V-BELT DRIVE
1. The following data is given for a V-belt drive connecting a 20 kW motor
to a compressor
Motor-pulley Compressor
pulley
Pitch diameter (mm) 300 900
Speed (rpm) 1440 480
Coefficient of friction 0.2 0.2
The center distance between pulleys is 1 m and the dimensions of the
cross-section of the belt is trapezoidal with parallel side being 12 mm
and 22 mm respectively and depth is 14 mm. The density of the
composite belt is 0.97 g/cc and the allowable tension per belt is 850

DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR WIRE ROPE
B. The service load (Ps): Total load (W) + Total weight of rope (WR) +
Inertia load (WI)
But
Inertia load WI = M x a
𝑊+𝑊𝑅
= 𝑔
x a
Then calculate the value of service load Ps
Then select the standard diameter from table 21-40 page no. 21.56

CHAIN DRIVES
1. Select a roller chain drive to transmit power of 10 kw from a shaft rotating
at 750 rpm to another shaft to run at 450 rpm. The distance between the
shaft centers could be taken as 35 pitches.
2. The roller chain is to transmit 66.24 kW from 17 tooth sprocket to 34 tooth
sprocket at a pinion speed of 300 rpm. The loads are moderate shock. The
equipment is to run 18 hrs/day. Specify the length and size of the chain
required for Centre distance about 25 pitches.
3. Design a chain drive to actuate a compressor from 15 kW electric motor
running at 1000 r.p.m., the compressor speed being 350 r.p.m. The minimum
Centre distance is 500 mm. The compressor operates 16 hours per day.
The chain tension may be adjusted by shifting the motor on slides.
4. Select a chain drive to actuate a compressor from 15 kW electric motor at
720 rpm that of compressor is 160 rpm.
5. It is required to design a chain drive to connect a 12 kW, 1400 rpm electric
motor to a centrifugal pump running at 700 rpm. The service conditions
involve moderate shocks.
(i) Select a proper roller chain and give a list of its dimensions.
(ii) Determine the pitch circle diameters of driving and driven sprockets.
(iii) Determine the number of chain links.
(iv) Specify the correct centre distance between the axes of sprockets.
