The Atmosphere is made up of five layers, Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, and the
Exosphere. The air pressure increases in each zone as it is closer to the Earth.
Troposphere- contains almost all of Earth’s life and weather conditions (water cycle)
Temperatures from the ground to the top of the Troposphere drop ~45 to ~75 °C
Gasses- ~78% nitrogen, ~21% oxygen, ~1% argon, ~0.5% carbon dioxide
Stratosphere- life- Bacteria, few birds, and humans in airplanes
Temperature increases to ~-3 °C at the top of the Stratosphere
Gasses- mostly 03 (Ozone)
Mesosphere- least studied section of the atmosphere.
electrical charges (red sprites and blue jets) have been seen here
Temperature ~-143 °C
Gases- nitric oxide, nonionized sodium, iron and potassium
Thermosphere- The temperature here depends greatly on the Sun, but generally is between 2000 °C and 0°C
Gases- nitrogen, oxygen, helium
Exosphere- The lack of gravity makes measuring temperature difficult in this zone, and there is little difference
between this zone and outer space.
Temperature- between ~300°C and 1700°C
Gases- Hydrogen and some helium, carbon dioxide, and oxygen

Create a 2D model of the Atmosphere on a poster paper (no smaller than 11x17 and no bigger
than 17x22) using some or all of information above.
- Include a key or legend that shows the meanings of the symbols in your model
- Include at least two symbols to represent information like density, temperature, gases, etc.
- Be creative and use something other than crayon or markers to make your model.
Suggestions- beans, beads, silly string, etc (Be sure that whatever you choose
sticks well to the poster board and does not attract ants. It will need to hang in
the classroom for a couple months)
