OBJECTIVES OF CLINICAL EDUCATION - TREATMENT UNIT

Seniors Spring Semester Rotation


Affective Objectives
Through clinical assignments students will receive instruction in order to achieve the following objectives:

PATIENT CARE PRACTICES


1. Introduces self and other appropriate personnel to patient
2. Greets and assist correct patient in and out of treatment position
3. Respects patient’s right to privacy and confidentiality
4. Displays warmth and empathy toward patient
5. Recognizes radiation side-effects and determines when treatment
should be withheld until a physician may be consulted

LEVEL OF PROFESSIONALISM
1. Reports to assigned area on time and is present for all treatments
2. Displays a professional behavior towards patients and staff.
3. Cooperates with staff when given suggestions and new ideas
4. Works as a member of the team
5. Carries out instructions promptly, asking questions for clarification
6. Accepts constructive criticism, guidance and direction with a positive attitude
7. Communicates effectively with patients and medical staff

MOTIVATION
1. Shows enthusiasm and initiative in performing assigned tasks.
2. Actively and voluntarily seeks further information from staff.
3. Offers assistance to staff and patients whenever needed

CONDUCT AND APPEARANCE


1. Discusses patient information out of hearing of inappropriate people
2. Questions setup activities out of sight and hearing of patients
3. Performs general activities in a calm and assured manner
4. Maintains professional appearance and hygiene

RADIATION SAFETY PRACTICES


1. Demonstrates adherence to radiation safety rules
2. Identifies location of emergency off switches
3. Monitors patient and control console during treatment delivery
Clinical Objectives
PATIENT TREATMENT SKILLS
1. Reviews Rx Chart and refers to set-up instruction, & photos
2. Prepares treatment room with the necessary equipment prior to patient use
3. Describes the procedure to be done if new to pt.
4. Positions patient to reproduce set up indicated in treatment chart
5. Utilizes the lasers, distance indicator, TTD, to set correct SSD/SAD on patient
6. Recognizes and resolves discrepancies in set ups
7 Uses simulation/port films for setups on 1st day of Tx, boost fields
and when changes are made to field
8. Utilizes immobilization devices properly
9 Uses treatment plans for set ups
10. Inserts devices correctly
11 Assures patient set up is accurate with treatment chart and/or record & verify

MANIPULATION AND CARE OF EQUIPMENT


1. Demonstrates safe use of equipment & accessories (wedges, blocks, bolus, electron cones,
immobilization devices etc.)
2. Ensures the treatment couch and gantry are clear of obstructions before movement begins
3. Reads and sets gantry and collimator angles correctly from pendent
4. Identifies interlocks and is able to correct minor unit problems

ATTENTION TO CLINICAL DATA


1. Reviews treatment prescription daily and recognizes when
clarification or changes need to be made
2. Sets control console as required for treatments
3. Maintains adequate daily treatment records
4 Takes and records port films at appropriate intervals
