B.PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
006
O-WACS system is specially designed to measure the water content in oil. It may be applied
to hydraulic equipments or engine lubrication systems, and it plays a very important role in
guaranteeing long-term efficiency of diesel engine lubrication system and maintaining main
bearings.

Measurement of Water Content in oil

The water content in oil can be described by the relative value aw: actual water
content as fraction of the water in the saturated oil. aw = 0 corresponds to water-
free oil, while aw = 1 describes fully saturated oil. aw measurement with O-WACS
is based on the outstanding long term stability and resistance to pollution of a
capacitive sensor technology.

A capacitive semiconductor sensor of high precision which measures water content in oil
is applied to a sensor measuring water content. Accordingly, a w measurement by O-WACS
system is based on long-term stability and superior quality of capacitive sensor elements.
The water content measurement value in oil shall be measured with water activity (aw, Actual
water content in saturated oil) of relative humidity concept. aw = 0 indicates oil without
water, aw = 1 indicates completely saturated oil. Through such a measurement method, any
troubles can be prevented in earlier stage by detecting high water content when monitoring
the water content in oil of ships’ engines or important machines on a real-time basis.

O-WACS system executes temperature T of the measured oil at the same time, and the
measured value of aw & T can be freely transmitted in output signal of 4~20mA through
option board, and the system can also be extended to outside systems or composed of
monitoring and control devices. In addition the contact output for alarm and control is also
provided. (Three built-in contact output : normal, alarm, fault)

Users can monitor water content in oil at local by display equipment or at distance by online.
As the VFD module for extreme industrial circumstance is applied to display, both stability
and visuality are provided. As network is easily composed through RS485 communication,
and monitoring and data record can be done in long distance.

O-WACS is able to log data automatically by using Data Logging and Analysis software after
storing temperature, humidity, due point on nonvolatile memory installed inside O-WACS
Control Unit at designated intervals of users.
B.PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
007
1) A function to Measure Water Activity
Based on high precision and stable operation, actual water in oil is measured by aw which
is at the basis of saturated point where actual free water is produced. aw = 1 is activated
water content of oil which is saturated with water content.

2) A function to Measure Temperature

For Analysis of oil condition, precise measurement about temperature as well as water
activity is required. As O-WACS provides the oil temperature in a unit of decimal point, it
is also suitable for precise industrial application

3) Alarm Outputs
Such a relay output provides the structure which can easily transmit water content in oil
to host system.

4) RS 485-based built-in MODBUS PROTOCOL

Basically, it is possible to connect outside equipment because RS485 communication
was basically built in O-WACS, and it connect other system well because it is based on
Modbus RTU/ASCII Protocol which is internationally used.

5) Logger function loaded (Max. 30 years: Approx. 260,000times storage)

As logger function is loaded, water activity data and temperature data can be stored at
Data-Flash Memory which is loaded inside on the period set by users. And the analysis in
graph type is possible by downloading the data stored when connected to PC software.

6) Analog Outputs (Option)

If an option board for analog output is installed, aw and temperature T can be output with
electrical signal of 4~20mA. It makes it possible to monitor aw and T with precise figure at
distant place.

X.APPENDIX
033
X-1. What is Water Activity?

There are two ways to express unit of measure for quantifying water content in oil. As
traditional and absolute unit, one way has been ppm(parts per million) unit. By definition
ppm is an absolute moisture parameter that describes the volume or mass ratio of water
to oil. However ppm unit has a big weak point that it can’t explain any variation in oil’s
saturation points in the dynamic system.

The other way to express unit of measure for quantifying water content in oil is Water
Activity(aw). aw can be described as the amount of water in a substance relative to the total
amount of water

In definition,
aw = p/p0

Where p = relevant fluid partial pressure, p 0 = saturation steam pressure of net water
content at the same temperature

As the numerical formula shown above, aw will be changed by the variation of saturation
point which is dependent on temperature. In the view of water content in oil, aw will indicate
more actual water content in oil than absolute moisture parameter(ppm).

As previously stated, measuring aw can offer more successful solutions of the

condition of oil :
I n consideration of the saturation point of oil, aw will always provide a true
indication of risk of free water formation.
In spite of the saturation point of variation for any reasons(e.g., temperature,
age, change in physical properties), aw accurately reflects the new margin to
saturation.
B ecause aw applies to all fluids and solids, it can be used universally for all
substances regardless of chemical composition or physical characteristics.
X.APPENDIX
034
X-2. Calibration
Water measurement equipment can be calibrated in two methods.
① 1-point humidity/temperature calibration method: fast and simple calibration
method executed at humidity/temperature (measured area) of a the regulated
place.
② 2 -point humidity/temperature calibration method: simple, but precise
calibration method executed at low and high point where precise result can
be obtained at entire humidity/temperature measured range

It is recommended to maintain for minimum 1hour in the same place of

transmitter or standard chamber or standard reagent to reach temperature
balance.
I t is important to maintain stable temperature of chamber or standard
reagent during executing stability and calibration procedure.
R eplace the contaminated filter cap before calibration, and follow the
procedure of sensor chip cleaning.

1) 1 point calibration method

When the measured range is limited to certain range, 1-point calibration is used. When
applying to diesel engine of a ship, it is recommended to use 2-point calibration method.
1-point calibration method, as a method calibrating water activity fast and simply, can set
put the error in standard measurement equipment in offset type. Please refer to the E-2
Parameter setup method for more details.

2) 2 point calibration method

It is used when simple and precise measurement result is required, and it can increase
measurement preciseness of water activity in the whole range. It is recommended to use
this calibration method for diesel engine of a ship. Offset calibration is executed at the
calibration point of low humidity(less than 0.30Wa), and gain calibration is executed at the
calibration point of high humidity (over 0.70Wa).

To do this calibration method, you must buy a calibration kit. Please refer to
the G. REPLACEMENT PARTS / ACCESSORIES for ordering number
