Examination for the Certificate

of Proficiency in English

This examination is intended for candidates whose native language is not English and who have
attained an advanced level of English.

The Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano administers this test in June and November, conducted
on behalf of the internationally prestigious Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments. Candidates
will face an exam battery with the following components:

1. Speaking
(30 - 35 minutes) Examinees participate in a decision-making task in pairs.

2. Writing
(30 minutes, 1 task) Examinees write an essay based upon one of two topic choices.

3. Listening - Part I: A short recorded conversation is accompanied by three printed

(35 - 40 minutes, 50 items) statements. Examinees choose the statement that means about the
same thing as what was heard, or that is true based upon the
conversation.

- Part II: A recorded question is accompanied by three printed

responses. Examinees choose the appropriate response to the question.

- Part III: Three recorded talks, such as those that might be heard on the
radio, are each followed by recorded comprehension questions.
Examinees choose the correct answer from the printed answer choices.

4. Grammar, Cloze, - Grammar (40 items): An incomplete sentence is followed by a choice

Vocabulary, Reading of words or phrases to complete it. Only one choice is grammatically
(75 minutes) correct.

- Cloze (1 passage, 20 questions): After reading a passage from which

words have been removed, examinees must choose one of four words
that best fills a missing word slot in terms of grammar and meaning.

- Vocabulary (40 items): An incomplete sentence is followed by a

choice of words to complete it. Only one word has the correct meaning
in the context.

- Reading (4 passages, 20 questions): Four reading passages are

followed by comprehension questions.

Candidates who satisfactorily complete the test will receive a certificate issued by the University of Michigan.
