Direction: Analyze the elements of the short story that is assigned in your group. Identify also the techniques
and literary devices used by the author in the story.

Dynamic:
Dodong – a young boy who wants to marry but years after his marriage with Teang
regretted his decision

Teang – a young girl who married Dodong and just like him, she regretted her
TYPES, AND decision as well
CHARACTERIZATION Static:
Blas – the eldest child of Dodong who wants to marry in an early age as well

The story takes place in the remote areas in the West, particularly in Dodong’s
SETTING AND house. The atmosphere in the story is confusing and risky for the characters are
ATMOSPHERE always taking risks in making their decisions.

The story is told in Third Person Point of View; Omniscient, for the narrator knows
POINT OF VIEW what the characters are thinking of and knows what the characters are planning to
do next.

IMPORTANT EVENTS  Dodong tells his father that he wants to marry despite his young age.
 Dodong and Teang gets married and they have children.
THAT COMPROMISE
 Years after their marriage, both Dodong and Teang felt regret.
THE PLOT AND PLOT  Their eldest child, Blas, told Dodong that he wants to marry despite his
STRUCTURE young age as well.

Dodong had a lot going on inside his mind, whether he must agree or disagree to
CONFLICT his son’s request, thus, the conflict is mainly “man versus himself.” The conflict is
internal as well.
 Dodong agreed to his son, Blas, marrying despite the problems that he
experienced years after marrying at an early age as well. It is expected that
Dodong would disagree since he did the same years ago and is now
regretting. (Situational irony)
IRONIES AND TYPES
 Marriage is a covenant, an unbreakable bond, and something that is taken
as a serious matter, yet the story shows otherwise since the characters
don’t think of the consequences first before making a decision. (Dramatic
Irony)

THEME AND Decision-making is like having a civil war within yourself. Therefore, let us learn to
DRAMATIC PREMISE make our decisions wisely and think before we decide.

 The story is mainly sad because the characters (Dodong and Teang)
started to regret the decisions that they made while they were still young.
(Tone)
 Us, readers, felt very sympathetic since we know the consequences of
TECHNIQUES AND hasty decisions and the characters in the story did make hasty decisions.
LITERARY DEVICES : (Mood)
Mood , Tone,  Symbols are seen on the setting and the characters. Living in the farm and
Symbolism, Hints, wearing kundiman and other clothes stated in the story and giving birth in
and Foreshadowing the house gives the readers an idea that the characters are financially
challenged. (Symbolism)
 “Must you marry?”
“Son… n-none…”
“….why life did not fulfill any of Youth’s dreams.” (Hints)
