Unit 5 Genetic Inheritance Roadmap

HS - LS3-3 Apply concepts of statistics and probability to explain the variation and distribution of expressed traits in a population.

The Content/Learning Targets:

✓ Mendelian Genetics:
o I can use a punnett square to predict the genotypes and phenotypes of offspring.
o I can explain how each parent contributes to the genotype/phenotype of the offspring.
✓ Complex Traits (Incomplete/Codominance/Sex-Linked):
o I can use punnett squares to predict the genotypes and phenotypes of offspring.
o I can explain how each parent contributes to the genotype/phenotype of the offspring.
✓ Dihybrid Crosses:
o I can use a punnett square to predict the genotypes and phenotypes of offspring.
o I can explain how each parent contributes to the genotype/phenotype of the offspring.
✓ Pedigrees:
o I can interpret a pedigree and identify how a particular trait is inherited.
o I can assign genotypes and phenotypes to individuals in the pedigree.

The Final Product

What is the probability your offspring will have a particular trait? After learning about genetics concepts and researching your extended
family history, create a pedigree in which you predict the genotypes/phenotypes of your offspring. Then, provide an explanation to support
your prediction using evidence from you pedigree.

Your student will be analyzing data from their families. This is meant simply to allow students to calculate the probability that their children
MIGHT inherit a particular trait. Likely your student will be using photos for their data. If you are uncomfortable with your student analyzing
your family please let me know and they can easily be provided with an alternative set of data to analyze.
