you’re on in nine minutes so please change into your tutu and do
your stretches,” Madam Fushi says sternly.
“Jen you go on in two minutes so please make sure you have all your music with you,”
says Miss Crosman.
Jen runs across backstage to get her music from her backpack in the hallway right outside
the theatre. She wasn’t looking where she was going and tripped over Stacy who was stretching
on the floor. “Oh my goodness, I am so sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going, are you
alright?” asks Jen.
Stacy replies, “Yes, I’m fine, thanks for asking, but it’s more like are you ok, you tripped
and fell down?”
“Thanks for the concern and yes I’m fine…oh my goodness are you the ballet soloist this
week?” questions Jen.
“Yes I am,” says Stacy, “are you the pianist?”
Jen replies, “Yes, and I guess I should introduce myself, my name is Jen, what’s yours?”
“I’m Stacy and it’s very nice to meet you,” remarks Stacy.
“I’m sorry but that’s my cue and I still have to get my music, good luck out there and
maybe we could talk afterwards?” asks Jen.
Stacy replies, “Thank you and yes thats sounds wonderful, good luck to you too!”
Jen goes on and starts playing for all the other dancers while Stacy was waiting backstage
for her cue. Stacy walks out in her tutu and starts dancing. She is dancing to the song, Dance of
the Sugar Plum Fairies while Jen plays the piano.
Stacy goes to do her finale, the most amazing twirl. She goes up gracefully like a
princess, but comes down and falls hard on her elbow and ankle. Jen immediately rushes over to
her to make sure she’s ok. “Ow, ow, ow” cries Stacy, eyes full of tears.
“Miss Crosman! Stacy needs help, she’s hurt,” yells Jen. Miss Crosman and Madam
Fushi hurry on stage and kneel next to Stacy.
“Oh no, this doesn’t look good.” says Madam Fushi, “I’ve seen this before, it looks like a
broken ankle.”
“A broken ankle?” cries Stacy voice full of pain. Thankfully there's a doctor in the crowd
and she comes over to take a look.
“Ok so Stacy what we're gonna do is help you up and see if you can stand and hopefully
get you walking.” says Doctor Davis.
“I don’t know it hurts really bad,” says Stacy.
“I believe in you, you can do it, we’ll help you too,” replies Jen.
“Now Stacy just work with me, I’m gonna help you up and let me know if anything starts
hurting,” says Doctor Davis. “Good, good, now that you're up hows the pain?” asks Davis.
“It still hurts a lot,” Stacy replies.
“It’s going to for a while,” replies Doctor Davis, “but know that you can somewhat stand
Madam Fushi and I are gonna help support you while you try your best at walking.”
“Ow,” cries Stacy while falling to the ground. Stacy’s mom runs on stage and decides to
take her to the car and take her to the hospital.
Once at the hospital Stacy waits in the waiting room until the doctor calls her name.
“Stacy, follow me,” says Doctor Meyerson.
Stacy’s mom picks her up and carries her following the doctor. “Sorry for the wait it has
been a very busy day,” apologizes Meyerson.
Twenty minutes later the doctor decides that Stacy needs x-rays just to make sure. “Stacy
you have a broken ankle and will need to be on crutches for the next 6 to 10 weeks,” says Doctor
Meyerson.
“So I can’t do ballet?” questions Stacy.
“I am afraid not until you are off crutches and fully healed,” replies Meyerson.
Two days later Stacy’s decides to go to ballet class even though her ankle is broken, to
support her friends and to just get out of the house, considering its summer and she can’t do any
other sports and activities.
“I am so sorry this happened to you Stacy,” says Madam Fushi, “you do not deserve
this.”
“Thanks Madam Fushi, but I guess this could be a sign because everything happens for a
reason,” replies Stacy.
During the middle of the ballet class Jen comes to talk to Stacy. “I knew I would find you
here,” says Jen.
“Well this is my passion so ya, and what are you doing here?” asks Stacy.
“I came by to see if you still wanted to talk because after what happened we didn’t get
to,” replies Jen.
Stacy replies “Actually that sounds very nice right now, we could meet after this if your
available.”
“Yes, where would you like to meet,” asks Jen.
“Well my mom needs to go to Target and get a few things so we could meet there after if
that works with you and get Starbucks,” says Stacy.
“Yes, that sounds good,” says Jen.
Jen stayed the rest of the class and talked with Stacy. Once it was over they met up at
Target and go Starbucks and sat down to talk. They got to know each other and were looking
forward to seeing each other again soon.
7th Dialogue
Feb. 8, 2018
Language Arts

Once, there was a ballerina and a Chinese girl that went to the same school. The
ballerina’s name was Stacy, and the chinese girl’s name was Jen. Jen, used to live in China, but
moved to California for a better opportunity for her family. One day they met at school and they
started talking to each other.
“Hey! You must be the new girl,” said Stacy, “I’m Stacy. What’s your name?”
“Um… Jen,” she said in a quiet voice.
“Welcome to our school Jen. So far you and me are the only Chinese people here. I don’t
really have a lot of friends here. People think I’m weird, but that’s ok. Maybe we can become
friends.” For a minute Jen looked up and then quickly put her head down again.
“Sure,” Jen’s voice started to lighten up a bit, “what period do you have first?”
Stacy replied, “Social Studies.”
“Omg me too!” Jen exclaimed, “I hope we can can sit together.”
“Same,” Stacy exclaimed.
“Want to walk to class together?” said Jen just a little more softer.
“Sure!”
After they got done with their first period it was on to the next one, all the way until
lunch. At lunch they even sat by each other. Both of them started to talk about things that they
like.
“I like playing the piano,” exclaimed Jen, “I have it three nights a week.”
“Wow! I don’t play a musical instrument, but I dance. The type of dance I do is ballet,”
Stacy said it a little sadder this time.
“Do you take lessons?” Jen questioned.
“I used to, but when my grandma moved into the house we couldn’t afford lessons
anymore. Now, my mom is working and my grandma is watching my brother and I, so I will get
to be back in lessons soon.”
Coincidentally, Jen had almost the same story, “My mom works too! Just not for the
same reason. There is one other chinese family that moved here one year ago, and they don’t
have a lot of money. So, my mom helps with their financial problems by working to give them
money.”
“That so cool,” Stacy said, “do you play a sport?”
“No, but ballet sounds fun! Is it easy?” Jen also questioned.
“It can be difficult at sometimes, but mostly it is very fun! Would you like to come over
to my house and try?” Stacy replied ever so calmly.
“I would be glad to! It works out great because I don’t have piano tonight,” Jen was so
excited she could barely wait.
After school, Stacy’s grandma picked them up.
“How was your guys’ day?” grandma asked.
“Good,” said Stacy, “it turns out that we have the same classes together.”
Grandma replied, “Cool!”
When they got to Stacy’s house they rushed up to her room and got the ribbons. Stacy put
them on and started to dance.
“Those are so cool! You are such an amazing dancer!” Jen started to get jealous of Stacy
and her cool ribbons, “Can I try?”
“What if you come over Wednesday and we can watch a movie and dance?” Stacy
humbly said.
Jen got a little frustrated, but calmed herself down right away, “Can it be a ballerina
movie?”
“Of course! I just got a new movie that we can watch.”
“Perfect. My mom is here, see you tomorrow!” Jen said in a rushed way.
When Jen got home she started to work out her evil plan. “I would dance for a little bit
and then ask her to watch the movie. Of course she will say yes. When we start to watch the
movie I will say I need to go to the bathroom and then I will do what needs to be done,” this was
just Jen talking to herself. Then she told her sister the plan.
“If you tell Stacy then you won’t get to play with the ribbons and I will take your teddy
bear away,” Jen demanded.
Mona shouted back, “Then I will just tell mom!”
“Dare you!” Jen gave her the stare back.
The next day, Jen barely talked to Stacy. The only timed that they talked was during
lunch and while they were waiting for Stacy’s grandma to pick them up.
“I’m so excited!” Stacy exclaimed.
“Me too,” Jen said a little suspicious, “when is your grandma coming?”
“Soon. Is everything ok? You have been acting a little weird lately.”
Jen quickly replied, “Yeah, I’m fine. Just some family issues.” Stacy new that she was
lying but didn’t comment on it.
The only thing that Stacy said back was, “If you need me just know that I am here for
you.”
Before Jen could reply, Stacy’s grandma pulled up. They walked into the car together,
but when they got home Stacy helped her grandma, while Jen held the door.
“Lets go to your room!” Jen acted so happy, “maybe I can try on the ribbons.”
Stacy replied rapidly, “Of course, I did promise you a turn the next time that you were
over.”
Jen put on the ribbons. Instantly, she felt magical. “These are amazing!” she told Stacy.
“That’s why,” Stacy gulped before finishing, “I love them so much.” Right there Jen felt
a little gult about her plan. As Jen started to dance, she started to stumble and then fall.
“It takes practice,” they both said.
Jen started to fall more and that got her aggravated, “Uhg, this is so hard.”
“Its ok you’ll get the hang of it,” Stacy tried to cheer her up, but it didn’t work.
“Can we just watch the movie know,” Jen tired to say that as polite as possible.
Stacy tried not to sound bratty, but it might not have worked, “Sure, I picked the movie
Leap because it has ballet in it. Maybe you can get a few pointers off of the movie.”
They set the ribbons on her bed stand right next to her bathroom. “Perfect spot for me to
take them,” Jen whispered to herself.
“What?” Stacy got all confused.
Quickly Jen said, “Nothing. Let's go start the movie!”
Half way through the movie Jen needed to go to the bathroom. “I’m going to run to the
bathroom,” she said.
When she was in the bathroom she snuck into Stacy’s room and grabbed the ballerina
shoes. All of a sudden she heard a ring from her phone. Her mom texted her saying, I’m here to
come pick you up. Please meet me outside.
Jen put the shoes in her bag and darted to the front door.
“Sorry I have to leave so early. My sister doesn’t feel good,” Jen made up a pretty good
excuse.
“It’s ok,” Stacy said all sad, “maybe another time.”
When Jen got home she went up to her room and put on the ribbons. After watching half
of the movie it really helped her practice. While she is practicing Mona comes in and sees the
shoes.
“Can I try?” Mona says.
“No,” Jen demanded, “my ribbons.”
“Fine,” Mona said as she went out of the room.
The next day Mona went up to Stacy and told her about the ribbons. Stacy couldn’t
believe it. “That’s why she has been acting weird lately,” she said
After school Stacy went over to Jen and demanded her shoes back.
“No, finders keepers,” snotty Jen said.
“They were my shoes first.”
“Well,” Jen replied, “they are mine know.”
Once Jen said that, Stacy’s face turned as red as a tomato. They got into a huge fight.
Punching, screaming and kicking. This got them suspended for three days. Instantly the girls felt
bad and apologized to the teachers, students and family members.
“I’m sorry,” Jen said first.
Stacy stayed silent for a while, but then said, “Why didn’t you just tell me?”
“My mom would never get me something like that, and I got jealous,” Jen said sadly.
The next week they arrived to school and Stacy gave Jen a big box.
“Is this what I think it is,” Jen started to cheer up.
“Yep, your own ribbons.”
“Yay,” Jen was so happy, “thank you.”
“No problem. Next time you like something of mine, try not to steal it.”
“I’ll try not to,” Jen jokingly said.
Weeks and weeks after, they became the best friends and started to practice everyday.
Soon they went to an academy together and became the best dance duos ever.

Jen
My name is Jen and my best friend is Stacy. We do a lot together. I met
her after I got in a car crash with my mom. Her and her mom were driving next to
us when it happened. Basically our car was crushed and they came out to help
us, but my mom got really hurt so they had to call an ambulance so we went
home with Stacy and her family.
The first thing Stacy said to me was,”Are you okay?”
“Ya, I think so,” I replied,” but my mom looks hurt.”
After that, I threw a white umbrella that I got down the sewer for reasons
that are for another time. Anyway, the ambulance came and I was super worried
about my mom. I had to ride home with Stacy because my dad had just left for a
business trip. For some reason I had a hunch that Stacy didn't like me just by the
way she was talking. But her mom was really nice.
When we got to her house, we called my dad and he started on his way
home but he wasn’t going to be here until tonight. So I had to stay there for a
couple hours. So then we went to her room and we got to know each other a little
more and she wasn’t that bad. We just played at her house until my dad came to
pick me up and we were going to go the hospital to see my mom and she was
fine she just hit her head pretty hard.

Stacy
I first met Jen when she got in a car crash. It's kind of a weird story. Her
and her mom got in a really bad car crash so she had to come to my house until
her dad came home from a business trip. She goes to my school but it is a big
school so i don't see her a lot, she’s not in any of my classes, and I’ve never
talked to her. My mom and I were driving next to her when it happened. It was a
really big crash, so we rushed out of the car and went out to help them. My mom
called the police.
I walked up to stacy and said, “ Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I think so, but my mom looks pretty hurt,” she replied.
Then the ambulance came and took
After that, she came to our house and we got to play at my house until her
dad came. The next day at school, I saw her and she said her mom just bumped
her head. But she is okay now and me and Stacy are really good friends.

A Shoe Robbery
One day, in school, Stacy said to her friend Jen, “You should join ballet with me. You
know a lot of people in it, and it is a lot of fun.”
Jen always tries to fit in, so upon hearing that, she responded, “That sounds like a blast! I
will join next week when the practices start.”
On the first day of practice Jen remarked, “Wow, this is a lot of fun, the other kids were
really nice and friendly to me.” Then, she said, “Where did you get those dance shoes, They look
so nice and soft.”
“I got these from Target,”, Stacy answered, “we received an email for a five dollar
coupon a week ago.”
“Well after this, I’ll go to target and get some shoes with my piggy bank money.” Jen
exclaimed.
Later, at Target something odd happened. When Jen got back, she told Stacy, “We were
robbed!”
“Well what happened?” She said, “Were their guns involved?”
Jen replied, “No, the nice shoes were just stolen. We picked up the shoes from target,
bought them, and put them in the trunk, but when we got home, they weren't in there!”
“Wow. I never heard of a shoe robbery before,” said Stacy “I can help you try to find
them.”
Jen replied, “Yes, that would be very nice of you.”
“I’ll look in the store parking lot, it is close to my house,” she said, “you look around
your neighborhood”
While searching, Stacy came to jen saying, “I couldn’t find any shoes in the parking lot. I
will help you look.”
“Ok,” Jen said, “you go east, I’ll go west.”
Later that night, after a long day of searching, and no luck, they both went home. When
Jen came home, she saw the shoe box, containing the shoes, sitting on the table. “Mom!” she
shouted, “Where did you get these.”
Mom answered, “Well, when I was going back to work, I saw a tall man sitting with the
box in his hands. I stopped and asked where he got them, and he said he saw them falling out of
a minivan. I told him they were your shoes, and I took them back.”
“Holy cow!” Jen said with joy, “I can’t believe they aren’t lost! Thank you so much for
getting them.”
“You're welcome sweetie. I love you enough to to that,” said Mom.
“I love you too,” Jen exclaimed, “and I can’t wait to use these at ballet class tomorrow.”

The next day, at ballet, Stacy told Jen, “It’s ok Jen, we can keep looking for the dance
shoes today,”
“Actually Stacey,” Jen said, “We don’t need to.”
“What!” she yelled, confused.
“My mom found them.” Jen told the full story.
Stacy remarked, “Thank God! I didn’t want to spend my day looking again!”
Jen and stacy ended up being the best in their class, They always said It was the luckey
shoes.

“Hey,” said Stacy. (as her and Jen walked into school)

“Sup,” Jen replied.

“I can’t wait for the favorite hobby project, I am definitely going to chose ballet if I can,”
said Stacy. “What topic are you going to do?”

“I think I am going to do piano, I just learned a new song and I want to write about that.”
replied Jen.

“What’s the name of the song, I wonder if I've heard it before?” said Stacy.

“It’s called River Flows In You by Yiruma,” said Jen.

“Yeah I haven’t heard it before but I bet you are great at it,” Stacy said. “Whenever I hear
you play you are amazing.”

“Thanks,” Jen said.

When they got to school they went to their home room and sat down for attendance.
Being the only two Chinese kids in the school the teacher thought that they should sit together.
Jen and Stacy didn’t know why but since they were good friends they were totally fine with the
arrangement. Since they were first in the line of desks they got to choose their topic first.

“What topic would you like to do Stacy?” asked their teacher (Phil Swift).

“I would like to do the topic of ballet,” replied Stacy

Now Phil Swift said, “What topic would you like to do Jen.”

“I would like to do the topic of piano, I also have a new song I can play for you when i
am done with my project,” said Jen.

As the rest of the class got their topics Stacy and Jen started to work. Jen thought that she
would start about the history of piano and then shift it to what she liked to play. Stacy wrote
about kinds of ballet moves and dances. Which took a while considering that there were lots of
things you could do in ballet. After a few weeks of doing their project they were finally ready to
present.

“Today I will be playing River Flows In You by Yiruma,” said Jen.

Jen played her songs very well that day then proceeded to do her history of piano section.
After Jen, Stacy was the next to present. She taught the crowd about the dances and dance moves
of ballet. After that she even brought in her Ballet shoes to show her class. The next day the
teacher gave them their grade. He was very proud of them considering they both got a 100%.

Once upon a time, there were two little girls. One was called Jen and the other Stacy. Jen
loved to play the piano and was very good at it. Stacy was an expert in ballet and loved to do it,
too. They met each other at a Music and Dance School, and they instantly became best friends.
One day Stacy said to Jen, “What if we made a living out of this.”
Jen was shocked and said, “What do you mean?”
“I mean think about it with our expertise we could have me on the piano, of course you
and a crew of other ballerinas, and travel the country putting on our show,” Stacy replied.
“Yes I think that might actually work,” said Jen. From that day on they agreed that they
would continue to progressively get better at their hobbies.
Ten years later they met in San francisco to try to start their business. They met at a
coffee shop called the Busy Bean; they thought that coffee made them think.
“Where should we perform?” said Jen, “Where will we get the money?”
“We could try to get a loan from the bank,” said Stacy.
“How much should we get,” said Jen
“We can start with 5,000 dollars,” said Stacy, “That should be enough to get us a few
shows and to advertise our show.”
“Where should we have our first show?” Jen said to Stacy.
“We can try the Opera house down the street.” said Stacy.
“That will be the Grand Opening of the J & S” said Jen. At that moment they shook
hands and agreed on that proposition. At the beginning of the first show Stacy said to Jen “Are
you ready?”
Jen said “I think so, but I am really nervous.”
Stacy said “ I think you will do great, good luck.”
“Thanks,” said Jen.
The first show was a huge success, they sold more than 200 tickets. That one show alone made a
total of 947 dollars.
Jen said, “You did fantastic!”
“Thanks, you did amazing as well. The way you danced is like watching art in motion,”
said Stacy.
“And the way you play is better than pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving!” said Jen.
“Now you're really making me blush,” said Stacy. They both had a good laugh over this
and as the years went on and on the success continued to come. They became rich and loved to
put on shows for people. They put on all kinds ballets anywhere from The Nutcracker to
Cinderella and they lived happily ever after.

knows her mom will be late because she is at work and is too embarrassed to tell her
new friend Stacy.
“Hey dear,” Stacy's mom states “How was your day?”
Stacey replies “Fine, I guess. I met this nice girl at school today. The only
problem is that she doesn't like talking about her mom; it's kinda weird.”
“Well don't judge, I don't think you would like to openly talk about your grandmas

The White Ribbon
“Oh no, this ballet competition needs a live piano player! What am I going to do?” Stacy
complained.
“Well my coworker has a daughter that plays the piano,” said Stacy’s mom.
“I guess that will work,” Stacy said thankfully.
Then Stacy’s mom said, “Ok I will get it set up for later this week.”
After a day or two Stacy finally meet her pianist and she introduced herself, “Hi, my
name is Jen.”
Stacy also introduced herself, “Hi my name is Stacy, and thank you so much for playing
at my competition.”
Stacy handed Jen the music and asked her, “Do you think you can handle this.”
Jen replied, “Yeah, I think I can manage.”
They worked for weeks on this routine, and they started to really get good at it they
improved it by working through each other’s flaws and becoming really good friends in the
process. “I’m really nervous,” Jen said.
“Your nervous, imagine how I feel,” Stacy joked.
They laughed as if they had known each other for lifetimes. “Stacy and Jen, five
minutes!” the stage crew yelled.
“Ok, I think I’m ready,” Stacy stated.
They took the stage and they were magnificent. Stacy danced like a leaping gazelle. Jen’s
fingers moved across the piano like a cheetah on a grassland. “You were great,” Stacy
proclaimed to Jen.
“You were better,” Jen said ecstatically.
They waited franticly backstage to find out the winners of the competition.
‘In third place Becky and Nicky,” the head judge said, “in second place is Meghan and
Mary.”
The tension was unbearable and because of that they both wondered, “Were we good
enough to place?”
After that thought they herd, “In first place Stacy and Jen!”
They jumped around backstage in celebration and ran onto the stage to collect their
trophy.

“Is that you Stacy?” Jen exclaimed to her long lost friend at the airport.
“Jen, how good it is to see you!” replied Stacy, “How have you been lately?”
“I’ve been good Stacy, but right now I don’t really have time to have a good
conversation. I must be on the bus in 10 mins to get to where I’m staying.”
Jen and Stacy have just arrived in San Francisco from China, don’t speak great english,
and have no money.
“Where are you staying? I want to stay in touch, as I don’t have any other friends here in
America,” said Jen.
“My cousin Jim has offered me a place at his house, so I’m staying there,” Stacy
answered.
Stacy’s cousin moved to America just a few years prior, and has gotten established in a house he
bought. On the contrary, Jen has no place to live as of yet, and is waiting to get on a shuttle to the
cheapest hotel she could possibly find.
“So Jen, where are you staying?” Stacy questioned.
“I don’t have a place yet, so I booked a cheap hotel to stay at. That is why I need to get
on the bus in a few minutes here,” Jen responded, “the real problem is that I don’t have anywhere
to stay after I have to leave the hotel.”
“I wonder if Jim would let you stay at his house, especially if you tell him the situation
you are in?” asked Stacy.
Jen said, “If he would that would be great. I really don’t have the money to stay at the
hotel for much longer than I already am.”
“Do you have a phone I can borrow to call Jim?” Stacy inquired
“I was just about to ask you the same question,” said Jen “Additionally, I don’t even have
enough money to use one of those public payphones.”
It was at this time that Jen figured out that she might not have anywhere to live in 2 days.
“Let’s just go to his house and see if he’ll you stay,” said Stacy.
After a quick walk Jen and Stacy were at the airport’s bus depot. There were a couple of
destinations that were free to ride, and luckily Jim’s house was very close to one of them. After a
quick knock, Jim came right out.
“Hello Stacy! How are you? Did you have good travels?” Jim questioned quickly.
“Hello, good, and yes. Hey, my friend from elementary school has also come to America,
and needs a place to stay. I was wondering if you had any extra space for her.” said Stacy.
“Well, I can tell for one thing that I only have a twin bed in my room, and in your new
room, so she wouldn’t be able sleep in either of those rooms. However, I do have a big couch
downstairs if she is fine with that.”
“That’s great! Thank you Jim!” exclaimed Stacy
“Jen, did you hear that? Jim has a place for you to stay in!” yelled Stacy
“Pleasure to meet you Jim, and thank you so much. This is going to help me a lot.” Jen
said.

“Nice to meet you Stacy my name is Jen and I really have to go but maybe I will see you

They both went their own ways. Then the next day neither of them saw each other
because Stacy was new and just getting used to her schedule.
“Hey Stacy,” Said Jen “what are you doing this weekend?”
“Nothing much,” said Stacey. “ Why, what are you up to?”
Jen then replied,“ I am not doing much mostly helping around the house helping my
mom. But I am going to go to skate country on Saturday which is tomorrow I was going to see if
you wanted to tag along brother Ian maybe?

Grandma and Stacy Talking

“Were you born in China?” asked Grandma.

“ Yah I was, we moved here when I was 7,” told Stacy.
“I had a hard life when I lived in China,” said grandma.
Stacy asked,” what was so hard about your life in China?”
“Chinese foot binding,” she replied,” it was the worst experience of my life. And
my feet are still like that to this day, i am still in pain.”
“That must have been terrible. Why did they do that to you?” asked Stacy.
Grandma replied,” They didn't just do it to me, they did it to every girl, they
thought it was the answer to beauty.”
“Who was they?” asked stacy.
“It was the Chinese government, they thought it would make us more beautiful,
that's why i took the ribbons away from Jen, I didn't want her to go through what i did,”
said grandma. “ Are you okay, I heard you got into a car crash.”
“I'm fine, i was just trying to hide something from my mom, I didn't want her to
know, “ answered Stacy.
I tried to hide something from my mom, but I learned that you should just trust
your mom, she knows best, it won’t be the end of the world,” said Grandma.
“Thanks, i needed that, but the thing i was hiding, i don't have it anymore, i threw
it down the sewer,” said stacy.
“Why did you do that?” asked grandma.
“ I was scared that my mom was going to get mad for taking something that
wasn't mine,” said stacy.
Grandma replied,” don't hide anything, your mom would be nice about it, just let
her know what happened.”
“Did your mom ever work?” asked Stacy.
“ No she didn’t, does your mom work?” asked grandma.
“ Yah,” said Stacy, “ my dad didn't want her to because it was against chinese
culture or something.”
Grandma said,” it is, nobody’s mom ever worked in china, but you now live in
america, it's new things, you don't have to do the same things.”
“It was good talking to you,” said Stacy.
“Maybe we can talk again at some point,” said grandma, “ your family should take
a trip to china, it would be good for you.”
“ I’ll try to get my parents to do that for us, is it cool there,” asked Stacy.
“ Awesome, it will be everything you think it is,” Said grandma.

“ Ok ladies”, said Madam Oblomov, “We have a new student in the room. Her name is
Jen,” she pointed to Jen, “would you like to introduce yourself to the class?
“Sure”, Jen replied, “um, so my name is Jen and I decided to try doing dance-
Madam Oblomov cut her off, “no honey this is ballet, a type of dance not dance.”
“Sorry, ballet” she replied, “ So anyway I’m, starting ballet because my old after school
activity that I did closed down after a lot of people stopped playing piano.”
“ Why are people stopping playing piano,” asked Stacy.
“ I don’t really know but I loved playing, so I hope that ballet is just as fun.”
“Thank you Jen, now girls we are going to start by showing Jen some of the skills that we
have learned.” said Madam Oblomov, “ Can I have a volunteer to help Jen learn the positions?”
“Ooooo I will” replied Stacy
“Ok thank you Stacy, now the rest of you are going to start learning the new dance that
we are going to be performing in the next recital.”
Stacy walked over to Jen and showed her to the practice room
“Now for the first position you are going to put your heels together and put your arms in
a circle that doesn’t touch at your sides, like this.”
“ Um, ok, put your heels together and put arm in a circle that doesn’t touch,” Jen repeated
to herself. “ Like this?” she asked as her feet were as wide apart as China and America and her
arms were as round as a square.
“ Almost, you just have to bend your arms a little bit more so that it is more of a pointed
circle, Stacy said.
“Ok, like this”, Jen asked
“Yeah, Perfect” Stacy replied, “ Now lets try position two”
“Ok, How do you do that,” Jen asked
“Oh yeah, I forgot that you didn’t know how to do it yet sorry.” Stacy said embarrassed
“Your, good”, Jen said
Ok so for position two you are going to be keeping your feet opposite directions but you
are going to move your feet about shoulder width apart, Stacy said
“Ok, Jen replied, I got that”
“Now you are going to take your arms from the first position pose of the pointy circle as I
like to call it, to straight out to the sides,” Stacy Said while giggling.
“Girls”, Madam Oblomov said open the door, “class is over for the day so you will have
to finish tomorrow”
“Ok, thank you for telling us,” said Stacy
“Do you want to hang out at my house tomorrow night?” asked Jen
“ Um I would say yes but tomorrow is my mom’s birthday and we always have a special
dinner at my grandma's house, Sorry, Stacy apologised, But you can come to Dairy Queen with
me and my Mom tonight if you would like.”
“ Sure, thanks,” Jen Said
As Jen and Stacy left the Practice room to go to the car Madam Oblomov stopped them
and asked them to step into her office.
“So as you might know I am hosting a beginners class a little bit earlier than this but that
class is going to be a little bit younger than you”
“ No Please”, Stacy Said, “ Please I can teach her by the end of this week I promise.
“Why is it that big of a deal for you, you aren’t even the one that I would be
moving?”Said Madam Oblomov
“She is my new best friend, even though I don’t really know her that well”, Stacy said
“ Thanks Stacy,” Jen said. “That means a lot to me”
“ I know that you don’t want to let your friend go to a different level, Said Madam
Oblomov, but I would rather her learn right than be with friends, Jen you are moving to the
younger group.”
“Ok, i mean i don’t really want to but ok, i guess”, Jen says
“ No Jen why are you ok with this?” Stacy asked as she is in tears
“ Stacy why are you crying?”, Jen asked
“ because my best friend just moved away and i thought that we could become friends
because we would hang out all the time.” Stacy explained
“ Stacy just because I am moving down to the other class doesn’t mean that we can’t
hang out all the time.” Jen replied
“And Girls don’t forget that if she can move down she can move backup just as easy,”
said Madam Oblomov.
“Ok let’s go get that ice cream I was talking about earlier,” Stacy said, “ You look like
you might need some right about now.”
On there way to Dairy Queen Stacy told her mom about all of the things that happened at
ballet, with the positions, Jen moving down a level, and that she is pretty sure that she found her
new best friend.
“ So it sounds like you guys had a good not so good ballet class,” Stacy’s mom said
trying to merge into a the lane coming off of the exit.
“I mean it was a little bit emotional but for the most part it was good, because if I can
show jen all of the positions by Friday,”Stacy said confidently, “and she learns that first part of
the recital by Monday of next week she can come back up to my class.”
Ok girls”, Stacy’s mom said, “ we’re here, do you both know what you want.”
“Yeah”, both Stacy and Jen said so Excitedly that all of the People around them gave us a
funny look.
When they got inside Stacy couldn’t make up her mind on what she wanted
“ hello how can i help you today,” the cashier asked
“ Can i get a banana - wait i want a hot choco-, no i want the banana-no-”
“ Jen do you know what you want sweetheart?” Stacy’s mom asked
“Yeah” Jen replied
“Hey Stacy, how about you let Jen go while you make up your mind,” Stacy’s mom said
so embarrassed that she had firetruck red cheeks.
“ I know what i want this time though,” Stacy said upset
“ than say it we don’t have all day”
“ I’m going to get a vanilla with oreos”
“ Ok”, the cashier replied
“ What do you want jen” stacy’s mom asked
“ um can I get a hot chocolate blizzard please” Jen said super excited with the choice
“Yep that will be out in just a second”, the cashier replied
“ After this will I have to go home?”, asked Jen while she was attempting to do the
positions again.
“ Nope, didn’t you say that if you

“Fine!” She yells back, angry. Stacey runs upstairs with three boxes sitting on her
bed. She crams everything on her desk and dresser into one box, things from her floor
and bedding in another, and everything from her closet in the last one. She stomped
downstairs with the boxes stacked on top of each other.
“Here,” she says,”I’m going to Jen’s.”

***

Five minutes later she arrived at Jen’s.

“Hey Stacey, what’s up?” Jen says.
“Well, we’re moving,” she says.
“What?” Jen says, sounding even madder than Stacey did,
”To where?”
“I don’t know, but I better get back so I can figure this whole thing out, then I’ll call
you.”
Once she got got home she went to the back asking her mom,
“So where are we moving to?”
“Not that far,” her mom replied, “about ten minutes from where we are right now.”
“Oh, that’s much better than i thought!” Stacey replied, relieved.
She went up to her room to call Jen.
“ We’re only ten minutes away from where we live now!”
“Thats amazing, Stacey!” Jen exclaims.
“Okay, I better start helping pack.” Stacey says
“Okay,” she says, “ see ya tomorrow.”
“Bye!” Stacey exclaimed.
Jen replies, “Bye!”

“It’s time!” hollered Stacy. As she packed her bag with sunglasses, shorts, sandals, and of
course, sunscreen. She was ecstatic about her Hawaiian trip with her family.
But what she didn’t know was that a similar twelve-year old was getting ready for the
exact same trip, Jen. Jen lived in Brooklyn, where her family had moved from China. She didn’t
have a lot of things to pack which included a swimsuit, sunscreen, a hand me down shirt from
her mother, and her brand new shorts from a store that was located a block away from their
apartment.
“Sweety, hurry up,” called her mother, “we don’t want to be late for the plane, and Mona
is already in the car.”
“Coming!” yelled Jen.
In San Francisco, Stacy was just heading into the family van with involved, her brother,
Ian, her grandmother, and her parents. The traffic was normally bad in San Francisco, so her
parents made everyone wake up extra early to miss rush hour. Once they got on the plane, Stacy
started fiddling with her ballet shoes. She’s always anxious during take offs. On that same flight
Jen and her family had just boarded.
“Thank God,” sighed Jen’s mother, “we made the flight.”
“I know,” exclaimed Mona, “we wouldn’t have made it if Jen had gone any slower!”
“Sorry,” Jen said in an insincere manner.
The flight took six hours; long hours. Jen mostly listened to Mozart’s piece the piano
version. While Stacy tried imagining herself on the beach while sand poured through her toes.
Both girls were so excited for the trip.
Upon landing, Stacy’s mom said, “c’mon honey, we need to get our luggage.”
“It’s fine mom,” groaned Ian and Stacy at the same time.
Jen and her family picked up their bags quickly. They wanted to have time to explore the
hotel and beach before dark. Jen did not waste any time when she got to the hotel, she grabbed
her iPod and headphones and started out onto the beach.
Meanwhile, Stacy unpacked everything into the dresser, but had to leave room in the
drawers for Ian because they were sharing a room. After that, she too grabbed her iPod,
headphones, and her ballet slippers.
Stacy shouted, “I’m off.”
On the beach, everything seemed to be moving in slow motion the two girls thought.
Stacy who had already put on her ballet shoes started dancing in the warmth of the
sunset. While Jen had put on one of her piano pieces that she had created by herself. It had been
inspired by one of Beethoven's pieces. Once Jen thought that everyone was out of earshot and
sight, she took out her headphones and started tapping her fingers to each different key. But what
she didn’t notice was that another twelve-year old girl had stopped dancing to hear the rich
music.
“Hey,” Stacy called, “that music is beautiful who composed it?”
Jen had not realized that Stacy had been standing there.
“Oh, hi. Sorry for the disturbance it’s nothing,” Jen murmured.
“Don’t be sorry,” Stacy said, “that was wonderful!”
Jen inquired, “really?”
“Ya, did you write that,” Stacy said excitedly.
“Uhh, ya,” whispered Jen.
Afterwards, Jen showed Stacy the song, and Stacy had started to dance to the classical
music, because ballet is normally danced to classical music.
Soon it was after dark, and Jen and Stacy had been walking on the beach talking about
their lives. Before they knew it, they were heading back to their hotel rooms knowing everything
about each other.
That next week, Stacy and Jen had become best friends doing everything together. Plus,
their families soon grew tight, while Mona and Ian were about the same age. The week had
flown by so quickly. One more day till they would have to fly back to their separate homes.
“Oh Stacy,” cried Jen, “I’m going to miss you so much. I’ll try to visit you, and we can
be pen pals, and…”
“Jen, it’s going to be ok,” Stacy reassured, “my family has promised that we will visit
you in Brooklyn.”
Jen mumbled, “ok.”
That day they tried to forget about their paradise ending, so they distracted themselves by
swimming with dolphins, surfing, and getting brain freezes from raspberry icees. That night, they
made a pact to never forget each other.
The following day, they reluctantly said their goodbyes and hugged for a minute.
“Goodbye,” whispered Stacy.
“Goodbye,” Jen said even quieter.

Stacy’s mom responded by saying, “It is going good just need to get used to it.

“ My day is great how is yours?” said Jen’s mom.
“Good the kids are still asleep and grandma is watching tv in the living room”
Said Stacy's mom
“I think we hang out sometime? If you have any free time this weekend?” said
Jen’s mom.
“Actually I was thinking the same thing. We have not seen each other in a while.
So what day works best for you?” said Stacy's mom
“ Saturday works best but if you can't make it work I can do Sunday. We are

Jens mom.
“Saturday will work and we are going to bring chex mix and watermelon,” said

“I can’t believe i’m doing this,” Jen said to her mother, “performing in front of the piano
teacher is one thing but performing live for a ballet recital is another.” She was sitting in the car
with her mom outside of the theatre.
“I know your nerves but just know that your sister and I will be in the audience so just
pretend that we are the only ones there and you should be okay.”
“Yeah but what if I get distracted by the dancers on the stage!?”
“You won’t.”
“But what if-,”
“You won’t, Jen you are just putting more stress on yourself, just stay calm and play the
piano everything will be okay. Besides they are giving you an hour of practice before the show
with the dancers that way you can not get distracted by whatever outfits they may wear.”
“Okay, mom.” With those finale words she got out of the car and walked into the theater.
“Hello there,” Jen jumped and looked to see where the voice came from, “my name is
Stacy what’s yours.” She turned around only to see a girl with large brown eyes staring at her.
“My name is Jen” She said quietly.
“I’m sorry, could you say that again please I’m afraid I didn’t hear you.” Stacy said smiling at the
newcomer.
“My name is Jen,” she said louder this time, pronouncing the space in between carefully on her
name to make sure this Stacy didn’t say it like altogether like Lina.
“ That’s a nice name,” Stacy replied, “so why are you here?”
“I’m supposed to play the piano for the dance recital.”
“Really! You look so young you must be so talented to have been asked to play for this!”
“Thank you for the compliment, what are you here for?” Jen asked, confused that this girl would
straight out compliment her like that.
“Oh, I’m supposed to dance in this so I guess we were going to meet anyway.”
“So You are going to be up on that stage dancing in front of 200 people and your not nervous?”
“No I’m plenty nervous, like what if I trip and ruin the show, What if I can’t get my costume on in
time and we have to wait and the audience gets bored and they leave and the whole thing is
ruined because of me, What if I can’t do a move correct all because I had to take an absence
from bally to pay for my Grandma’s ticket!”

Dialog story

It was my first day in sixth grade at an American school, and I was tense. I thought that I
would be the only asian girl there, and that worried me because I am shy and do not like to stand
out. Walking into school made my worries worse, but then I walked into class I saw this girl
sitting down quietly in the front of the room.

“Hello, my name is Stacy,” I said to the seemingly shy girl hoping that I could make
friends with her.
“Hello,” she responded slow and carefully, “my name is Jen.”
“Are you new here like me, or have you been here for awhile like everyone else?” I ask
trying to carry on the conversation.
“I’m new in this town, I just recently moved here from a small town in Asia, how about
you?” Jen answered.
“I also recently moved here this summer for ballet, but I had to stop taking my classes
since my grandma came back last week.” I told Jen
She looked curious and said, “We look a lot alike, we both have black hair and hazel eyes
with a small nose. Where in Asia did you come from?”
“I came from Penang, I was put up for adoption and given to a nice mother and father
there,” I answered.

Just then the teacher walked in to start the first class of the day.

“Good morning boys and girls, I hope your day has gotten off to a good start,” the tall skinny
man with a beard exclaimed, “My name is Mr. Bankks, I am from Washington DC and I recently
moved here to Florida for the nice weather and job offer I got.”

Mr Bankks went on to talk about some of the school rules, and of course the rules he had in his
classroom no shouting, no throwing and no swearing. When he finally finished talking to us
about the classroom rules, the bell rang and we were all off to second period. Jen and I both had
science next, so we walked together.

Jen finally broke the silence walk by asking,”Would you like to come over to my house
after school, so we can get to know eachother better?”
I responded,”Of course, my mom would be fine with that.”

It was the end of the day now; Jen and I walked outside to greet her mother in her little red
toyota.

“Good afternoon girls, oh yes let me introduce myself, I’m Jessica Hoyts, I am Jen’s mother.”
“Hello Mrs. Hoyts, I am Stacy Montgomery.” I responded. Mrs. Hoyts looked panicky
after she got a good look at me when I introduced myself, which was very suspicious, because
she also looked a lot like me, just like Jen.
“We are here, make yourself at home Stacy,” Jen’s mom said with a big nervous smile on
her face. Jen and I went up to her room and just talked about everything ranging from favorite
colors to adoption. It was like we just automatically had some kind of connection.
“My mom told me that thirteen years ago she sadly gave up her baby girl for adoption,
but she made sure the adoptive parents knew that they could tell her about her birth mother.” Jen
said when we got on the topic of adoption.

After that comment my suspicion was through the roof that Jen might somehow be my little
sister, so when I got home I asked my mom if she knew anything about my birth mom, and my
gut feeling was correct.
“Your birth mom’s name was Jessica Hoyt, she was 18 when you were born, and she was
scared that if she kept you, you would not have the good life you deserve. So she gave you to us,
and that was the happiest day of our lives.” Mom told me.

My mouth dropped open

“I met my birth mother today, she’s the mom of the girl I made friends with.” I said
slowly, still shocked about what my mom told me.

Three months later, my mom allows me to go over to Jen’s house still, after making sure that
Jessica knows that she told me about her being my birth mom. Jessica and I haven’t talked about
the whole adoption thing, because we agreed to not talk about it. We also agreed not tell Jen for
now, since we do not know how she will react to it because we’re good friends who do
everything together.
23rd Dialogue
Jen and Stacy
“So Jen, what do you want for Christmas this year?” asked Stacy.
“Well I don’t really know,” responded Jen, “I saw this 6th grader last week and she was
carrying a really cool and pretty white umbrella. I wouldn’t be disappointed to be able to carry
something like that to school every day.”
Stacy said, “I think a pink umbrella would be cooler than a white one. Pink jumps out
more and looks better. That's just my opinion though.”
Jen spoke, “No! I hate the color pink. White is just so plain and perfect. It goes good with
everything and if I asked for a pink one then I would have to wear a matching shirt to school
everyday with it or else the cool kids will make fun of me.”
“An umbrella is used in the rain silly goose,” Stacy said while giggling, “it's not going to
be raining every day.”
“It will still look cool if I held it over my wrist and it just dangled there, but you just think what
you want to think,” Jen said, “besides what do you want for Christmas this year? A new phone?
A new skirt maybe?”
Stacy responded, “No I want a new pair of pink ballet shoes with matching ribbons, those
would sure make my Christmas!”
“But don’t you already have ballet shoes with ribbons? I always see you put them in your
locker at school,” Jen said.
“I used to, but when my Grandma came here to live with us from China she threw them
away,” said Stacy.
“Why would she throw away something like that?! Aren't those like super super
expensive?” said Jen
Stacy said, “Yes they are super expensive! I saved up all my birthday money for three
whole years for those! My mom told me when my Grandma was young in China she was forced
into really small shoes that were a fraction of the size of her feet. And they used ribbons to hold
their feet in the shoes.”
“Omg,” said Jen, “that sounds so painful, why would they ever do that to people?”
Stacy responded, “Apparently years ago in China, small feet were considered ‘beautiful
and pretty’ but it was one of the most painful things my grandma went through she said.”
“So that explains why she threw them away!” said Jen, “She didn’t want you to live
through the same thing she did and go through the same pain you went through. Aww thats so
nice of her!”
“Yeah I guess it is nice of her but I just wish she would respect that I love doing Ballet!”
said Stacy.
“That is very true, she should respect you and what you like to do but don’t forget, she is
your grandmother and you have to respect her for protecting you. It means she cares about you,”
said Jen.
“Yeah! I gue`1=[pss I do have an amazing Grandma!” Exclaimed Stacy.

L.A.

Once upon a time there was a girl named Jen and Stacey. They lived in the same
neighborhood and loved to perform. Stacey would dance while Jen played the piano. But they
didn't like a lot of the same things. For example Jen loves to read and she doesn't like animals.
Stacey doesn't like to read and she loves animals. In there first performance of the year, Stacey
fell and hurt her ankle.
“Ouch!” screamed Stacey, “someone help me.”
“What’s wrong Stacey? Are you okay?” Jen asked.
“I think I sprained my ankle, or even worse, broke it!” Stacey yelled in pain.
“Oh no! Your mom is coming to help you,” said Jen.
“Mom! Mom. I’m in so much pain. Please call a doctor!” said Stacey, trying not to cry.
“It’s okay,” calmly said her mother, “we will go to the doctor right away!”
Jen responded, “Can I come too? I have to make sure my best friend is okay!”
“No No Jen.” Said Stacey’s mother, “I think you should stay here and watch the rest of
the performers!”
“Okay,” Jen said sadly.
Later that day Stacey texted Jen and said, “My ankle is sprained. I will be out of dance
for 1-2 weeks.”
“Oh no! I hope you get better soon and we can start dancing again,” Jen said bitterly.
As the week passed by, Jen kept practicing piano. She was waiting until Stacey was able
to dance again!
“How is your ankle feeling,” asked Jen.
“Good!” Stacey said, “I think I'm ready to dance again!”
“That’s great! Should we go practice in the gym and see how your ankle holds up,”
Asked Jen.
“Yes. I will meet you there in 10 minutes,” Stacey said.
“Sounds good!” said Jen
When they got to the gym, Jen played the piano. Stacey took her first leap and started
dancing like nothing ever happened! As the week went on they kept practicing and practicing for
finals.
“It’s time!” said Jen. “Are you ready?”
“So ready!” responded Stacey.
“Next up we have Stacey and Jen,” Proudly yelled the announcer.
“Let's do this!” said Stacey.
The girls walked out confident and proud! Stacey was so happy to be back dancing! Jen
played the first note, then Stacey began to do her dance. When the performance was finished,
Everyone claimed and screamed.
“We did it,” Jen said happily.
“You did amazing playing the piano,” said Stacey.
“Thank you so much. You dancing amazing as well,” said Jen.
After all the other performers went, it was time for the winners.
“In 3rd place we have Beca and Josie! Congratulations girls. You did awesome!” yelled
the announcer.
“In 2nd place we have Amanda and Caroline. Congratulations!” said the announcer.
“We got this,” said Jen confidently!
“And in 1st place…..Drum roll please……. Jen and Stacey! You girls did
amazing. Congratulations.
Everyone screamed and clapped with joy.
“We did it!” Stacey screamed holding up the trophy. “I couldn't of done it without
