“This is the classic Icelandic day trip, and it’s quite
an easy one to do,” says Asa. “Parts of it are getting
quite touristy, but it’s popular because the sights are
so spectacular – and at the big draws like the Gullfoss

Drive up the spectacular, winding 435 road that
Ben Stiller longboards down in Hollywood movie The

Iceland’s largest lake. At the end of the road, head
north and east, skirting the lake and passing through

North American tectonic plates. From there, you’ll

The main road from Reykjavik to Vik along Iceland’s

from a single road. “I always recommend this trip to
visitors,” says Asa, “because there are just so many
places to choose between – from black sand beaches to
glaciers. There are more waterfalls in the south than
anywhere else in Iceland, and it all looks so different
depending on the time of year.”
Drive more than an hour towards Vik, joining

architects as the Blue Lagoon, where interactive exhibits
tell the story of the earthquakes and volcanoes that
formed Iceland. You’ll pass the Eyjafjallajökull volcano,

After thousands of years in the making, the Macedonian

capital of Skopje is finally stepping into the spotlight

WORDS ALEX CREVAR

P etre Šilegov, the mayor of Skopje, is
a man who trusts his own instincts.
One of his favourite phrases is
“I make difficult decisions easily,”
and in many ways, this philosophy
sums up the capital of Macedonia. The
city, surrounded by mountains and
bisected by the Vardar River, blends
multiple different traditions: a product of having had
a front-row seat to watch the rise and fall of the Greek,
Macedonian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires
on the Balkan Peninsula. It’s a city that can truly lay
claim to the word ‘ancient’, having witnessed major
historic eras dating all the way back to the Bronze Age.
But it’s not only history on offer here.

“We have an advantage, because we have the ability
to surprise,” says Šilegov about his home city. “In
Skopje, we can offer visitors everything along history’s
timeline, as well as world-class food and wine, different
religions, and cultures – all within one walkable town,
which includes an ancient fortress, the Ottoman-era
bazaar, and modern buildings.” The city is currently
going through a restructuring of its roads and tunnels
to revitalise parks and forests, and to make the city
centre more bike-friendly. The result, Šilegov hopes,
will be winning the title of European Green Capital 2021.
“Here, our differences are our strengths. You’ll find that
living well is a habit here. People are the soul of our city.”
We’ve come to Skopje to spend a weekend in search of
that soul, looking to discover the sites that best
represent this ancient, and modern, city. Our first stop
after the mayor’s office is the Museum of Contemporary
Art (msu.mk), which overlooks the city on a hill. The

“The Museum of Contemporary Art was just one of

the elements of Skopje’s rebirth,” says Mira Gakjina,
the museum’s acting director. “The symbol of the
city is a phoenix, indicating its ability to rise from the
ashes. In its extremely long existence, Skopje has faced
devastating destruction, after which it’s always renewed.”
From the museum’s wide windows on the hilltop,
you can look across the city and see her point. Skopje
has been crafted from the remains of many different
eras and styles; it’s a unique modern collage made up
of citizens of Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish, Serbian,
Bosnian, and Roma descent. The Kale Fortress lies
directly below the museum. Its castle walls and towers,
with 6th century foundations, are built on the remnants
of a settlement dating back to 4,000BC. In the city

“This city is so full of life. There is a real feeling that

Our final morning is crisp with bright blue skies.
We meet Aleksandar Donev again, this time taking
a hike up the city’s local mountain, Vodno. We walk
along trails and occasionally under cable cars that
whisk families up to the 1,066m peak. At the top, we
stand under the towering steel Millennium Cross – at

can see all of Skopje. The Ottoman quarter, the main
square with its giant monuments, Debar Maalo –
even the former train station, damaged during the
earthquake, which now serves as the City Museum.
The clock on its façade is frozen on 5:17am – the
moment the disaster struck on 26 July 1963.
“People are attracted to the edge of things,”
Donev says, as we survey the city we’ve spent the
last few days exploring. “That’s why travellers
climb mountains and set sail on voyages of discovery.
And Skopje has always been at the forefront of
empires and traditions. But, it is also a connector,
bringing together all those ‘edges’ and interpreting
them in a completely new way.”
“I could live anywhere in the world with my job,

tradition, and its charm make it an inspiring place to

We make our way down the street for a classic Skopje

where regulars gather around a fireplace to order veal
and lamb and local specialties like sarma (minced meat
wrapped in cabbage). Nearly every table is crowded
with glasses of rakija (local schnapps), plates of roasted

Afterwards, we head to Bruklinski Jazz Bistro (facebook.

for Radio Free Europe,
35-year-old Amos Chapple
is used to going to extreme
lengths to take pictures,
including visiting the coldest
city on Earth and exploring
Europe’s most remote regions. So last July, when he
heard that Georgia was about to introduce new laws
on the use of drones for photography, he bundled
his brand new Quadcopter onto a plane and set
off for a two-week photographic expedition around
the picturesque country.
“Georgia is an incredible place, and I wanted to
get over there while I could still take these types of
photos. It’s a little-known country, which is exciting as
a photographer because you can get to places that are
relatively untouched by the outside world,” he says.
Prague-based Chapple is one of the pioneers of
aerial drone photography, drawn to the unique
overhead shots of buildings, remote villages, (PREVIOUS PAGE) THE CHIATURA CABLE CAR

THE CITY OF KUTAISI
“Kutaisi is Georgia’s third
most populated city, but it’s
also a historic place, and as
Georgia’s legislative capital, an
important one. I really wanted
to include urban landscapes
because so much of Georgia’s
eye candy is in the mountains
and villages. In Kutaisi, you
really get to see what life is
like in a typical Georgian town,
and that’s really charming.
You also get world-class food

THE KATSKHI PILLAR

“The monk who lives on the top of this pillar
one day had a revelation and wanted to be
closer to God. He climbed up the pillar 24
years ago and lived inside the only structure
he had – a fridge. Bit by bit, people warmed
to the idea of a house on top of a rock, so
they started sending him building materials
and eventually he built a church and a
house. I was one of the only journalists to
be allowed up there, so this photo is very
personal for me. It’s only half an hour from
Kutaisi, but the mountain roads in Georgia
make it feel much more remote.”

the surrounding landscape.
It was built during Mikheil

like a number of buildings

THE CITY OF BATUMI

“Georgia is famous for its mountains, rolling
landscapes and rural life. In contrast to all
that, Batumi is visually quite different, which
is why I took this photograph. For me, Batumi
is a cross between Thailand and Las Vegas
– all crowds and hot concrete. The northern
part of Georgia’s coastline is a separate
region, so Batumi is all Georgia has left of the
coast, which is why it gets so busy.”

THE UPLISTSIKHE CAVE CITY

“This is an ancient cave city and
one of Georgia’s oldest remaining
towns, a day trip from Kutaisi. When
I arrived, there was a very strong
summer wind. The light was perfect,
and there was this dramatic cloud,
but the sensors on my camera were
beeping, telling me the conditions
weren’t good. I sent the camera up
anyway, and got my picture. This
photo is all thanks to the evening
light – if I’d got there at any other
time of the day it would have been
completely in the shade.”
