1 The viscosity of a fluid is to be measured by a viscometer constructed of two 40-cm-long

concentric cylinders. The outer diameter of the inner cylinder is 12 cm, and the gap between the
two cylinders is 0.15 cm. The inner cylinder is rotated at 300 rpm, and the torque is measured to
be 1.8 N - m. Determine the viscosity of the fluid.
2 Consider a double-fluid manometer attached to an air pipe shown in Fig. 1. If the specific gravity
of one fluid is 13.55, determine the specific gravity of the other fluid for the indicated absolute
pressure of air. Take the atmospheric pressure to be 100 kPa.
3 Consider a large cubic ice block floating in seawater. The specific gravities of ice and seawater
are 0.92 and 1.025, respectively. If a 10-cm-high portion of the ice block extends above the
surface of the water, determine the height of the ice block below the surface.
4 Balloons are often filled with helium gas (Figure 2) because it weighs only about one-seventh of
what air weighs under identical conditions. The buoyancy force, which can be expressed as
Fb = ρair g Vballoon, will push the balloon upward. If the balloon has a diameter of 10 m and carries
two people, 70 kg each, determine the acceleration of the balloon when it is first released.
Assume the density of air is 1.16 kg/m3 and neglect the weight of the ropes and the cage.
